Boris Johnson has warned it may be "bumpy through to Christmas" and beyond as the UK deals with coronavirus.

Speaking to the BBC's Andrew Marr, the PM said there was "hope" in beating Covid, but called on the public to "act fearlessly but with common sense".

He said the government was taking a "balanced" approach between saving lives and protecting the economy.

His comments come as the UK announced more than 10,000 new cases for the first time since mass testing began.

There were 12,872 new cases announced on Saturday. However, the government said a technical issue meant some cases earlier in the week were not recorded at the time so had been included in Saturday's data.

Don't get me wrong I have always and will always big up the NHS to any american willing to listen but from reading here & talking to family this has really shown up some of the shortcomings with the system. Since March I have had the following, yearly heart tests, MRI for back, x-rays for back and x-rays for my chest yesterday and blood tests twice. Besides visiting the heart specialist I have seen the neurologist 3 times & had a monthly call with him and the family (GP) doctor twice. All of this because none of it was done in a hospital but in different places. I need a 3rd surgery on my back and could have had it by now had I not chosen to wait, and not because of Covid but because I don't want a metal plate holding my spine together while the pain is manageable.

I'm one of the lucky ones who has excellent health insurance through my wife but the point is that the system here hasn't closed down like it seems to have in the UK. This is not the time or place for an argument over which is the better system but to give a different perspective.

Allan, I'm no expert but where I live has a population of 530,000 compared to 478,000 for Cardiff (according to google) so pretty similar in size and just for the MRI I had a choice of about 20 places I could go compared to ? if I was in Cardiff. No one entity is deciding if these should close down or open up but they get to decide for themselves. I would say most if not all of these closed down for a month or two but now they're all open with a lot less appointments per day. A lot of them do multiple tests, MRI, x-rays and other tests that would be done in a hospital in the UK and my heart specialist is able to do every test imaginable at his office and there are 6 or 7 heart specialists in just his office. So I would say that it is the system here that stopped it collapsing compared to the UK but under normal circumstances both have their good & bad points.

There are 2 huge hospitals within the city limits and although I know one stopped doing outpatient surgeries for a while it wasn't longer than a month.

Like I said before I have excellent health insurance and have seen the bills they charge over here, almost gave me another heart attack. I am one of the lucky ones & would hate to not have insurance even before the current situation.

Think Google is a bit out it's more like 350k people but guess outlying areas are inc with google ! For whatever reason the nhs does not have enough specialists or capacity in this country to treat everyone within a reasonable timeframe and that's the problem.... also specialist pick and choose where they practice even with incentives they wont practice in places such as pembrokeshire.... like said from what I know and see on my NHS travels nhs in not condition to treat the accumalative backlog in outpatients or operations..... deaths will be more than covid I am sure from waiting for treatment and ops..

So depending on what figures they use will depend on what they will do regarding lockdown very easily manipulated by looks of things..

Covid: MPs call for more clarity on local lockdowns

MPs from the Midlands and northern England are calling for more detail on possible plans to close restaurants and pubs in areas worst-hit by coronavirus.

They met ministers earlier, with some venting frustration about potential restrictions appearing in newspapers before being announced in Parliament.

A tiered system of measures could be introduced next Wednesday, in an effort to stall rising infection rates.

The government said it was trying to create "greater consistency on rules".

There were 17,540 new cases of coronavirus recorded in the UK on Thursday, up from the 14,162 reported the day before, government data showed. A further 77 people died after testing positive for the virus within 28 days.

MPs took part in a video call with health ministers Nadine Dorries and Edward Argar - and England's chief medical officer Chris Whitty - earlier on Thursday.

Workers in companies that are forced to shut down by new coronavirus restrictions will get two-thirds of their wages paid by the government, the chancellor announced. A Treasury source said the scheme, which begins on 1 November, could costs hundreds of millions of pounds a month.

Businesses said it could "cushion the blow" of further shutdowns, but the hospitality industry said many venues that were not facing closure were still struggling as they had to operate with reduced capacity.

The Premier League has introduced a £14.95 pay-per-view option for games that had previously not been selected for broadcast, while fans are unable to attend matches.

