Number listed as 'cured' quietly drops in Wuhan
Kerry Allen

BBC Monitoring, Chinese Media Analyst

The latest statistics from China’s National Health Commission indicate that hundreds of people were wrongly listed as cured/discharged in the central Chinese city of Wuhan.

The number of people cured there was reported as 47,300 on Friday, but that figure has quietly dropped today - down to 46,359.

The number of people cured in China at a nationwide level has dropped in line with this. On Friday, 77,944 people were reported as having been cured of Covid-19. But today, that figure has fallen to 77,084.

On Friday, the Wuhan municipal government revised its number of confirmed cases and deaths, to say an extra 1,290 people had died. It said the delays for releasing this information were due to some patients dying at home, being treated in hospitals that didn’t pass their information to the central network, or because of reported errors.

But the National Health Commission’s official figures seem to suggest that as many as 941 cases of Covid-19 in the central city may have been incorrectly reported as cured over the last three months.

I just searched for 'medical experts praise China for handing over research and other vital data so quickly', but no relevant articles etc from yesterday or previously. Furthermore, if the PRC hadn't lied about the virus in December, 95% of cases and deaths wouldn't have happened around the world. The research and data should have handed to the WHO in December as required by the International Health Regulations.

The International Health Regulations require that states monitor and share all information regarding “clinical descriptions, laboratory results, sources and type of risk, numbers of human cases and deaths, conditions affecting the spread of the disease, and the health measures employed” with respect to potential outbreaks.

' A University of Southampton study has previously found that — should strict quarantine measures have been introduced three weeks earlier — the disease’s spread would have been reduced by some 95%.'

I thought that this discussion was about the PRC and their lying about the Coronavirus, yet you adopt the typical left wing defence and change the subject. This is the point where when talking face to face, those on the left usually raise their voices and interrupt answers with more questions. Anyway, my answers on the new subjects are below :-

We know that SARS, Swine Flu and Bird Flu originated in China and that Spanish flu has research suggesting that it also originated in China. China is a country with a huge population, with many exposed to the animals from which a lot of these viruses start.

'One of the few regions of the world seemingly less affected by the 1918 flu pandemic was China, where there may have been a comparatively mild flu season in 1918 (although this is disputed due to lack of data during the Warlord Period of China, see Around the globe). Multiple studies have documented that there were relatively few deaths from the flu in China compared to other regions of the world.[26][27][28] This has led to speculation that the 1918 flu pandemic originated in China.[29][27][30][31] The relatively mild flu season and lower rates of flu mortality in China in 1918 may be explained due to the fact that the Chinese population had already possessed acquired immunity to the flu virus.[32][29][27]

In 1993, Claude Hannoun, the leading expert on the 1918 flu for the Pasteur Institute, asserted the former virus was likely to have come from China. It then mutated in the United States near Boston and from there spread to Brest, France, Europe's battlefields, Europe, and the world with Allied soldiers and sailors as the main disseminators.[33]

In 2014, historian Mark Humphries argued that the mobilization of 96,000 Chinese laborers to work behind the British and French lines might have been the source of the pandemic. Humphries, of the Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John's, based his conclusions on newly unearthed records. He found archival evidence that a respiratory illness that struck northern China in November 1917 was identified a year later by Chinese health officials as identical to the Spanish flu.'

The 2008 crash did start in the US, but the crash did the most damage in the US and is arguably as much to do with global banking than US business practice and legislation. The PRC is also a member of the G20 and the IMF and both organisations are just as complicit in the 2008 crash.

The initial G20 agenda, as conceived by US, Canadian and German policy makers, was very much focused on the sustainability of sovereign debt and global financial stability,

Faulty Chinese medical equipment hampers Spanish Covid-19 battle

Spain is counting the cost of faulty medical equipment purchased from Chinese companies, including face masks and Covid-19 rapid test kits, as the country battles against Europe’s largest coronavirus crisis with more than 200,000 confirmed cases.

