Covid: We could live with virus 'like we do flu' by end of year, says Hancock -

Vaccines and treatments could mean that - by the end of the year - Covid-19 is an illness we can live with "like we do flu", the health secretary has said.

Matt Hancock told the Daily Telegraph he hoped new drugs by the end of 2021 could make Covid a "treatable disease".

The drugs - and vaccines - represent "our way out to freedom", he said.

However, scientists have warned against treating coronavirus like the flu, as mutations are getting "more dangerous" and "more infectious".

Dr Sarah Pitt, a virologist at the University of Brighton, told the BBC: "It's not a type of flu. It's not the same sort of virus. It doesn't cause the same sort of disease, it's very, very nasty."

Mr Hancock said he hoped all UK adults could be offered the vaccine "a bit before" September.

Oh dear......this is what many on this board were saying many months ago......and now the Health Minister confirms what was obvious to the mere layman.

I was going to say you couldn't write the script, but we did.......and we know nothing!

400 economic migrants, who’ve sneaked into our country illegally, were vaccinated in the 4 star Crowne Plaza in London when local GPs took it on themselves to prioritise them over British Citizens. A fekkin disgrace.

Covid: Vaccine given to 15 million in UK as PM hails 'extraordinary feat' -

More than 15 million people in the UK have now had their first coronavirus vaccine, in what Boris Johnson described as a "significant milestone".

The PM hailed the "extraordinary feat", reached just over two months after the first jab was given on 8 December.

It comes as the government is expected to announce on Monday it has met its pledge to offer a jab to everyone in the top four priority groups in the UK.

The rollout is now being expanded to over-65s and the clinically vulnerable.

In a video, Mr Johnson praised a "truly national, UK-wide effort", adding that in England the jab had been offered to all those in the top four priority groups.

Wales has also met the target.

But "no-one is resting on their laurels," Mr Johnson said. "We've still got a long way to go to. And there will undoubtedly be bumps in the road. But after all we've achieved, I know we can go forward with great confidence."

Excellent news......I am looking forward to the new set of numbers which will obviously soon be released. Something along the lines of:

Vaccinated. 15 million

Died from vaccine: 0

New cases from those that have been vaccinated: 0 (which may be a fib as my father in law was vaccinated and is now fighting for his life.......perfectly healthy before the jab)

Died from other causes: I guess anybody who unfortunately passes after taking the vaccine, but I'm pretty sure it won't say "with covid".

Bottom line is it's your free will to inject any substance into your own body, good luck. :bluebird:

Firstly, sorry to hear of your father in laws sad situation, and hope he pulls through
What makes me concerned is I have heard doctors now saying "well they were old,and not well, there is always a bigger risk for these people, when taking a jab" so why risk it then, especially if they are nearly dying anyway? There have already been numerous cases of death not long after receiving this jab, of people that were not showing signs of covid, but we're jabbed anyway, and as it seems at a severe risk to their lives.

When it's been suggested in the past, that these old and infirm people were close to the end of their lives, that it wasn't the case, now death rates in care homes have rocketed, suddenly these same older people were"at high risk from the jab" because they were old and unwell?? Can't have it both ways. :old: :bluebird:

Covid: Vaccine roll out rate can now 'fly' in Wales -

The roll out of the Covid-19 vaccine can now "fly", the doctor in charge of Wales' programme has said.

Dr Gill Richardson added ongoing studies were looking at whether the immunisations would become regular and routine, similar to the flu jab.

It comes as figures show one in four people in Wales has received a vaccine.

Dr Richardson said vaccine supply would increase in March and, by April, there would be "levels of supply that we haven't hitherto seen".

"We will have more than enough vaccines to give the first doses to all of those who require it," she said.

Dr Richardson added that the infrastructure put in place to immunise the population took "slightly longer to build" but now that it's in place the process could "fly".

"You've seen how incredible the NHS efforts have been in delivering that vaccine and we have nowhere near maximized our capacity to immunise," she said.

Just to make it clear, Matt Hancock only stated we could live with the virus in a similar way to flu, as the vaccine programme is now in place. And this summary seems sensible.
I don't think he would have said this with no vaccine in place which was the case until last December.
By the way, my 95 year old dad received the vaccine 2 weeks ago. He had no after effects and says it's the best thing he could have done. So fellas, it's not all bad news!

Covid: Boris Johnson to focus on 'data, not dates' for lockdown easing -

Boris Johnson says it is "absolutely right" to take a "data not dates" approach to leaving lockdown, stressing England will ease measures "cautiously".

The prime minister said he would set out "what we can" in a road map for easing restrictions on Monday.

"We want to be going one way from now on, based on the incredible vaccination rollout," he said.

It follows a call from scientists for a data-led approach to lifting measures.

Speaking at a mass vaccination centre in Cwmbran, south Wales, Mr Johnson said relaxation of measures would be done in "stages" and that the reopening of hospitality was one of the last things to return after the first lockdown.

"You have to remember from last year that we opened up hospitality fully as one of the last things that we did because there is obviously an extra risk of transmission from hospitality," he said.

