Rise in new cases amid concern over hotspots

Daily confirmed cases began edging up again in July - after falling significantly from their April peak - as lockdown restrictions imposed in March were eased.

On Saturday, the government said there had been 1,288 newly-confirmed cases.

In July, the rise in cases was partly due to the increase in testing - if you are testing more, you are likely to find more cases. But the number of tests being processed each day has plateaued since the beginning of August, according to government data.

The most recent data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which surveys a sample of households in England for current infections, suggests there was a small increase in the percentage of people testing positive for Covid-19 in July, but this appears to have now levelled off.

Coronavirus will be present "forever in some form or another", a member of the government's Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) has said.

The risk of children catching coronavirus by returning to school is "incredibly small" compared to the "clear" chances of them being damaged by not going, England's chief medical officer has said.

Sixty police officers are undergoing coronavirus testing after an outbreak at two stations in Northern Ireland.

Four people have been arrested after police officers broke up an illegal party in Greater Manchester.

Birmingham Police have issued reminders of the need for social distancing after being called to more than 70 street and house parties and other unlicensed gatherings overnight.

England's chief medical officer Professor Chris Witty says he is "confident" in the ability of science but warns that a vaccine might not arrive before the end of 2021.

Coronavirus: Cardiff socialising 'behind Covid-19 case rise'

More people out socialising in Cardiff is believed to be behind a rise in coronavirus cases in the capital.

There have been 47 positive tests in the last week - which is 37% of all cases in Wales.

Public health officials said many of the new cases were among people between the ages of 20 and 30.

But the infection rate is still well below some areas in northern England and the Midlands, which have seen local measures introduced.

Fiona Kinghorn, director of public health at Cardiff and Vale health board, said they did not have a particular source in mind for the new cases, but they were believed to be more to do with people moving around between workplaces and social establishments.

"We've experienced a small number of clusters - that's led to a rise in the number of cases in Cardiff," she said.

None of us should be complacent but we also have to put things in perspective.

This is hardly a "spike" more of a pin prick really !! Yesterday there were 16 new cases in Wales and 3 were in Cardiff, whenever they relax any parts of lockdown they factor in what level of increase is manageable, I would wager this is the type of increase they were expecting.

Just emphasises the need to be sensible and follow social distancing and hygiene guidelines.

The time to worry is if the increase continues over 1-2 weeks then they may need to re-impose some measures.

Coronavirus: Do not go on stag or hen dos says Wales' health minister

Stag and hen-dos should be a thing of the past because of the risk from coronavirus, Wales' Health Minister Vaughan Gething has said.

He spoke after a rise in cases in Cardiff.

Mr Gething blamed the "spike" in the capital on "indoor contact rather than outdoor contact".

He warned against pub crawls, and against ignoring health advice on socialising.

Under current Welsh law individuals can only meet their own household or extended household when indoors in pubs and restaurants.

Meanwhile Mr Gething said a decision may be taken by the end of Wednesday on whether face masks should by worn by school pupils.

Schools are due to reopen in Wales next week.

Jet2 cancels all remaining summer flights to the Balearics

Holiday company Jet2 has announced it has cancelled all flights to the Balearic Islands this summer.

The low-cost airline and package operator said it had taken the "difficult decision" to suspend all flights and holidays to Ibiza, Majorca and Menorca because of "ongoing uncertainty" around the pandemic and current UK government advice.

UK travellers visiting Spain or any of the Spanish Islands must currently self-isolate for 14 days upon return, after a spike in coronavirus infections.

Jet2 said customers would be offered a full refund, a credit note or the option to rebook - with Jet2 promising almost 100,000 additional seats to destinations in Greece, Turkey and Portugal.

The company said it remained committed to working with the Balearic Islands, and bookings for summer 2021 were "looking strong".

UK records highest number of cases since mid June

The UK has recorded a further 1,522 new cases of coronavirus in the past 24 hours - the highest number since the middle of June, according to figures published by the government.

It marks an increase of nearly 500 cases in one day, up from 1,048 on Wednesday. But the rise comes amid an increase in testing, possibly accounting for greater case numbers.

A further 12 people have died within 28 days of a positive test for coronavirus, taking the death toll in the UK to 41,477.

Separate figures published by the UK's statistics agencies show there have now been a total of 57,200 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

The UK recorded 1,108 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 over the past day, the Government said, down slightly from the figure recorded on Friday. There were 12 deaths.

A winter surge of coronavirus would kill 81,000 people in a reasonable worst case scenario, leaked Sage papers reveal, as Matt Hancock warned that restrictions may not be eased over Christmas to avoid an "uptick" in the number of Covid-19 cases.

Commuters will be offered three-day season tickets under plans being studied by ministers to get Britain back to the office.

Schools will be told to operate on a rota if local lockdowns make it impossible to operate as normal, the Education Secretary has announced.

Teaching unions have criticised the Government for introducing new guidance on the reopening of secondary schools just days before millions of pupils are due to return to classes.

GP surgeries are “shutting out” patients despite a fall in deaths from coronavirus, raising fears that potentially serious illnesses are going undetected.

Ch Supt Simon Belcher says: "This type of illegal gathering is totally unacceptable and we are aware of the concerns it is causing for the local community.

"I would like to again remind people of their obligations under the current coronavirus legislation and the overarching goal for everyone to take personal responsibility by following Welsh government regulations to keep Wales safe."

The Welsh government's restrictions allow for up to 30 people to meet outdoors.

CORONAVIRUS deaths in the UK have risen by one to 41,499 as thousands continue to flout quarantine rules over the Bank Holiday.

Earlier today, Chancellor Rishi Sunak is considering a sweeping set of tax increases to help fix the huge hole in the public finances left by the coronavirus pandemic, two newspapers said.

Tax hikes suggested by Treasury officials could raise an extra 20-30 billion pounds a year, the Telegraph and the Sunday Times reported, and some of them could be announced in an autumn budget statement by Sunak.

The UK has recorded 1,406 daily confirmed cases of Covid-19, according to government data published today, down from 1,715 on Sunday. Two people died within 28 days of testing positive for the disease, the daily statistics release said, bringing the total death toll under that measure to 41,501.

Britons scrambled to make the most of the final day of the Eat Out to Help Out scheme before it ends tonight. The Chancellor has been urged to extend the scheme to help city centres.

Civil servants are telling Whitehall staff not to return to the office because the Government will reverse its back-to-work stance in the face of a second wave of coronavirus.

A Tui flight from Zante to Cardiff on which almost 200 passengers and crew were told to self-isolate after coronavirus cases were confirmed was full of "Covidiots", a passenger has said. There are now 16 Covid-19 infections linked to flight TOM6215, Public Health Wales (PHW) has announced, and the airline has launched a "full investigation".

Today the headline reads that they have added 5 more deaths to the total - there were some in nursing homes last week I know.

Lower in the article though, its the lowest number of new added for a while - 174.

Even that is a bit false though - the numbers are falling quicker - I will explain another time but waiting for the officila figures to be posted.

Funny how they are back to talking about deaths now when there are some and not the drop in cases or the 925 recoveries .

There are today 756 less cases in the Balearics than yesterday

The rising number of coronavirus cases in the UK is down to more tests being carried out and does not point to a second wave, an expert on medicine has said.

Medical experts have previously predicted that the UK will see a second wave of the virus in winter, a prediction that was echoed by World Health Organization (WHO) Europe director Hans Kluge last week.

However, Professor Carl Heneghan, from the University of Oxford, believes that a "comprehensive system of national test and trace" has led to an uptick of COVID-19 cases across the UK – but it does not mean the disease is on the rise.