Spain’s health authorities have been forced to withdraw hundreds of thousands of badly made face masks from hospitals and care homes around the country, after a batch of 900,000 masks were found not to offer adequate protection for professional use.

The batch of masks, supplied by a Chinese company called Garry Galaxy, was distributed to regional health authorities during the Easter week. In the region of Murcia alone, more than 1,000 health workers have been placed under quarantine as a precaution after using the masks.

According to the government, 31,000 health workers in Spain have tested positive for Covid-19 amid widespread criticism of a lack of protective equipment. The country’s supreme court ordered the health ministry on Monday to “take every step in its power […] for a better distribution of protective equipment to health workers.

Missouri sues China for 'sinister campaign of malfeasance and deception'

Anthony Zurcher

BBC North America reporter

The US state of Missouri is suing China, the Chinese Communist Party, and other government officials over what it calls a "sinister campaign of malfeasance and deception" which, it claims, led to the global Covid-19 pandemic.

In a court filing on Tuesday, Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt argued that China's early actions led to an "unnecessary and preventable" outbreak.

The federal lawsuit seeks damages for "the enormous loss of life, human suffering, and economic turmoil" that has occurred in the state.

A spokesman for the attorney general's office called the move "historical".

But the lawsuit will face significant legal and procedural obstacles.

US law, for instance, gives foreign governments sweeping immunity from such actions.

Missouri may be less concerned with securing monetary damages, however, than with scoring political points and pinning blame on China for the devastating health and economic consequences of the pandemic.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has criticised the Chinese government and the World Health Organization (WHO) over the handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.

"We strongly believe the Chinese Communist Party did not report the outbreak of the new coronavirus in a timely fashion to the World Health Organization," Pompeo told reporters.

Pompeo said there were very clear expectations about nations needing to "disclose data to protect global health".

He said China did not share all the information it had and instead "covered up how dangerous the disease is" and "censored those who tried to warn the world".

"The WHO's regulatory arm clearly failed during this pandemic," he added.

"Transparency and getting it right is critical to saving lives."

The US administration has said it will withdraw funding from the WHO, but officials at Mr Pompeo's briefing said it would not take back money that had already been given to the WHO.

Arrogance will 'poison' cooperation - Chinese ambassador

China's ambassador to the UK says coronavirus "does not discriminate between races" and "blaming and scapegoating is futile" in the face of the current crisis.

Last month, US President Donald Trump was criticised for describing Covid-19 as the "Chinese virus".

Speaking at a news conference in London, Liu Xiaoming says: "Arrogance and insolence will only poison the cooperation between countries.

"It is against the human conscience to deliberately put various labels on a specific regime, and stigmatise a specific country.

"Such a move will only drive a wedge between countries, undermine international cooperation and harm the interests of all mankind."

China rejects calls for virus investigation

James Landale

Diplomatic correspondent

China has rejected calls for an independent international investigation into the origin of the coronavirus.

Chen Wen, China’s deputy ambassador to London, told the BBC such an inquiry was a “politically motivated initiative” that would divert attention away from fighting the pandemic.

There's been growing scepticism about how transparent China has been in its handling of Covid-19, fuelling calls for an impartial inquiry.

Chen said: “The independent inquiry is politically motivated. We are fighting the virus at the moment, we are concentrating all our efforts on fighting against the virus. Why talk about an investigation into this?

"This will divert not only attention, it will divert resources."

The diplomat suggested criticism of the country’s initial response to the virus outbreak amounted to “finger pointing” and “deep-seated bias” against China.

Chen also claimed that speculation about the origin of Covid-19 was a “political virus”.

The Chinese city of Wuhan, where the virus was first reported, has no remaining cases in its hospitals, according to officials.

Mi Feng, spokesperson for the National Health Commission, told reporters the last patient in a serious condition was "cured" on Friday.

They also confirmed that there are no new cases of the virus in the city.

Since the outbreak began in December, China has reported 82, 816 cases and 4,632 deaths.

Wuhan reported 46,452 cases, 56% of the total.