Covid in Wales: Primary schools could reopen fully from 15 March -

Primary school children aged eight and over may be able to return to school from 15 March if Covid cases continue to fall, under Welsh Government plans.

First Minister Mark Drakeford will announce on Friday proposals for the return of more pupils to classrooms in Wales.

Some older children may also go back to school by 15 March.

However, stay-at-home lockdown rules are expected to stay in place for another three weeks.

Children aged between three and seven - those in the foundation phase - are returning to school from Monday.

While Wales' case rate is at its lowest since September last year, the Welsh Government said the stay-at-home restrictions are still needed to ensure a safe return to school.

But changes for shops and hairdressers could be on the cards in three weeks' time.

Covid: Welsh businesses react to plan for lockdown easing -

Some businesses may be able to start reopening from March under plans revealed by Wales' first minister.

Ahead of the latest lockdown review, Mark Drakeford said talks were in place about opening parts of the tourism sector in time for Easter.

Meanwhile, he said some non-essential retailers may reopen at the end of the period of restrictions, as well as more children returning to school.

Mr Drakeford said any plans depended on the numbers of coronavirus cases.

Covid vaccine: All UK adults to be offered jab by 31 July - PM -

All adults in the UK will be offered their first dose of a coronavirus vaccine by the end of July, the prime minister has pledged.

More than 17 million people have been given a jab since the UK's Covid vaccine rollout began in December 2020.

But Boris Johnson said he now wants the programme to "go further and faster".

He said the July target would allow vulnerable people to be protected "sooner" and would help to further ease lockdown rules across the country.

The prime minister is expected to hold a final meeting on Sunday about how to ease England's lockdown, before he sets out the full "road map" on Monday.

The new plans mean that by 15 April, all adults aged 50 and over, as well as younger people with underlying health conditions that put them at higher risk, should have been offered a jab.

With every adult set to be offered the vaccine by July fingers crossed we can have August in the sun, fans coming back to grounds, pubs and restaurants open etc etc.

Lockdown: Boris Johnson unveils plan to end England restrictions by 21 June -

A new four-step plan to ease England's lockdown could see all legal limits on social contact lifted by 21 June, if strict conditions are met.

Shops, hairdressers, gyms and outdoor hospitality could reopen on 12 April in England under plans set out by the PM.

From 17 May, two households might be allowed to mix in homes, while the rule of six could apply in places like pubs.

It requires four tests on vaccines, infection rates and new coronavirus variants to be met at each stage.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson told MPs the plan aimed to be "cautious but irreversible" and at every stage decisions would be led by "data not dates".

There was "no credible route to a zero-Covid Britain nor indeed a zero-Covid world", he said.

Judging on those statistics you'd think, so wouldn't you. I'll just say this ; I don't trust this Government to do anything that goes against the advice of the 'experts'. If they say we need vaccinations 4 times a year we'll have them. If they say we have to wear face masks in the winter months in future to prevent a re-occurrence of the virus, then we will have to. If they impose future lockdowns because of reports of viruses in other Countries, we'll have them...

Covid in Scotland: Nicola Sturgeon unveils 'cautious' route out of lockdown -

The reopening of Scotland's economy - including shops, bars, restaurants, gyms and hairdressers - is expected to start from 26 April, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has announced.

She said it was hoped that the country's stay at home restrictions could be lifted on 5 April.

Four people from two households will be allowed to meet outdoors from 15 March.

All primary pupils and S4 to S6 secondary students could return to school from that date.

However, pupils in the first three years of secondary school are unlikely to return until after the Easter holidays.

Ms Sturgeon said the Scottish government's strategic framework was "deliberately cautious" at this stage.

Covid vaccine: All Wales' adults to be offered jab by 31 July -

All adults in Wales will have been offered a first Covid vaccine by 31 July, the health minister has promised.

Vaughan Gething said matching Prime Minister Boris Johnson's jab pledge for the whole UK would depend on supplies.

The new date is a few months ahead of the original autumn plan laid out by the Welsh Government in January.

Over-50s and over-16s with an underlying health condition will be offered vaccines by the middle of April, Mr Gething added.

Wales is currently ahead of the other UK nations in the proportion of the population that has been vaccinated.

Wales has the lowest Covid case rate of any of the UK nations for the last three weeks - with an infection rate of less than 76 cases per 100,000 people.

Mr Gething said coronavirus cases in Wales are now at their lowest level since September and the country's R number is between 0.6 and 0.9.

UK Covid alert level drops as NHS threat 'recedes' -

The UK's coronavirus alert level has been lowered from level five to four in all four nations as the risk that the NHS could be overwhelmed "has receded".

The four UK chief medical officers and NHS England's national medical director agreed the change following advice from the Joint Biosecurity Centre.

The alert level had moved to level five on 4 January, shortly before England and Scotland began fresh lockdowns.

The top medics urged people to "remain vigilant" by following lockdown rules.

A change in the alert level does not automatically mean restrictions can ease, but it helps to inform government decisions on the rules.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon have this week set out their separate plans to lift lockdown restrictions. Northern Ireland and Wales will outline their plans in the coming weeks.
