PANDEMIC - WHERE ARE WE

Wed Apr 01, 2020 10:41 am

Nobody can tell the final outcome, the UK are hoping to keep deaths below 20-30,000, but here's some figures from the past:-

2005-12 HIV Pandemic - 36Mil
1968 Hong Kong Flu - 3Mil
1957 Asian Flu - 2Mil
1919 Spanish Flu - 30-50Mil

Plus many recent years of bad outbreaks claiming additional tens of thousand of lives just in UK.

Every death is a tragedy, but with all the measures taken hopefully this virus will be a fraction of these others.

Yes but these figures are worldwide, you cannot compare them with the uk on its own!

Impossible to get UK deaths for all these pandemics but as a guide world wide, we are at 40,000 today, so a very long way away from some of these other pandemics (thank God)

estimates of UK deaths range between 250,000 and 500,000. difficult to come up with accurate figures as the outbreak coincided with the end of the war with thousands of servicemen still abroad .

'Near exponential growth' in cases worries WHO chief

World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has said he is "deeply concerned about the rapid escalation and global spread" of the coronavirus infection.

Addressing a daily news briefing, he said that in the past five weeks there had been a "near exponential growth" in the number of new cases while the number of deaths had more than doubled in the past week.

The world is set to reach one million confirmed cases and 50,000 deaths worldwide in the next few days, he added.

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University say 887,067 people around the world have become infected and 44,264 have died.

Knackered without an effective treatment or vaccine. I dread to thing how many would die before we get towards herd immunity. That's of course unless we find out in the near future that a huge number have had it without realising. That seems to be the main short term hope.

The amount of deaths can be quantified quite accurately.

The amount of people who have been infected can never be accurately estimated whilst so few people have been tested.

There appear to be no figures for those who may have had the virus without realising they have had it so apart from the figures for actual deaths everything else is just guesswork.
