I am trying to get out to Thailand at the moment. No chance as they are not allowing anyone in or out of the country and no real sign of that changing. They have only had 50 deaths there as a result of Covid. People may say well done on that score, why couldn't we in the UK do the same. You try telling that to the huge number of people there working in the tourism industry, which has been completely decimated by the lockdown rule, the people I know out there are crying out for international tourists, but their government are saying no. No furlow there that is for sure. You are on your own.

How on earth do you get a good balancing act between the number of deaths and the economy not collapsing. I would also like to know the number of deaths attributed to flu or flu like symptoms in the last 6 months in the UK. Normally it is in the 10's of thousands every year. I would not be surprised if a lot these have been put in the Covid statistics.

I give up with a portion of the population in Cardiff.Around Roath Park there are signs requesting everyone goes the same way around the lake and keep your distance. Every time I visit you see families and blokes going the other way. They are either, thick or just don't give a damn.

No 10 ditches plan to shield over-50s after backlash from ministers

Proposals to extend shielding to some over-50s this winter have been abandoned after Cabinet ministers mounted a backlash against the proposal.

Downing Street killed off the plan to tell over-50s to stay at home after ministers warned it was impractical, could damage the economy and sent out mixed messages on the day the Government wanted workers to get back to the office.

Industry chiefs and prominent backbenchers including former Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith also warned it was “economic madness” by depriving business of key managers and experience at a time when they were needed to help rescue industry in face of a recession.

Another U - Turn : But more than happy with this one ;) What were they thinking at the time :o

Overall death toll could be more than 60,000

When looking at the overall death toll from coronavirus, official figures count such deaths in three different ways.

Public Health England counts the deaths of people who have tested positive for coronavirus, providing the government with a figure every 24 hours.

But the ONS publishes weekly updates using two other measures.

The first includes all deaths where coronavirus was mentioned on the death certificate, even if the person had not been tested for the virus. The latest figures using this measure suggest there had been almost 56,000 deaths by 24 July.

The ONS also looks at all UK deaths over and above the number usually expected for the time of year - known as excess deaths. The latest figures for this measure show the death toll was just under 64,000 by 24 July.

well its not a like for like comparison , our new infections are individually considerably lower than in Germany , Spain and France.. despite testing more people than those 3 countries combined... test more, find more , especially as you say heavily testing areas where infections are highest...

Bank of England boss Bailey backs end of furlough scheme

The Governor of the Bank of England has backed the government's decision to end its furlough scheme in October.

Andrew Bailey told the BBC it was important that policymakers helped workers "move forward" and not keep them in unproductive jobs.

He said coronavirus would inevitably mean that some jobs became redundant.

The Bank also predicted the economic slump caused by Covid-19 will be less severe than expected, but warned the recovery will also take longer.

More than nine million jobs have been furloughed under the government's job retention scheme, but the Bank expects most people to go back to work as the economy recovers.

Trying to compare with other countries is not really viable either because of way they calculate what people die of? We seem to count everyone who dies over 5yr deaths average? Other countries only count those diagnosed positive with corvid! Personally i take no notice of figures as like everything to do with stats it can and does get manipulated to suit someones agenda/purpose. Not saying it as not been bad but make my own mind up through being out in the hospitals and talking to people on front line ..

Coronavirus: Stricter measures introduced in Preston

Lockdown measures are being reintroduced in Preston from midnight after a rise in Covid-19 cases.

Residents in the Lancashire city are facing stricter restrictions, which include banning separate households from meeting each other at home.

The council had already asked residents to follow extra precautions in a bid to halt the spread of the virus.

The move brings Preston in line with measures in east Lancashire, Greater Manchester and parts of west Yorkshire.

Coronavirus: Reopening of swimming pools and gyms in Wales confirmed

The planned reopening of swimming pools, fitness studios, gyms and leisure centres will go ahead on Monday, it has been confirmed.

Children's play centres can also reopen but areas which are not easy to clean, such as ball pits, must remain shut.

The Welsh Government said the businesses are legally required "to minimise the risk of exposure to coronavirus" on their premises.

Councils will be given extra powers to enforce the requirements.

Rise in new cases amid concern over hotspots

Daily confirmed cases are starting to edge up again after they fell significantly from their April peak as a result of lockdown restrictions imposed a month earlier.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said the government now has to "squeeze that brake pedal" and has postponed further easing of measures across England.

A further 758 cases were confirmed across the UK on Saturday.

Clusters of cases have already been reported in the north of England, and millions of people in Greater Manchester, East Lancashire and parts of West Yorkshire have been banned from meeting separate households in private homes or gardens.

Pools, indoor gyms and other leisure facilities remain closed in Leicester.

It's mainly around the registering of deaths. I don't think any deaths outside the hospital setting get added until the Tuesday.

In the UK, people who have been in contact with confirmed coronavirus cases may get a knock on their door if tracers are unable to reach them over the phone under new plans to give local authorities more control of the track and trace system.

Boris Johnson has said getting all children back to school full-time in England next month is the "right thing for everybody" amid calls to boost coronavirus testing and tracing to ensure a safe return.

The Prime Minister also added that the Government will "not hesitate" to impose a quarantine system for travellers from other countries if needed.

Gyms, swimming pools, leisure centres and play centres are reopening as lockdown continues to ease in Wales.

The NHS test and trace system in England is cutting 6,000 staff by the end of August, the government has announced.

Coronavirus: Face mask law extended if virus 'starts to spread'

Face coverings will be made mandatory in more settings if coronavirus "starts to spread", the Welsh first minister has said.

In Wales they are only compulsory on public transport. People are advised to wear them in public places when they cannot social distance.

In England and Scotland they are mandatory in shops.

First Minister Mark Drakeford made the comments during a live Facebook question and answer session.

"We will make them mandatory in other places if coronavirus starts to spread in Wales again," he said.

Official figures have confirmed that the UK suffered its biggest economic slump on record between April and June, with GDP plummeting by 20.4% during the pandemic and plunging the country into recession for the first time since 2009.

Head teachers said a last-minute plan to ensure that no student is penalised because exams were cancelled in the pandemic is "panicked and chaotic". It will mean students are awarded whichever is highest out of their estimated grades, their mock exam results, and an optional written exam in the autumn.

Wales is also considering changes to ensure students are not disadvantaged, while Northern Ireland's exam board said there would be "no change", although students can use mock exam results to appeal against their grade.

Airlines are taking too long to refund customers whose flights were cancelled due to the virus, according to consumer group Which? Some customers say they have not been repaid five months later.

More than 1,000 new cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in the UK in the last 24 hours, new figures from the Department of Health show.

Whilst cases are rising in uk it is in the 15 to 45 age group! but in june/july hospital admissions fell which indicates that the age group most infected do not require hospital treatment and rise could be accounted for by more testing, experts are saying no 2nd spike reached at present time. :old:
