Wuhan reports first new case in weeks

Wuhan, the Chinese city where the coronavirus outbreak started, has reported its first new case of Covid-19 for more than a month.

The case is one of 14 new infections reported by China’s National Health Commission. The patient, a 89-year-old man, is in critical condition and had previously been asymptomatic before testing positive, local media reported.

The man's local residential community has been put under tight restrictions following the diagnosis, according to the reports.

China has reported a total of 82,901 cases and 4,633 deaths from Covid-19. Tight lockdown restrictions appear to have brought the spread under control.

China's Wuhan plans city-wide testing for coronavirus over period of 10 days

The Chinese city of Wuhan, the epicentre of China's coronavirus outbreak, plans to conduct city-wide nucleic acid testing over a period of 10 days, according to an internal document seen by Reuters and two sources familiar with the situation.

Every district in the city has been told to submit a detailed testing plan by Tuesday for their respective area, the document showed.

The Wuhan health authority could not be immediately reached for comment outside of business hours.

The city of 11 million people reported its first cluster of new infections over the weekend, after a months-long lockdown was lifted on April 8.

US says China trying to steal vaccine research

US authorities warned Wednesday that Chinese hackers were attempting to steal coronavirus data on treatments and vaccines, adding fuel to Washington's war with Beijing over the pandemic.

The FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) said organizations researching Covid-19 were at risk of "targeting and network compromise by the People's Republic of China."

They warned that Chinese government-affiliated cyber actors and others were attempting to obtain "valuable intellectual property and public health data related to vaccines, treatments, and testing from networks and personnel affiliated with Covid-19-related research."

"China's efforts to target these sectors pose a significant threat to our nation's response to Covid-19," they said.

The two organizations gave no evidence or examples to support the allegation.

Trump mulls 'cutting off' ties with China

US President Donald Trump has again condemned China's handling of the coronavirus outbreak, threatening to end relations with Beijing.

"There are many things we could do. We could cut off the whole relationship," Trump said in Thursday's interview with Fox Business.

"Now, if you did, what would happen?" asked Trump rhetorically. "You’d save $500bn (£409bn) if you cut off the whole relationship."

It was an apparent reference to a huge US deficit in bilateral trade with China.

Washington has for some time been considering pressing China for virus-related compensation, accusing it of initially withholding information about the outbreak.

China has repeatedly denied the accusations.

Trump's anti-China rhetoric is seen by many as part of his re-election strategy for November's presidential vote.

Former UK minister questions China's handling of virus

A number of Western officials have criticised China's handling of the coronavirus crisis, accusing the country of not being transparent enough at the beggining of the outbreak or of trying to cover up the true extent of the cases - accusations the Chinese government has consistently denied.

Add one more name to the list. Former UK International Trade Secretary Liam Fox has called on China to be more transparent and share data about the coronavirus with the World Health Organization (WHO).

"If we don't get these answers it will only increase the sense that China doesn't want to be a member of the family of nations," he told Sky News' Sophy Ridge programme.

He also pointed to scientific research that suggests the number of cases could have been reduced if China had acted earlier.

Last month, our security correspondent Gordon Corera reported that intelligence officials in the UK and the US believed that China's real casualty figure from the virus was much higher.

China: Covid-19 investigation still premature

Ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping's speech at the World Health Assembly later, the country's foreign ministry has said any investigation into the origins of the coronavirus would be premature.

Xi will deliver a speech via video link at the opening ceremony of the conference. China has been accused by some of early attempts to cover up the outbreak, which has gone on to claim more than 300,000 lives globally.

A joint EU-Australia draft resolution calling for an inquiry into the origins and spread of Covid-19 has the backing of 116 nations at the World Health Assembly. It needs the backing of two-thirds of the 194 members of the assembly before a resolution can be put forward.

However, China has voiced its staunch opposition to such a move and opposed a similar call from Australia last month.

On Monday, foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said it was still too early for an investigation as most countries believed the pandemic was not over.

UK joins more than 120 nations urging China to allow independent inquiry into Covid-19 origins
Australia and EU table resolution to World Health Assembly calling for 'impartial evaluation' of how outbreak happened

China is facing a growing chorus of calls for an independent inquiry into the origins of the coronavirus that has swept the globe as the World Health Organization convenes its key decision-making body for an annual assembly on Monday.

A draft resolution, tabled by Australia and the EU, calls to “initiate, at the earliest appropriate moment...a stepwise process of impartial, independent and comprehensive evaluation.” it also calls for “scientific and collaborative field missions” to identify the “source of the virus and the route of introduction to the human population".

