No 10: Condition of PM has 'worsened'

The UK PM first tested positive for coronavirus 10 days ago, experiencing what his team called "mild symptoms".

However, earlier today, his spokesman said the symptoms had become "persistent", and he was admitted to St Thomas' Hospital on Sunday evening.

A statement from Downing Streets says: “Over the course of this afternoon, the condition of the prime minister has worsened and, on the advice of his medical team, he has been moved to the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital.

“The PM has asked Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, who is the First Secretary of State, to deputise for him where necessary.

“The PM is receiving excellent care, and thanks all NHS staff for their hard work and dedication."

New UK March figures include deaths outside hospital

Michelle Roberts

Health editor, BBC News online

The Office for National Statistics has released new figures from March on the number of deaths involving coronavirus. The data gives us the most accurate picture to date of where deaths are occurring.

Unlike the statistics we have heard about so far, these include every community death that week linked to Covid-19 in England and Wales.

According to the data, which spans seven days up to 27 March, 539 death certificates mentioned coronavirus disease - 4.8% of all deaths that week. That was a rise from just 1% of deaths the week before.

The figures seem much smaller than the current total number of deaths for the UK – which stand at 5,373 – because most of the deaths from coronavirus have occurred in the last 10 days as the pandemic picked up pace.

The vast majority of coronavirus deaths are happening in hospitals – 501 of the 539 deaths analysed here – but some are occurring in hospices and care homes too, according to the ONS.

UK Cabinet Office minister Michael Gove is self-isolating at home, because a family member is showing symptoms of coronavirus.

"Gove is a central player in coordination - this will make things that bit harder."

Analysis: Growth in new UK cases could be stalling

Robert Cuffe

BBC head of statistics

Today’s figures are a record high and bring the currently reported death toll above 6,000 for the first time.

Today's 786 is higher than Saturday’s previous peak of 708 deaths reported in a single day.

We also know that this figure misses deaths that occurred but have not yet been reported, so the true death toll at this point is likely higher.

If there is any silver lining to these grim figures, it is that they represent the fourth day in a row of below-trend growth.

For weeks up until Friday’s figures, the number of deaths had been doubling every three-and-a-half days.

Had that trend continued, we would have seen close to 1,400 deaths today.

So 786 is better than that – although it’s still too soon to know what’s causing it.

It could be a big bottleneck in reporting (we’ve seen that after previous weekends) or genuine evidence that growth is truly slowing down.

A school hub in Cardiff has had a case of coronavirus in one of the pupils attending, Cardiff council has said.

The pupil had been attending the Llanishen Fach hub in Rhiwbina, a message sent to parents in the hub area said.

The pupil developed symptoms last Thursday and was self-isolating before being tested for Covid-19 on Monday.

There were no indications any other staff or pupils at the hub had developed symptoms and the school has had a "robust" cleaning regime in place every day, the council said.

“We are definitely extending the lockdown – it will not be raised next week.”

We reported earlier that 70 more people died in Scotland over the past day, in the highest daily rise there so far.

An important week ahead

Jonathan Blake

BBC political correspondent

The main news from the chancellor was the encouraging update on the prime minister’s health.

It goes without saying that to hear Boris Johnson is sitting up in bed and engaging with his medical team will come as a big relief.

The money announced for charities is significant too, but already Labour and others are warning it won’t go far enough.

Mr Sunak offered a stark reminder that coronavirus would have “a very significant impact” on the economy and that it was “simply not possible” to save every job, business and charity.

On the lockdown measures being reviewed, he said there would be a meeting tomorrow involving devolved governments to discuss the approach.

A hint perhaps that the Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford may have jumped the gun in confirming restrictions would stay in place beyond next week.

There was no sense from the chancellor that restrictions will be eased, however, with him saying the unequivocal advice remained for people to stay at home.

There was a reminder too of how important the coming days are from the Ministry of Defence's chief scientific adviser Angela McLean.

She said it was “a really important week… we're all watching what happens”.
