Covid-19: UK sees highest daily toll of 1,325 deaths -

A further 1,325 people have died in the UK within 28 days of a positive Covid test - the biggest figure reported in a single day since the pandemic began.

It means there have been just short of 80,000 deaths by that measure - as another 68,053 new cases were recorded.

Public Health England (PHE) said the number of deaths would "continue to rise until we stop the spread".

It comes as the government launches a new campaign in England urging people to "act like you've got" the virus.

The campaign, including an advert fronted by England's chief medical officer, Prof Chris Whitty, is intended to remind the public Covid is spreading fast, with large numbers showing no symptoms.

Covid: UK reports more than 80,000 deaths -

More than 80,000 people have died in the UK within 28 days of a positive Covid test since the start of the pandemic, official figures have shown.

A further 1,035 deaths in the UK were reported on Saturday, taking the total by that measure to 80,868.

The number of daily cases of people who tested positive for coronavirus increased by 59,937.

Only the US, Brazil, India and Mexico have recorded more Covid deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.

It is the fourth day in a row that the UK has reported more than 1,000 daily deaths.

It comes as scientists advising the government have warned that lockdown measures in England need to be stricter to achieve the same impact as the March shutdown.

Ministers have launched a new campaign urging people to act like they have the virus.

No sprint though dripford says
gethin when we are ready very patronising
shocking statments
from both
whats worse are the interviewers not pinning them down they just say ramping up in the next few days bla bla
Why have we started in last position
Large parts of wales are rural and its more difficult
What more rural than scotland and they have done 2.1 percent
Wales 1.6
Honestly
I don' t think dripford could run a bath.
They have only had since last march to put contingency plans in place
You could really shake the bloke
he could do with a seargent bawling in his ear to get him going.

Just watched a video of pm answering an mp, in response to being asked if Doris would make it public knowledge, that to date less than 400 people aged between 16 to 60 have died with this virus!!!! Wow,I thought the figure would have been far higher than that?? Of course Doris skirted around the question,as per usual :?

But it shows it is severely affecting the older generation a lot,lot harder than the rest of society, a fact that has been clearly obvious to those with their eyes wide open.the working age population could have returned to some kind of normality, regards getting back to work, kickstarting the economy? ?
As other posters have said for some time now, protect and shield the most at risk (until the majority have protection) and let the rest of the country get things moving along.of course the vulnerable need also to be protected as much as is needed. :old: :bluebird:

Covid: All over-50s in Wales to be offered jab by spring -

All over-50s and everyone who is at greater risk from Covid will be offered a vaccine by spring, under new Welsh Government plans.

A vaccine strategy unveiled by Health Minister Vaughan Gething aims to offer all adults a jab by the autumn.

It comes after criticism that the rollout of the vaccine has been slower than in other parts of the UK.

The latest figures show 86,039 doses had been administered by 22:00 GMT on Sunday.

A total of 327,000 doses - 280,000 of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and 47,000 doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab - have now been delivered to the Welsh NHS.

The figures mean 2.7% of Wales population has so far been vaccinated - compared to just over 4% in Northern Ireland, about 3.5% in England and 3% in Scotland.

Tesco, Asda and Waitrose ban shoppers without face masks -

Tesco, Asda and Waitrose have become the latest supermarkets to say they will deny entry to shoppers who do not wear face masks unless they are medically exempt.

It follows a similar move by Morrisons, while Sainsbury's says it will challenge those who flout the rules.

Retailers have been criticised for not doing enough to stop people breaking Covid rules as infections spread.

But enforcement of face coverings is officially a police responsibility.

However, supermarkets can deny entry to their premises which is private property, and can call the police if someone refuses to follow the rules or becomes abusive.

Covid: UK reports record 1,564 daily deaths - :(

A further 1,564 people have died in the UK within 28 days of a positive Covid test - the biggest figure reported in a single day since the pandemic began.

It brings the total number of deaths by that measure to 84,767.

Dr Yvonne Doyle, medical director at Public Health England, said there have now been more deaths in the second wave than the first.

And the prime minister warned there was a "very substantial" risk of intensive care capacity being "overtopped".