China has 'lied, lied and lied again' says former Tory minister

China has "lied, lied and lied again" about the Covid-19 pandemic, a Tory former Home Office minister has said.

Lord Blencathra also rounded on the World Health Organisation and its director general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who he argued had "acted like the propaganda mouthpiece of the Chinese Communist Party, clearing China of all blame".

Speaking during a virtual House of Lords debate, the Conservative peer branded the global response as "feeble and kowtowing to China".

International calls for an independent investigation into the outbreak had failed to mention China, where it had originated, he said.

Lord Blencathra told peers: "That is like having an inquiry into the Second World War and not mentioning Nazi Germany had a little something to do with it.

"We know the outbreak originated in China, was covered up by China, that China destroyed the initial samples and that the regime has disappeared any doctors who spoke out.

"China has lied, lied and lied again about Covid-19. When this is over there has to be fundamental shift in working relationships with China."

Boris Johnson to reduce Huawei’s role in Britain’s 5G network in the wake of coronavirus outbreak

The Prime Minister plans to reduce Huawei’s involvement in Britain’s 5G network in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, the Telegraph has learned.

Boris Johnson has instructed officials to draw up plans that would see China’s involvement in the UK’s infrastructure scaled down to zero by 2023.

It comes as Mr Johnson is poised to visit the US for the G7 summit next month in his first trip abroad since the crisis began.

Having called for the UK to become more self-sufficient and less reliant on China for goods, he is expected to ramp up trade talks with US President Donald Trump as Brexit negotiations with the EU have become increasingly fractious.

If you isolate China they will retaliate, the worst case is violent conflict. If you push them into a corner 1.4bn people will react.

IMO it starts with Taiwan. Chinese media call Taiwan - "Taiwan Province, China". The clock is ticking...

How much debt does the West owe China ?
How many mineral rich African countries have sold themselves to China ?

It maybe hard than most people realise.

Ironically the only who has shown any sort of bollox is Trump. He seems to know exactly what their game is. Obama let the Chinese walk all over him. I remember when an American car maker said it was going to shut down it's US plant and move everything to Mexico. Trump informed them he would tarif them so much they wouldnt sell a single car in the US. They changed their mind I believe.

If ever there was a time and a chance to move all manufacturing back to the West - that time is now. And boycott everything that is made in China or tariff it out of existence. What they have done is nothing more negligent genocide.

Anything that has a 'made in China' label on it goes back on the shelf - I think everyone needs to do that, starting from now.

Completely agree. We are fighting an unprecedented global killer. They are to blame and need to acknowledge it.

They won't.

Embargo and send them into an economic wilderness.

Strong leadership needed

There are fears of a second wave of the virus in Beijing after an outbreak at a wholesale market in the China's capital. Forty-five new cases have been recorded after the city went weeks without any new infections. The local area has now been put back under lockdown

The World Health Organization says it expects China to share the full genetic sequence from the new coronavirus outbreak in Beijing with the rest of the world.

Speaking in Geneva, head of health emergencies Dr Mike Ryan said it was expected as "they have done in the past".

Beijing has seen a cluster of about 100 new cases of the virus, and is investigating the origins. Experts said the strain did not resemble the type found elsewhere in the country and genetic traces have suggested it could have originated in Europe.

"The finding that this may represent a strain more common in transmission in Europe is important and it may reflect human-to-human transmission more than any other hypotheses," Dr Ryan said.

Local media said the virus was discovered on chopping boards used for imported salmon at a market, leading to speculation that it was brought in on the fish or its packaging. Dr Ryan said the safety of food and its packaging should be looked at but added that he was "reticent" to say all food packaging needed testing.

It would be great to see China pay for the damage it has caused.

There is one small problem, The way China works is that they have invaded by economic stealth. The vast majority of western goods have been manufactured in China (our fault). In return China (as they have a surplus of wealth) have invested in other countries large infrastructure projects. In the UK, Chinese money is building the new nuclear reactor. Then we have the 5g debacle amongst others.

So they have leached their way into our economy in such a way that we are reliant on them. What they are doing in Hong Kong is yet further evidence of the way they operate.

Dont forget the 48club - a bunch of useful idiots Blair, Mandelson, Prescott, Heseltine , Jack Straw etc (mainly from the Left - but not all of them) a grooming club where China would exert influence in return on these well intentioned ideological idiots for projects / contracts / deals / leverage.

I thinks it's too late to start complaining now - they have won on just about every level.
Maybe we could tax the crap out of any uk company that moves its manufacturing operations abroad

Personally Im more concerned about blackburn tonight