Gyms fall quiet as China battles second coronavirus wave

Barely weeks after re-opening, Beijing’s health clubs have been ordered to close following a spike in coronavirus infections.

Just when China thought it had got over the worst of the outbreak that first emerged in the city of Wuhan, it is now dealing with a dreaded second wave.

But while it initially exported the virus around the globe, the country is today having to stem the spread of new imported cases.

The authorities are having to re-impose strict quarantine periods on people returning from overseas in an attempt to prevent a renewed spike in the disease which has killed more than 4,600 of its citizens.

That has forced gyms, health clubs and swimming pools to shut up shop for the foreseeable future, with devastating consequences for the industry.

All the evidence suggests that China is an untrustworthy partner

Nick Timothy believes the West can't let Beijing carry on manipulating institutions and countries for its own nefarious ends. Read the full piece here.

If the definition of madness is doing the same thing over and over again while expecting a different outcome, the West’s policy towards China has for many years been insane.

Yet hope that Covid-19 might prove a catalyst for change seems optimistic. Last week, leaked EU papers showed that Brussels had watered down its report into China’s misinformation campaign about the contagion. China is once again buying Western complicity in its nefarious actions.

Recall Beijing’s actions since the pandemic began. In January, when doctors in Wuhan discovered there was human-to-human transmission of Covid-19, Beijing silenced them, and lied to the world about the dangers of the new virus. It refused to engage with the World Health Organisation, leaving other countries to guess the nature of the threat. And it failed to take action against its notorious wet markets.

China denies spreading disinformation

China’s foreign ministry has denied claims that the country is spreading disinformation about the coronavirus.

A European Union report said last week there was “significant evidence” of covert Chinese operations on social media.

National security officials in the UK and the United States believe China is continuing to under-report the true number of deaths from Covid-19.

China's foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang defended Beijing's response in Monday's regular press briefing.

"I must stress China is against the creation and spreading of disinformation by any individual or institution. China is a victim rather than a source of disinformation,"

China under scrutiny after arresting activists

Human Rights Watch has called on China to release two activists who were arrested after contributing to a website that archived coronavirus information censored by the government.

Chen Mei and Cai Wei reportedly contributed to a website called Terminus 2049, where users could share reports and social media posts removed by government censors. They were detained along with Mr Cai's girlfriend, the Reuters news agency reported.

“The lack of free flow of information about Covid-19 in China has contributed to a global pandemic,” said Human Rights Watch researcher Yaqiu Wang. “Governments around the world should press Beijing to release the wrongfully detained activists and citizen journalists immediately.”

Several journalists and activists have gone missing in China since the outbreak began. Last week, a Chinese journalist detained in Wuhan reappeared after being missing for two months. Two others have not been heard from since the beginning of this year.

Chinese embassy accuses Australia of petty tricks

Chinese state media has fiercely rounded on Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, with an Australian studies scholar writing in the Global Times tabloid today that Australia was "spearheading" a "malicious campaign to frame and incriminate China".

And Hu Xijin, the editor-in-chief of the paper, which is affiliated to the Beijing-controlled People's Daily newspaper, said on Chinese social media that Australia was always making trouble: "It is a bit like chewing gum stuck on the sole of China’s shoes. Sometimes you have to find a stone to rub it off."

China has accused Australia of "petty tricks" in an intensifying dispute over Canberra's push for an international inquiry into the coronavirus outbreak that could affect diplomatic and economic ties between the countries.

British ambassador calls for investigation into origins of Covid-19 in Wuhan

Just in from Washington Correspondent, Rozina Sabur:

Dame Karen Pierce, Britain's new ambassador to Washington, said the UK government would welcome an investigation into the origins of Covid-19.

Ms Pierce also pointed to the "public health risks" of the wet markets in operation in China, like the one in Wuhan where the novel coronavirus outbreak is thought to have emerged.

“I think there definitely needs to be some sort of review or investigation," Ms Pierce told the Washington Post during a video Q&A. "This is the third virus, I think, to come out of China before the century is a quarter old".

China has rejected calls for an independent international investigation into the origin of the coronavirus, calling such demands politically motivated.