Coronavirus cases "increased rapidly" in the UK at the end of September, a survey suggests, with up to one in 240 people being infected in the week up to 1 October. Scientific advisors to the government warn the country is "very close" to the levels of hospital admissions seen in March.

Pubs and restaurants across central Scotland have closed for more than two weeks as part of measures intended to bring infections under control.

Coronavirus: Bangor enters local lockdown restrictions

The city of Bangor has gone into local lockdown from 18:00 BST on Saturday.

It means that about 16,000 people there cannot go in or out of the area without good reason, such as work or study.

Bangor's restrictions will affect eight wards in the city: Garth, Hirael, Menai, Deiniol, Marchog, Glyder, Hendre and Dewi.

The city had seen a significant cluster of coronavirus cases and the incident rate stands at about 400 cases per 100,000 people.

It becomes the second area to face a local lockdown while the rest of its county does not, following Llanelli in Carmarthenshire.

Discussions were held earlier but it was decided not to extend restrictions to anywhere else in Gwynedd.

Covid: Second national lockdown possible, says top UK scientist

Another national coronavirus lockdown is a possibility and we have to do what we can to avoid that at all costs, a leading UK scientist has said.

Prof Peter Horby said the UK was at a "precarious point" as Covid-19 cases and hospital admissions continue to rise.

It comes after England's deputy chief medical officer warned the country was at a "tipping point".

Ministers say their local approach to restrictions is the right way forward.

The prime minister is expected to announce tougher local restrictions on Monday.

In a statement to MPs, Boris Johnson will outline plans for a three-tier system, where each region in England is placed into a tier based on the severity of cases in the area.

He is currently holding a call with cabinet ministers to update them on the next steps.

Across the UK, the R number - the average number of people each infected person passes the virus on to - is now estimated between 1.2 and 1.5. Anything above 1.0 means cases are increasing.

Covid-19: Wales close to a tipping point, first minister says -

Wales is "close to a tipping point" with the number of coronavirus cases rising rapidly across parts of the country, the first minister has said.

Mark Drakeford said the number of patients with suspected or confirmed Covid in hospital had gone up "steadily over the last couple of weeks".

"We're heading back to the sorts of demands on the health service that we saw earlier in the year," he said.

People in 17 areas of Wales now face local lockdown rules due to the virus.

A total of 1,669 people in Wales have died with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic, according to figures published by Public Health Wales on Sunday.

It also said 30,121 people have tested positive for the virus, with 467 new cases reported on Sunday.

England's deputy chief medical officer Jonathan Van-Tam has said the seasons were "against us" and the country was running into a "headwind" due to mounting cases.

Covid: Boris Johnson tells of 'dashboard warnings' over rise in cases -

Boris Johnson has said the UK's increasing number of coronavirus cases is "flashing at us like dashboard warnings in a passenger jet".

The Liverpool region will be on a "very high" Covid alert level from Wednesday, the highest of a new three-tier system.

England's chief medical officer said he was not confident the measures "would be enough to get on top of" the virus.

Prof Chris Whitty said it was likely local authorities in "very high" alert areas would have to go further.

But the prime minister ruled out the "extreme route" of a national lockdown "right now".

Most areas of England will be on "medium" alert, with measures such as the rule of six, but areas with local restrictions on household mixing are automatically on "high" alert.

A "very high" alert sees pubs and bars close if they do not serve "substantial meals", almost all household contacts banned and advice against travel.

Burnham is a prick, he changes his mind like the weather, the government can't win, he's just constantly angling for total lockdown in his area because they are ignoring distancing and asking for extra furlough and business funding so they can stay at home and close everything down.

Some results are preliminary and the results may change as further analysis is conducted," they said.

They add that "in all cases the data should be interpreted with other information" and not accepted as "a single grand truth".

So Drippy Drakeford takes this study as "A SINGLE GRAND TRUTH" when those responsible even say more analysis needs to be conducted and the study needs to be peer reviewed.

This tells you everything you need to know about Drakeford as a Political Operator as he has allowed himself to be backed into a corner by an issue of his own making. Drakeford is, in political terms, a Throttlebottom - an innocuously inept and futile person in public office.

Using a non peer reviewed study of sewer waste water as justification for this only proves many peoples view is that Wales is governed by the worst people. A.K.A a Kakistocracy.
