Financial Times

Spain started including the care homes deaths late and only started including them from the 1 April 2020

Catalonia and Madrid are now releasing figures that include the deaths of elderly people in care homes who displayed virus symptoms but were not tested. This is in line with changing practices in some countries, including Belgium. At present the official nationwide death toll in Spain, as with many other countries, includes only proven cases of the virus.

Some regions like the Balearic Islands and the Canaries included the deaths from early March.

Spanish death toll continues to fall

Spain's recorded 301 new deaths with coronavirus in 24 hours - down from Monday's figure of 331. The national total now stands at 23,822.

The number of confirmed cases rose by 1,308, bringing the country's total to 210,773.

Spain is one of the worst-affected countries in Europe but on Sunday it reported its lowest daily death toll in more than a month.

As restrictions begin to ease, children under the age of 14 have been allowed to leave their homes for the first time in six weeks.

Update on total death toll

The cumulative number of deaths of people who have tested positive for Covid-19 in the UK in all settings is now 26,771, according to data published by the Department of Health and Social Care.

This is an increase of 674 on the equivalent total announced on Wednesday, and is more than the 26,711 announced by Boris Johnson at Thursday's press conference.

Amendment to total UK coronavirus deaths

The Department of Health has clarified the total number of coronavirus deaths in the UK.

The correct figure is 26,771 and not 26,711 as Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in the government briefing earlier on.

The increase of 674 deaths in the past 24 hours that Johnson mentioned is correct.

The UK now has the third-highest official Covid-19 death toll, behind the USA and Italy.

Spain stretches its legs as restrictions eased

Guy Hedgecoe

BBC News, Spain

Spaniards have made the most of the latest easing of the national lockdown, as they have taken to the streets in droves since early this morning.

The lifting of the restrictions on exercise for adults has meant that thousands of joggers, walkers and cyclists have been able to go out purely for leisure in Madrid and other cities for the first time in seven weeks.

In many areas, the large numbers who took to the streets made it look almost like a normal Saturday morning, apart from the fact that social distancing was observed and few cars were on the roads.

Other sports were also practised. In the southern province of Cádiz, surfers have returned to the water this morning, although regular swimming remains prohibited.

Some, however, remain reluctant to venture out.

“I want to go out because it’s a beautiful day,” said Carmen Pérez, a 65-year-old in Madrid. “But I’m a bit scared of getting infected.”

Confirmed cases in Spain rose by 1,366 on Saturday to 216,582 with the number of deaths up by 276 to 25,100.

First day of the easing of restrictions meaning we can get out for some (well needed) exercise - though only up to 10am for adults or 20 to 23h at night.

Didn´t venture too far this morning but was nice to be out and see other people enjoying it too on a really warm morning.

We are allowed to walk with one other person from the same household but strangely enough, we all went separately after spending the last 49 days stuck in together

Masks must be worn on Spanish transport

Some more news from Spain, where people have been enjoying getting out and exercising after weeks trapped indoors.

The country will make masks compulsory on public transport from Monday to prevent a spike in coronavirus infections as the strict lockdown is eased.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said the government would distribute six million masks across the country from Monday, with another seven million being sent to local authorities.

Sanchez also said his government would approve a €16bn (£14.2bn) reconstruction fund to help regions deal with the social and economic impact of the pandemic.

Spain records lowest daily death toll in over six weeks

Spain has recorded its lowest daily death toll linked to coronavirus since 18 March, new figures from the health ministry show.

A total of 164 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, the lowest number in over six weeks, while new cases of the virus rose to 217,466 from 216,582.

Experts caution that numbers collated at the weekend are sometimes lower but have said that the figures are favourable.

A total of 25,264 have died with coronavirus in Spain but the country has started to gradually ease restrictions. Adults were able to exercise outdoors on Saturday for the first time in seven weeks. From Monday, face masks will be compulsory on all public transport.

As the usual people keep bringing up populations:

Italy has a population of 60mill but are now only 130 deaths ahead of the UK, but had the virus 3 weeks before the Uk.

Uk had the chance to prepare way more than Italy & Spain did.

UK's real Covid-19 death toll is 32,375, data shows

A total of 32,375 deaths involving Covid-19 have now been registered across the UK, new data has shown.

Today's figures from the Office for National Statistics show that 29,710 deaths involving Covid-19 had been registered in England and Wales up to May 2.

The latest figures from the National Records of Scotland, published last week, showed 2,272 deaths involving Covid-19 had been registered in Scotland up to April 26.

And the latest figures from the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency, also published last week, showed 393 deaths involving Covid-19 had been registered in Northern Ireland up to April 29.

In each case, the figures are based on all mentions of Covid-19 on a death certificate, including suspected Covid-19.

Updated figures from the National Records of Scotland are due to be published tomorrow.