The UK government, along with others in Europe, have so far been wary of provoking a diplomatic row with China over the issue. However in the US, Donald Trump has repeatedly attacked Beijing over its handling of the outbreak and frequently refers to Covid-19 as "the Chinese virus".

Some US states have also begun legal action against the Chinese government, accusing it of not doing enough to stop the spread of the virus. Ms Pierce also said the World Health Organization's (WHO) response to the global pandemic needed to be examined.

"I think it's certainly the British Government's position that we do need some reforms in WHO and looking at the international world health regulations," she said. "However, at the moment the most important thing is to cooperate on tackling the pandemic and get on top of the virus. "

Donald Trump renewed his fierce criticism of China and the World Health Organization during a press conference last night.

He said he believes that China's handling of the coronavirus pandemic is proof that Beijing "will do anything they can" to make him lose his re-election bid in November.

And he added that the WHO “misled” America over the true scale of the coronavirus outbreak in China.

“We’re not happy about it,” Trump said of the WHO’s response to Covid-19, adding that “they must have known more” than was publicly revealed.

Coronavirus: US intelligence debunks theory it was 'manmade'
The US intelligence community has determined Covid-19 "was not manmade or genetically modified", though it is still investigating the virus' origins.

The National Intelligence chief's office said agencies are looking into whether the outbreak began from animal contact or a laboratory accident.

President Donald Trump later suggested he had seen evidence the virus came out of a Chinese laboratory.

China has rejected the theory and criticised the US response to Covid-19.

What did the intelligence chief say?
The Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which oversees US spy agencies, said on Thursday it concurs with the "wide scientific consensus" regarding Covid-19's natural origins.

"The [intelligence community] will continue to rigorously examine emerging information and intelligence to determine whether the outbreak began through contact with infected animals or if it was the result of an accident at a laboratory in Wuhan."

The virus was first detected in Wuhan, China. There are now over 3.2 million cases worldwide and more than 231,000 deaths.

Thursday's statement is the first clear response from US agencies debunking conspiracy theories - both from the US and China - about the virus as a purported bioweapon.

The idea that the coronavirus could have inadvertently leaked from a laboratory has not yet been disproven.

Is there any evidence for coronavirus lab release idea?
China and the US trade coronavirus conspiracy theories
What did President Trump say?
Taking questions at the White House on Thursday, Mr Trump stoked this theory.

He was asked by a reporter: "Have you seen anything at this point that gives you a high degree of confidence that the Wuhan Institute of Virology was the origin of this virus?"

The president replied: "Yes, I have. Yes, I have. And I think the World Health Organization should be ashamed of themselves because they're like the public relations agency for China."

He added: "Whether they [China] made a mistake, or whether it started off as a mistake and then they made another one, or did somebody do something on purpose?

"I don't understand how traffic, how people weren't allowed into the rest of China, but they were allowed into the rest of the world. That's a bad, that's a hard question for them to answer."

The New York Times reported on Thursday that senior White House officials have asked the US intelligence community to investigate whether the virus came from a Wuhan research laboratory.

Intelligence agencies have also been tasked with determining if China and the WHO withheld information about the virus early on, unnamed officials told NBC News on Wednesday.

What's the background?
Mr Trump has recently been escalating his war of words with China over the pandemic after what officials within the US president's administration had described as a truce with Beijing.

On Wednesday, he suggested China wanted him to lose his re-election bid in November.

Mr Trump has often blamed China at briefings, accusing its officials of covering up the virus early on and saying they could have stopped the disease from spreading.

He has similarly criticised the WHO and withdrawn US funding for the global body.

China's Foreign Ministry, meanwhile, has accused the Trump administration of trying to distract from its own problems tackling the crisis.

A ministry spokesman has also repeatedly promoted the idea - without evidence - that Covid-19 might have originated in the US.

According to the Washington Post, the Trump administration is looking into ways to punish China financially. Discussions reportedly include allowing the US government to sue China for damages or cancelling debt obligations.

