Lockdown to last 'several more weeks' says Gething

The lockdown due to coronavirus will remain in place for "several more weeks at the very least", the Welsh health minister has said.

Vaughan Gething told the BBC "we need to give a much clearer message that this isn't going to end anytime soon".

First Minister Mark Drakeford confirmed on Wednesday that the measures in Wales will be extended into next week.

But Chancellor Rishi Sunak declined to say whether UK ministers will extend the coronavirus lockdown in England at a briefing yesterday.

The devolved governments and UK ministers will discuss the issue later on Thursday.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Mr Gething said: "We haven't put a definite period of the end of lockdown because we do want to have a conversation with all four nations about the emerging scientific evidence and advice, on how far the measures we've taken so far have made an impact on flattening the curve on reducing the admission to our health service, and indeed on saving lives.

"I actually think the honest truth is we'll review lockdown.

"We may agree review periods for lockdown, but we need to give a much clearer message that this isn't going to end anytime soon.

"We're in for several more weeks at the very least."

What did we learn from today's UK press conference?

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance, and chief medical officer Chris Whitty have finished the press conference. Here's what they told us:

We should not expect any decision on changing the lockdown restrictions until the end of next week

Social distancing is working, with the numbers of new cases much lower than they would otherwise be. The number of people in intensive care is also not rising exponentially. The death toll will continue to rise for about two weeks after intensive care admissions stabilise, as deaths lag behind admissions

Mr Raab has not spoken to Prime Minister Boris Johnson since he was taken to hospital on Sunday

The government is planning to formally recognise the work of frontline workers but does not yet have specific plans for how it will do so

After the last two briefings I do not want to jinx us as a nation , but we are better placed than most.Loved ones have passed on in this crisis and it should make us address what is actually important in life.Perhaps we as a society will value those who the least thought of, worst paid and generally treated badly by their employers. It is incumbent on us all to reflect how society should be rather than the age old mores of success, money, material things and worst of all divisive political divisions! I hope Boris when he pulls through, with the aid of our jewel in the crown aka the NHS, will look to those who have risked their lives just like battlefield soldiers...no difference !! Sitting at home is no hardship when placed against what many have to face on a daily basis.

Vaccine could be ready by autumn, claims Oxford professor

A coronavirus vaccine could be available for the general public by September, an Oxford professor has claimed.

Sarah Gilbert, a professor of vaccinology at Oxford University, is leading a team of researchers in the development of a vaccine that would protect the world against coronavirus.

In an interview with The Times, the professor said she and her team have already created a potential vaccine that is due to begin human trials within two weeks.

She told the paper she was "80%" confident of its success "based on other things that we have done with this type of vaccine". Most industry experts say that a vaccine could take as long as 18 months to be developed and distributed globally.

UK Parliament to return on 21 April

The UK's Parliament will re-open for business as planned on 21 April, the leader of the House of Commons has confirmed.

MPs at Westminster have been on an extended Easter recess since 26 March, amid concerns about the spread of coronavirus.

Officials are working to set-up a "virtual Parliament" to allow MPs to hold debates and question ministers remotely, with further details to emerge next week.

In a statement, House of Commons leader Jacob Rees-Mogg said: "Parliament will return on 21 April to fulfil its essential constitutional functions of conducting scrutiny, authorising spending and making laws.

“In these unprecedented times, technological solutions have already been implemented for select committees, and options are being prepared for the Speaker, the government and other parties to consider next week.

“It is important that we have a comprehensive solution that does not inadvertently exclude any members."
