Covid: Over-40s next in line for vaccine, NHS Wales' head says -

People aged in their 40s will be next in line to get the coronavirus vaccine, Wales' chief medical officer has said.

The four UK nations are doing this, under the plan to vaccinate all adults by the end of July.

Dr Frank Atherton said the plan for Wales depends on "supply matching our ambition".

Teachers and police officers were among those who lobbied to be prioritised - but will now be vaccinated in line with their age group.

News of the next phase comes as Public Health Wales figures show more than 270,000 people aged in their 50s and 60s, have had their first dose of Covid vaccine.

All four of Wales' chief constables have criticised the decision not to prioritise frontline workers, saying they were "incredibly disappointed".

Head teachers' union NAHT Cymru said all front-line staff "should be protected now".

I have to say, as a person who currently is unable to be jabbed, to not treat teachers and ALL emergency services as priority cases is very poor form indeed :banghead: shameful judgement imho. :old: :bluebird:

Agree, mate. Some of the stories coming out about social degenerates threatening public employees to cough and spit at them in the hope they get Covid-19 are alarming...

The Government can help lessen those threats with a simple decision; give all public employees on the front-line the vaccine as a matter of priority

Covid-19: Nearly 20 million people in UK have first vaccine dose -

Nearly 20 million people in the UK have now had their first dose of coronavirus vaccine, according to the government's latest figures.

As of Friday, more than 19.6 million people had received their first dose - an increase of more than half a million in a day.

Meanwhile, the number of people who have had their second jab has risen to 768,810.

The government is aiming to offer all adults the vaccine by the end of July.

When will it be my turn to be vaccinated?
The next target is to offer a first dose to all over-50s by 15 April, as well as people aged 16-64 with certain underlying health conditions and unpaid carers for disabled and elderly people.

After that, they will start offering jabs to people by age group.

There are no plans yet to vaccinate children, although trials have been announced to test the Oxford University jab on children.

It's such a simple decision to make too Chris :banghead: as for the degenerate b@stards, how about a 5 yr jail sentence if found guilty? Should make the tw@ts re consider their actions. Health Secretary Matt Hancock has hailed new data which shows a single shot of either of the two main vaccines in use in the UK cuts hospitalisations by 80%.

PM Boris Johnson has defended the government's measures to prevent new coronavirus variants being imported into the UK as health officials in England seek one individual who tested positive for the Brazil variant - but did not give their details.

School staff do not have a markedly higher risk of infection than other working-age adults, a study suggests.

The chair of the Transport Select Committee believes the introduction of vaccine passports is "inevitable" in light of the European Commission's announcement of an equivalent scheme.

"It just makes sense now to make sure it's workable and will include everything that's needed to give people confidence to fly again," Conservative MP Hugh Merriman told Radio 4's PM.

Furlough support scheme to be extended in Budget until September -

The furlough scheme will be extended until the end of September, the chancellor is to announce in Wednesday's Budget.

Rishi Sunak said the scheme - which pays 80% of employees' wages for hours they cannot work - would help millions through "the challenging months ahead".

Some 600,000 more self-employed people will also be eligible for government help as access to grants is widened.

But Labour said the support schemes should have been extended "months ago".

There are currently about four million people who are using the coronavirus job retention scheme (CJRS) - or furlough - the highest level since last summer.

Nurses' union anger over 'pitiful' 1% NHS pay rise -

The government can expect a "backlash" if it goes ahead with a proposed 1% pay rise for NHS staff in England next year, a nursing union has warned.

The health department has made the recommendation in a submission to the independent panel that advises on NHS salaries.

The Royal College of Nursing called the suggested rise "pitiful" and said nurses should be getting 12.5% more.

NHS staff have been excluded from a pay freeze for most public sector workers.

The NHS Pay Review Body is due to recommend salary levels for health service staff before early May, before ministers then make a final decision.

In its submission, the health department said awarding NHS staff a "headline" pay increase of more than 1% "would require re-prioritisation".