The US-China propaganda war
This is the first definitive statement on the matter from US intelligence agencies. It rejects the most extreme of the conspiracy theories about the pandemic's origins - that the Chinese developed and un-leashed the coronavirus as a bioweapon.

But it doesn't rule out the possibility that the virus was accidentally leaked from a Wuhan laboratory studying infectious diseases.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in particular has talked up that scenario, urging China to let outside experts into the facility, and raising questions about lab safety in other parts of the country. The Chinese government says any such allegations are unfounded and fabricated out of nothing.

Claims and counterclaims about the origins of the virus are part of a propaganda war over China's handling of the coronavirus crisis.

But they also reflect US frustration with the Chinese for not sharing more data about how the pandemic developed.

Top US diplomat again says China to blame

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has blamed China for the severity of the coronavirus outbreak, telling ABC News that the country “had the opportunity to prevent all of the calamity that has befallen the world” but tried to “conceal and hide and confuse” information.

The Trump administration has in recent weeks increasingly pointed the finger at China, in what BBC correspondent Barbara Plett Usher wrote recently was a co-ordinated effort to reframe Trump's handling of the pandemic ahead of November's election.

When asked about an unproven theory that the virus was manmade - a notion President Donald Trump has also repeatedly suggested - Pompeo said he did not disbelieve the theory, claiming “the best experts so far seem to think it was manmade”.

But last week, the US intelligence community stated that it agreed with a scientific consensus that the virus was not manmade or modified.

When asked about that assessment live on the show, Pompeo reversed course, saying he agreed with the intelligence analysis and had “no reason to doubt” its accuracy.

The secretary later said he couldn’t answer whether the virus was intentionally or accidentally released as “the Chinese Communist Party has refused to cooperate with world health experts”.

We will probably never find out whether the virus was man-made, or whether it was accidentally released. IMHO those questions are irrelevant, as we know the virus didn't spread to other parts of China, but did spread around the world. Therefore, while lying about a HTH transmissible virus, the PRC locked down Wuhan, but allowed it to spread to other countries. Whether this was deliberate or to do with 'Saving Face' is immaterial, as the consequences are the same. I will be avoiding Chinese products whenever possible in future.

Chinese state media have accused US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo of lying, after he said there was "enormous evidence" the coronavirus emanated from a laboratory in Wuhan

A patient in France had coronavirus on 27 December, a recent testing of a swab taken at the time has shown. That would mean coronavirus came to Europe almost a month earlier than previously thought

China will not invite international experts to investigate the source of Covid-19 until after securing the "final victory" against the virus

More time to get a story together !!

EU in flap over Chinese censorship

Katya Adler

Europe Editor

The EU has criticised its ambassador to Beijing, after he allowed China to censor an open letter calling for closer co-operation during the pandemic.

Officials in Brussels said Nicolas Chapuis made the wrong decision when he allowed a line - which said the coronavirus had originated in China - to be cut from the letter.

The document, published in the China Daily, had been signed by ambassadors from all EU states. But not all of them were informed of the change.

The EU has sniffed an opportunity in tensions between China and the US over trade and more recently the pandemic. Brussels hopes to boost its trade ties with China and work together to fight climate change.

The incident is all the more awkward for Brussels following allegations that the EU’s foreign policy arm watered down language on China in a recent report on disinformation campaigns during the pandemic.

Chinese official admits health system weaknesses

The coronavirus pandemic is a "big test" that has exposed weaknesses in China's public health system, a senior official has told Chinese media.

The rare admission, from Director of China's National Health Commission Li Bin, comes after sustained criticism abroad of China's early response.

The country will now improve its disease prevention, public health system and data collection, he says.

China has offered to help North Korea fight the outbreak there.

Li told journalists the pandemic was a significant challenge for China's governance, and that it has exposed "the weak links in how we address major epidemic and the public health system".

China has been accused of ignoring early signs of the virus in Wuhan, where the outbreak began, and failing to alert the international community quickly.

China has rejected calls for an independent international investigation into the origins of the virus.