Speaking to the Commons Liaison Committee, Boris Johnson said the situation was "very, very tough" in the NHS and the strain on staff was "colossal".

He appealed to the public to follow lockdown rules, which require people in England to stay at home and only go out for limited reasons, such as for food shopping, exercise, or work if they cannot do so from home.

Similar measures are in place across much of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

A further 47,525 new cases have also been recorded.

Covid: Stricter supermarket rules 'to protect workers' due -

Stricter measures to "protect" supermarket workers during the coronavirus pandemic will be announced on Friday, Wales' first minister has said.

It comes after some workers said they faced abuse on a daily basis while challenging rule-breaking shoppers.

Mark Drakeford said abuse of shop workers was "completely unacceptable".

He said the Welsh Government could put into law measures which were currently only guidance.

Wales remains under a level four "stay at home" lockdown, meaning people are only allowed to leave home for essential reasons, including shopping for food.

But there have been growing concerns from shoppers and staff about safety in supermarkets and Mr Drakeford previously said one-way systems and number limits in stores appeared to have broken down.

Some workers have claimed they are seeing shoppers walking around without masks, not using hygiene measures and shopping in large groups.

Covid: UK to close all travel corridors from Monday -

The UK is to close all travel corridors from Monday morning to "protect against the risk of as yet unidentified new strains" of Covid, the PM has said.

Anyone flying into the country from overseas will have to show proof of a negative Covid test before setting off.

It comes as a ban on travellers from South America and Portugal came into force on Friday over concerns about a new variant identified in Brazil.

Boris Johnson said the new rules would be in place until at least 15 February.

A further 1,280 people with coronavirus have died in the UK within 28 days of a positive test, taking the total to 87,291.

The latest government figures on Friday also showed another 55,761 new cases had been reported - up from 48,682 the previous day.

Meanwhile, more than two million people around the world have now died with the virus since the pandemic began, according to figures from Johns Hopkins University.

A vacine does not stop you getting and spreading a virus

It helps you fight it and not become too sick

Everyone who has had the vacine can still catch it and be contagious

Cases will not drop purely with thevroleout of the vacine only deaths and hospital admissions will

If people would actually WAKE UP and just help get rid of this then we can all get every freedom back

I agree , but people are saying wake up to tell people not to listen to the government and ignore the rules as they are masking some unknown other reason to have a lockdown.

Its pathetic and the main reason we are in this Situation now

In response to your last line, the main reason we are in this position now is because WE, for some strange inexplicable reason, think WE can CONTROL a virus.......we cannot, that is a statement of fact.

My initial point was more aligned to the fact that excuse after excuse will be rolled out for a "valid reason" to curtail our freedom. I just wish you could see the dangerous path of lack of liberties that we are already on. These freedoms will never be given back, history proves this.

You heard it here first, but quite frankly it doesn't take a rocket scientist to look behind the veil, "the vaccine isn't working due to the new unfrorseen strains so we have to keep your freedoms curtailed"......please wake up you lovely people. :bluebird:

A vacine does not stop you getting and spreading a virus

It helps you fight it and not become too sick

Everyone who has had the vacine can still catch it and be contagious

Cases will not drop purely with thevroleout of the vacine only deaths and hospital admissions will

If people would actually WAKE UP and just help get rid of this then we can all get every freedom back

Yes, but that's what it's all about. Getting COVID and not needing hospitalization is a walk in the park compared to what we have now.

Its not fact its opinion

I wish you could see the dangerous path of ignoring this and letting it get out of hand

Who is getting the vaccine first?

Broadly, vaccines are being given to the most vulnerable first, as set out in a list of nine high-priority groups, covering around 25 million people in the UK.

They are thought to represent 90-99% of those at risk of dying from Covid-19.

Residents in care homes for older adults and their carers
80-year-olds and over and frontline health and social care workers
75-year-olds and over
70-year-olds and over and clinically extremely vulnerable individuals
65-year-olds and over
16- to 64-year-olds with serious underlying health conditions
60-year-olds and over
55-year-olds and over
50-year-olds and over
