110 more virus deaths in Wales brings total to 751

Another 110 people in Wales have died with coronavirus - taking the total number to 751, Public Health Wales (PHW) has said.

The sudden increase in numbers is due to a delay in the reporting process and includes 84 retrospective deaths which occurred between 20 March and 22 April in one health board area, PHW said.

The new figures also showed 243 confirmed new cases since the last count, taking the total to 8,601.

The true number of cases is likely to be higher as many people with symptoms are not tested.

Further 587 coronavirus deaths in England

A further 587 patients with coronavirus have died in England, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in English hospitals to 17,373, the National Health Service (NHS) said.

The patients were aged between 40 and 102 years old, 34 of whom had no known underlying health conditions.

Figures for the number of UK-wide deaths will be released by the Department of Health later today.

64 more deaths from coronavirus in Scottish hospitals

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon confirms 9,697 people have tested positive for coronavirus in Scotland, up 288 on yesterday.

A further 64 patients have died in hospital, taking the total under that measurement to 1,184 in Scotland.

1,710 patients are in hospital with suspected or confirmed Covid-19, a decrease of 38, with 141 being treated in intensive care, a decrease of seven.

Exercise restrictions are being tightened in Wales to cut down on unnecessary travel.

From Saturday (Today), people must exercise "as close as possible" to home, according to the updated lockdown rules.

Cyclists are being told they should travel no farther than a "reasonable walking distance from home".

The new rules state people should not drive to exercise unless absolutely necessary.

Here is a summary of what they say.

Why are new regulations being brought in?
The Welsh Government says: "The fundamental principle is that people should stay home as much as possible".

What do the new rules on exercise say?
That it should be taken "as close as possible to the home".

How often can you exercise?
Once a day. The time limit is not spelled out, but the rules say four or five hours is out of the question. You must not meet up with friends and must stay two metres apart from other people.

Does this apply to everyone?
Some people with health or mobility issues may not be able to exercise directly outside their homes. They may drive to the nearest convenient spot.

Those with conditions or disabilities, such as autism or dementia, can exercise more than once a day.

Can you exercise with other people?
It should be alone, or with people from your household, or with carers if necessary.

Where can you exercise?
Busy places like parks should be avoided.

What exercise is allowed?
It should usually be only walking, running and cycling. Risky exercise is ruled out.
You should not drive away from home to exercise, with no journeys "of any significant distance".

Are you allowed to have a picnic?
Picnics are banned. So is sitting for a "prolonged period" on benches.

Can you do anything else when out exercising?
You can, for instance, walk the dog or buy food. These are considered acceptable reasons to be out.

How far are you allowed to cycle?
A "reasonable walking distance from home". This is not spelled out exactly, but the rules say an accident a long way from home could put more pressure on the NHS.

Can you cycle to work?
Only if going to work is justified.

What other rules must cyclists follow?
They must cycle alone, or with people from their home. They must stick to routes they know and take care of walkers, runners or other cyclists.

They must stay two metres apart and stop to let people go by.

UK coronavirus death toll soars past 20,000 as 781 more die in hospitals

The latest figure shows the number of people known to have died in hospitals, with the real number feared to be far higher. Just weeks ago officials were optimistic that the death toll could be kept below 20,000

The UK's coronavirus death toll in hospitals has passed 20,000 after a rise of 781.

The latest figures from England, Wales and Scotland bring the number of lives lost to the disease to 20,287.

A further 235 occurred since the start of the month, while 69 were in March.

A further 23 people have died after testing positive for coronavirus in Wales, taking the total number of deaths there to 774.

There were 47 deaths in Scotland.

Yesterday the UK's death toll stood at 19,506.

The tragic figure comes less than a month after NHS England medical director Stephen Powis said he was optimistic deaths could be kept below 20,000.

'Up to 10% of UK population may have been infected'

Oxford University's Prof Christophe Fraser told the BBC's Andrew Marr between three and 10% of the population was predicted to have contracted coronavirus by this stage - up to six million people.

Prof Fraser is working on developing an app which would allow for tracing people who had been in touch with those with Covid-19.

Prof Fraser said the app helps deal with the problem of 50% of infections occurring before syptoms are showing.

He said with the software, people could be alerted if they had come into contact with a person with symptoms, in which case they should observe stronger social-distancing, or a confirmed case which would mean going into isolation.

The Covid-19 death toll in England, Wales and Scotland has risen by 350 in the past 24 hours - with no end of the lockdown in sight.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson told Brits that the strict measures will continue - as he "will not throw away" the sacrifices made to prevent the disease spreading.

Likening the killer virus to a mugger, Mr Johnson, making his first speech since returning to work after his own Covid-19 battle, said the country is at the time of "maximum risk".

He said the UK is beginning to turn the tide, but continued: "I refuse to throw away all the sacrifice and risk a second peak."

His comments came as NHS England confirmed 329 additional deaths, while there were 13 more in Scotland, and an additional eight in Wales.

I think the covid numbers are dubious everywhere … and tbh yes lots of shortcomings if you look at us in isolation... but PPE was a huge problem for every country and we didn't crash our NHS capacity which quite a few did...so maybe they could have done better but could have also done much worse...

I think the most worrying information that's now coming out is that the government ignored (or decided not to accept) the medical advice given last year that they should be stockpiling PPE for a pandemic (COVID-19 or otherwise). It appears to be simple penny pinching in NHS funding as many accused this government of previously.

I don't like him personally but I do think Boris has provided some good leadership through this. However, some of the decision making prior to and during this pandemic from his government will need careful scrutiny as this eases and there will be consequences for some of the failings uncovered.

Coronavirus: UK failed to stockpile crucial PPE

The government failed to buy crucial protective equipment to cope with a pandemic, a BBC investigation has found.

There were no gowns, visors, swabs or body bags in the government's pandemic stockpile when Covid-19 reached the UK.

NHS staff say they are being put at risk because of the shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE).

The government said it has taken the right steps and is doing everything it can to increase stocks.

The investigation by BBC Panorama found that vital items were left out of the stockpile when it was set up in 2009 and that the government subsequently ignored a warning from its own advisers to buy missing equipment.

The expert committee that advises the government on pandemics, the New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group (Nervtag), recommended the purchase of gowns last June.

Gowns are currently one of the items in shortest supply in the UK and they are now difficult to source because of the global shortage of PPE.

Doctors and nurses have complained that there are also shortages of the life-saving FFP3 respirator masks.

Panorama has discovered that millions of FFP3 respirator masks are unaccounted for.

There were 33 million on the original 2009 procurement list for the stockpile, but only 12 million have been handed out.

The government refuses to explain where the other masks have gone.

A government spokesperson said there was "limited demand" for the masks coming through the Supply Disruption Line, "which is one reason why they haven't all been distributed".

They added that gowns were a recent recommendation from the advisory group and would be procured for the "future stockpile build up alongside all other necessary equipment".
