Small numbers of fans allowed into Scottish football

For the first time since March, fans will be allowed into senior Scottish football matches this weekend.

However, only two games will be allowed to have spectators - and only 300 will be allowed into each game.

Those matches are Aberdeen's v Kilmarnock and Ross County v Celtic. The home sides will hold ballots to see who will be allowed in.

Coronavirus: Social gatherings above six banned in England from 14 September

Social gatherings of more than six people will be illegal in England from Monday - with some exemptions - amid a steep rise in coronavirus cases.

A new legal limit will ban larger groups meeting anywhere socially indoors or outdoors, No 10 said.

But it will not apply to schools, workplaces or Covid-secure weddings, funerals and organised team sports.

It will be enforced through a £100 fine if people fail to comply with police, doubling up to a maximum of £3,200.

Several exemptions apply to the new rules - which come into force on 14 September - with households and support bubbles bigger than six people are unaffected.

A full list of exemptions will be published by the government later.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to deliver further details at a Downing Street news conference on Wednesday.

oxford university trial on covid vaccine suffers a setback as a patient as side effects that could be from vaccine.... so they've suspended the trial! Now hopefully gvmnt will not rely on a vaccine that may never materialise as a way to lift restrictions...

It's a safety issue. They have to stop the trials. But for one person? Hopefully they will quickly sort the issue, but to stop the trials for one person is over reaction. Maybe that person has specific issues and it is why they were chosen for the trial?

I agree the Government should not rely on a vaccine as the way to lift restrictions. There will always be people who react to vaccines/medicine and they will have to take other personal precautions, as in the case of all medicines/vaccines. Some people are allergic to penicillin, but it does not stop the vast majority from receiving it.

Infact if only a small minority have reactions to the vaccine they may not even need it - they have their own natural defence against it or as the majority are clear of the virus, who can they catch it off (herd immunity).

In fairness it is mandatory for any trial that is in final stage to be suspended if anyone shows some sort of reaction....it's a worldwide rule it's to prevent companies overriding system for quick buck! But as soon as why person is ill (could be this week) tests will resume ... these tests involve around 5 countries .... in any event vaccine wont be available until at least middle next year at best? So waiting for vaccine is not an option when comes to lifting lockdown restrictions.

Extra testing is a factor

Even after mass testing was launched, the number of tests carried out on a daily and weekly basis has still been increasing.
This is because more testing centres have opened and lab capacity to process the tests has increased. It means we are able to look more closely for virus circulating in the community than we were when mass testing first started.
If you look at the trend solely in terms of positive cases, the pattern looks like this:

Coronavirus: Merthyr Tydfil and Rhondda tests cause concern

Merthyr Tydfil could be the next area in Wales to see a local lockdown, according to a health data expert.

The former head of health analysis at the Office for National Statistics highlighted the rising proportion of positive coronavirus tests in the area.

In the past seven days, 6% of tests in and around Merthyr were positive.

That is more than the 5.1% in Caerphilly, which has gone into lockdown, and almost double the 3.2% in Rhondda Cynon Taff.

Rhondda MP Chris Bryant has warned a local lockdown could be enforced in the area "by the weekend" if cases continued to rise.

Who can order lockdown in an area? 14 people were rested positive in an event in carmarthenshire on aug 29th.. now leaders of carmarthen ceridigion and pembs councils say we face lockdown if dont keep our distance? Haven't looked at figures for pembs but do know positive tests are very few around 1 or 2 a day when there is a positive result and not every day..... guess scaring people to death is part of the plan? :old:

There were 7,799 test carried out in wales yesterday, 102 of those were positive. That means a total of 1.3% of yesterdays test were positive and 98.7% were negative. Also not 1 person died of covid in the whole of wales's population of 3,000,000 to put in perspective

Coronavirus lockdown-threatened residents asked to wear masks

People in two counties are being asked to wear face masks in work, shops and crowded public spaces in a bid to avoid another local Covid-19 lockdown.

Residents of Rhondda Cynon Taff and Merthyr Tydfil have been asked by councils only to use public transport if "essential".

They have already been warned they face lockdown after an increase in cases.

Merthyr Tydfil has the second highest coronavirus case rate in Wales - behind Caerphilly, already in lockdown.

In a joint statement, Merthyr Tydfil and Rhondda Cynon Taff councils, the local health board and police called for local residents to "take action now".

It’s getting ridiculous here now and even normal people are starting to to question things. There are no patients in the Heath hospital currently with Covid, there are barely any deaths in Wales, in fact far more from other things we live with on a daily basis. I’m not sure of the exact figures but have there been 10 deaths in the last month? Yet we are hearing talk of local lockdowns??
Only 15 cases in Cardiff county out of almost 600,000.....if socialising in pubs etc for 18-30 year olds is the current issue then it seems obvious what the solution is no?

i lost someone i was close to growing up yesterday.. the whole thing got to much for him...so i am aware how its got to people, not that i did not before because ive been beating this drum for months... and still people do not realise how many die normally in this country or that 14 people dead today is a tiny percentage of that... or a positive test does not equal an ill person .. im so fckn angry mate...
no the problem is not a few people going to the pub...its people who just can not be bothered to question anything

Coronavirus: Facemasks in shops to be mandatory in Wales

People in Wales must wear facemasks in shops and other indoor public spaces from Monday, the first minister has announced.

Mark Drakeford said the change came as 20 people in every 100,000 in Wales now had coronavirus.

Indoor meetings of more than six people from an extended household will be illegal from Monday.

The rule will not apply to children aged 11 and under. Up to 30 people from different homes can still meet outside.

Mr Drakeford said: "Today for the first time we will go to a point where 20 people in 100,000 are suffering from coronavirus in Wales.

"That is the threshold we use for people to have to quarantine coming back into the UK.

"And having reached that today, we will be making the use of face coverings mandatory in shops and in closed public spaces in Wales."

He said if the figure fell, the advice could be re-examined.

A FORMER chief scientific adviser has warned the UK is “on the edge of losing control” of coronavirus.

Sir Mark Walport said the only way to stop the virus spreading is to reduce the number of people we all come into contact with, adding that there is an “extremely strong argument” that home working should continue.

Meanwhile health bosses say a Covid-19 app will be launched across England and Wales on September 24.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock described the app's launch as "a defining moment" and said it will help to contain the virus "at a critical time".

Starting to believe this is all about government control of the people. Why haven’t they started up routine surgery yet? How do they even know the latest positive tests are from 17-25 year olds? Most are asymptomatic so have no symptoms at all? Why would they bother to get a test? It doesn’t add up

If you believe gvmnt they are catching up on cancer treatments but that's impossible as dont have the capacity to clear backlog and keep up with new patients or present levels of treatment! Lot of misinformation will be used that is for sure.

Coronavirus: Rhondda Cynon Taf council leader 'furious' over testing capacity

A council leader was left "furious" over restrictions to Covid-19 testing capacity as the Rhondda Cynon Taff struggles to avoid a local lockdown.

Andrew Morgan said a "huge effort" had to be made after learning that Wales was to be limited to only 60 tests.

There are UK-wide capacity issues due to rising demands on laboratories.

The Welsh Government said it scrambled to increase testing capacity after being left in a "deeply unsatisfactory position" on Friday night.

Why is there a problem?

The mobile testing units are new, run under the Lighthouse labs partnership between the private sector and UK and devolved governments.

They can normally carry out around 300 tests a day - but high demand around the UK as cases have risen has meant a limit of 60 was set for Wales.

A similar number was set for Northern Ireland, with just 90 testing slots available for Scotland.