Covid-19: Brazil variant case traced, and nurses prepare possible strike -

A mystery person infected with the Covid variant of concern first found in Brazil has now been traced. Six cases of the apparently more contagious P.1 variant had been located in the UK - but the identity of one patient remained unknown. Health Secretary Matt Hancock told a Downing Street briefing the person concerned has been staying at home - and there was no sign of further transmission. But extra testing is being put in place in Croydon, where they live.

At the same briefing, the health secretary defended a proposed 1% pay increase for NHS staff in England this year, amid a backlash from unions. Mr Hancock said the proposal was "what we think is affordable" given financial pressures caused by the pandemic. But the union the Royal College of Nursing has set up a fund to prepare for possible strike action over the proposals, which it calls derisory. Our health editor says the unions see the proposal as scant reward for the huge efforts of staff during the pandemic.

Rangers' Premiership win: Celebrating fans urged to go home -

Police say a "small number" of arrests were made and fines issued after crowds of fans gathered to celebrate Rangers winning the Scottish Premiership.

Large numbers of supporters made their way to Ibrox Stadium and Glasgow's George Square to mark the achievement despite warnings to stay at home.

Nicola Sturgeon said the crowds were "infuriating and disgraceful" and could delay the end of the Covid lockdown.

Rangers took the title after Celtic failed to beat Dundee United.

The result gave Rangers an unassailable 20-point lead and the title for the first time in 10 years.

Under current guidance, public gatherings are banned and a maximum of two people from two households are allowed to meet outdoors.

Covid: Boris Johnson really awful, says Mark Drakeford -

The First Minister of Wales described the prime minister as being "really, really awful", following an emergency government meeting last year.

Mark Drakeford's comments featured in an S4C documentary which filmed his response to the Covid pandemic.

He suggested he felt a "sense of despair" after the Cobra meeting, on Zoom, where a lorry travel ban in France was discussed.

Downing Street has been asked comment on the broadcast, on Sunday night.

The documentary also shows that the Welsh Government cabinet was split last year over whether it should reduce in law the number of households that could meet at Christmas, instead of just issuing guidance.

France banned lorry traffic from Britain last December amid concern over a new variant of the virus found in the UK.

Covid vaccine: First dose given to a million in Wales -

More than one million people in Wales have been given their first dose of a coronavirus vaccine.

A total of 1,007,391 people had been vaccinated by Monday night, Public Health Wales said, but it confirmed the true total would be higher.

It means 31.9% of the Welsh population have had a first dose.

The million milestone of doses given - rather than individuals vaccinated - was reached on 27 February by including both first and second doses.

People delivering the vaccine - and families grateful to have received it - have been reflecting on the milestone.

Covid: 'Stay-local' rules likely to differ across Wales -

Any "stay-local" policy introduced as lockdown is eased is likely to differ depending on what part of Wales people live in, the health minister said.

Vaughan Gething suggested people living in rural areas might be able to travel further to access facilities easily available to people in urban areas.

"If we do go to stay local, it will be slightly different depending on where you live," he told a press briefing.

He suggested there could be a "few weeks" of stay-local guidance.

First Minister Mark Drakeford is due to review Covid restrictions on Friday and has previously suggested there could be some easing of the stay-at-home instruction.

The Welsh Government has announced a relaxation of lockdown rules, with the first coming into effect on Saturday.

However, supermarkets are not allowed to sell non-essential items for another week and retail shops remain closed.

The first minister said the easing of rules in Wales was the start of a "phased approach" out of lockdown.

It has also now been confirmed primary schools will be open to all pupils on Monday.

Secondary school students in exam years (11 and 13) will also return to the classroom and schools will have the flexibility to bring year 10 and 12 learners back.

From Saturday 27 March, if case rates remain low:

Libraries and self-contained accommodation can reopen, but you can only holiday with people from your own household.

Organised children's activities can restart

Stay local restrictions will be lifted

The Welsh Government also wants to reopen all shops and remaining close-contact services from 12 April, if the situation continues to improve.

Mr Drakeford said he was taking a "careful and cautious" phased approach to lifting restrictions.
