Coronavirus hotspot 'due to health board case'

The Aneurin Bevan health board area may be a coronavirus "hotspot" because a member of staff at the health board contracted the disease, the first minister said at the press conference.

“It looks like there’s more there because we’ve tested more people than elsewhere,” Mark Drakeford said.

He said there was also a degree of randomness about the emergence of hotspots.

“It had a very early case of a member of health board staff acquiring the virus, and therefore testing in Gwent was carried out more widely and earlier than other parts of Wales, and we may be partly picking up parts of that," Mr Drakeford said.

He said there was evidence the disease was moving from east to west of the UK - Newport is on the eastern border of Wales.

Mr Drakeford said coronavirus fatal locations were not being released to protect patient confidentiality.

He said about a thousand tests a day were being carried out across Wales.

Currently running at double the death rate of Scotland relative to population. Any ideas why that is ? I know the numbers are relatively small but there's got to be something to explain that.

This might sound stupid - but the main factor is the virus is moving east/west from London more than it going north to Scotland .
Having said that there are plenty of places eg Birmingham a high hot spot and Scotland is further away again .
If you look at the " Heat Charts " parts of Scotland have very few cases - the same with Ireland .
Will update later tonight with these heat charts - The only place safe is either the North or South Pole !!!

Morning All - Yesterday some people asked how these figs get reported - Below are the Gov time lines for it's update -

Number of cases

As of 9am on 30 March 2020, a total of 134,946 people have been tested, of which 112,805 were confirmed negative and 22,141 were confirmed positive.

As of 5pm on 29 March 2020, 1,408 patients in the UK who tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) have died.

The figures for test results and for deaths are compiled from different sources. This is why the figures for deaths are reported from an earlier point in time than the figures for test results.

Jesus Belgium 192 deaths in a day. Relative to population that's equivalent to Italy having more than a thousand and us nearly 1200. I always thought Belgium could be hit very hard in number of deaths due to their high level of smoking but we have no given right to escape any of this.

Yet we now have the liberal elite and press complaining that the police are being too heavy handed with their enforcement. First time in decades we've given them any authority and these f*cking arseholes want policing by consent. They shouldn't be asking, they should be telling ONCE. Let the minority of wankers ignoring the current situation think their in control of their actions and we're fucked.

We should curfew for all non essential works after about 7 in the evening and we should charging those guilty of reckless behaviour. Court and Jail can be deferred until this all over. No point in burdening the criminal justice system or prisons at this point, but make it clear they're getting a stint inside. And let the reckless rich can buy their way out of the stretch - starting at a grand a day and the very rich 10 grand a day.

UK's true death toll still unclear

Michelle Roberts

Health editor, BBC News online

The UK's Office for National Statistics (ONS) has released new figures on coronavirus deaths in England and Wales, which include how many were registered up to 20 March – the day that pubs and clubs were ordered to shut down to help tackle the outbreak.

What’s different about the data is it looks at community deaths – people who died at home or in residential care whom doctors recorded on the death certificate as probably having Covid-19. There were 103 of these – 1% of all deaths.

The ONS also trawled a few days ahead of 20 March to capture any deaths stuck in a recording backlog. That brings the total to 210 deaths involving coronavirus.

That’s 40 more than the 170 deaths announced by the government at the time – those were all hospital deaths of patients who had tested positive for coronavirus and so definitely had the infection.

In comparison, there are not enough tests to check how many people in the community are infected or how many deaths are linked to Covid-19.

So these community death figures are interesting but they don’t give us a clearer idea of the true toll.

Quite frankly you are talking complete bollocks. What people and it is ordinary people not the liberal elite is complaining about is police who don't seem to have an ounce of common sense behaving like little Hitlers. Harrasing people walking alone in the countryside etc. In one case yesterday they told an elderly couple sitting alone on a park bench in a park in Ipswich in an almost deserted park to go home. Wanders like you are just making the situation worse by this hysterical ranting.

Scottish deaths reach 60

The number of people who have died after being diagnosed with coronavirus in Scotland has reached 60, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon says - a rise of 13 on Monday's total.

As of Tuesday morning, 1,993 people had tested positive for the virus - an increase of 430 on the previous day, she added, speaking at a briefing in Edinburgh.

Ms Sturgeon said 108 of these positive tests had come from a lab which was unable to submit data over the weekend, which is “part of the reason why this increase is so high”.

The total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Wales jumped to 1,563 in Public Health Wales' daily update today.

Geographically, Aneurin Bevan in south east Wales remains the health board area with the most positive tests - 590.

A number of suggestions have made as to why the Gwent area has had so many confirmed cases, including the amount of testing, its proximity to England and concerns around the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport.

Possibly we have a larger proportion of deep coal miners still alive. Terrible disease for anyone with compromised breathing and by now they'd all be in the vulnerable age group. It might also partly explain the hot spot in the Gwent valleys.

London mayor asks football clubs to help NHS

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has written to nine football clubs in England's capital city to ask for their assistance in the fight against coronavirus.

He has asked clubs in the top two divisions, including Arsenal, Chelsea and West Ham, for access to team doctors, physios, paramedics and other clinically trained staff, as well as stadiums and accommodation.

Tottenham are not included as they are already helping City Hall.

Mr Khan said: “As we work together to tackle the threat of coronavirus, the community spirit of London’s football clubs has shone through.

"Many have already offered support and are assisting the response in their local communities.

"This week, I have written to the capital’s Premier League and Championship clubs outlining what they can do to help our fantastic NHS and I’m grateful for the hugely positive response we have received.”

A 13-year-old boy who tested positive for coronavirus has died, King's College Hospital Trust in London said.

A spokesman for the trust said the boy's death had been referred to the coroner but gave no further details.

It comes as the biggest daily increase in the number of people who have died with coronavirus in the UK - 381 - was reported.

As of 17:00 BST on Monday, the number of UK deaths linked to the virus was 1,789.

"Sadly, a 13-year old boy who tested positive for Covid-19 has passed away, and our thoughts and condolences are with the family at this time," King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust said.

"The death has been referred to the Coroner and no further comment will be made."

Loss of taste a key indicator -

New research from the UK suggests that losing your sense of smell and taste could be a good way to tell whether you're infected.

King's College London says its scientists have asked people to log their symptoms daily in an app.

The result showed that 59% of the 1.5 million people who participated and tested positive, noticed a loss of smell and taste. According to the researchers, this makes it a very good indicator for spotting infections.

Under current UK government guidance people are advised to self-isolate if they have a new continuous cough and/or fever. The World Health Organization says other symptoms can include shortness of breath, aches and pains, and a sore throat.
