If you were given the option to strengthen the team between now and the transfer window, what position would you strengthen, what player(s) would you bring in ?
Would you let anyone go out on loan or would you sell someone to fund a deal ?
City have not paid one transfer fee this summer and we are at a maximum for long term loans but the possiblity of short term loans are an option.
Will you do a player swap deal to get a deal done ?
Your the boss, take control.

cover at centre half is a priority carl because however well hudson plays you always get that feeling he has a clanger in him atsome stage

And Carl, you are the one with the Knowledge.
Stop teasing - who's going and who's coming in?
Whitts on his way for £2.0m, ~Riggott in on a free and the best part of £2.0m to be spent on a premiership centre half??

Well Steve, Riggott is training with the squad still and there is a behind closed doors game arranged this week for him, do you think he is the answer ?

As a fan Carl, what do you think??

If I was not allowed to spend money then I would look to sell one of the players who are in their last year of their contract and who is not signing a new contract put in front of them.
I would sell the one I think I would miss the least/have cover for, then I would use the funds to bring in a quality centre half who can defend and play a bit too.
I would even consider offering my sellable player to a club for a swap deal if that was the way to get a top quality centre half in because everyone knows we need one.
I would sign up Riggott if he proves his fitness and I would allow Taiwo and Rae to move on and Gerrard could go if I got who I wanted.
That is what i would do.

to me carl if your leaving it this late to make a decision havent you really made it already.
of course we could be waiting to see what other options are available to us as premier teams announce their 25 man squads.
with regards to him being the answer i do as long as he is fit but that must still be a major concern to the club otherwise i think we would have signed him now.

The 25 man squad rule will create a lot of movement in the next few days Steve.

So, on that basis you'd be looking to offload Burke/Whittigham or Matthews ?
Its a difficult sceanario.
I don't think there would be many who would argue with shipping out Rae, Taiwo, Commingues and Quinn. But would anyone want these players, given the wages they are on, and moreso pay a fee ?
If we could shift 3 or 4 of them then it would release wages for 1-2 better players to come in.
Hopefully something can be worked out with Riggott, but I'm not hoping for too much., as we've done very well out of the transfer dealings as it is and used up all our long term loans.
If one of the 3 originally mentioned goes it will release funds, but I think I'd prefer to keep the options and strength we have up front and make do with what we've got with perhaps the addition of Riggot at the back.
If we get an injury/suspension to a centre half then maybe use the short term loan market to patch it up . otherwise Gerrard, Quinn or Kev will have to step up to the mark, along with Blake who did it very well last year.

I agree - as long as the player leaving is not Jay, because we don't have cover for him, though we do for midfield. So which club, who would like Whitts has got a quality centre half who can defend and play a bit??
Sun Aug 29, 2010 1:54 pm
I would not release Whitts unless he doesn't sign a new contract. (And the competition between him and Koumas would be vital)
Who would i defo release : Hudson, Rae, Capaldi, Taiwo, Mcphail, Gerrard (if he doesn't knuckle down loose the weight get his attitude right and fight for his place back) Perhaps a bit of the Blake treatment might help him. Quinn!! he defo has potential so let him out on loan but i wouldn't sell him yet.
The Players we must not loose Burke, Chops, Jay, Blake, Mathews. And Gypes who is showing his worth now.

there is no point in bringing anyw one in on a short term loan. Teams are only allowed to have a maximum of 5 loan players in their match day squad. we curently have drinks, oli, koumas, keogh and bellamy.
The best now is free transfers or paying a fee. We deffo need a centre half, thats about it.

Agree Lou but would you sell to fund a deal ?

i would fund a deal. but depends on the mind of the players on year contract? depends if they got football or bank account on der mind i suppose, i rather not us get robbed of money again.
i would like whitts etc to stay but money talks. if i was in charge i would sell to fund especially if player is having doubts on wanting cardiff to get to prem. .....
prob get shot down with this but its my opnion

Carl,
I would look to move on a few fringe players to free up one major centre back signing, the players I would look to move on are Gavin Rae, Solomon Taiwo, Anthony Gerrard or Gabor Gypes that would free up enough wages to pay for a decent centre half - we would get some back in on transfers but would rather have them off the wage bill
it also depends on the out of contract players and how far down the road they are and how likely they are to sign for Cardiff
I would keep Burke, Bothroyd, Matthews, McNaughton and Whittngham but the one player I would let go is McPhail that would fund enough to buy a very good centre back as I cant see where McPhail will fit into the team when he is back fit

Would we get a fee for McPhail now though after his illness and injuries in the last 12 months. He's getting near the end of his contract as well.

The Centre half position is usualy the first to get a suspension or long term injury. As it's not uncommon for both cemtre halves to be out at the same time it makes sense to have two centre halves covering. All the good work can easily be undone by having an inadequate defence. We need a comanding presence in the back.

Ability to get stuck in ? Gavin Rae is an enigma, watching him play against Bristol City at home last season he was immense totally unplayable. But since then he has been pants and i would like to here from him why he went from immense to pants because as they say you dont become shite over night but Gavin did. Over to you Gav !!

Generally, we got the cover we needed - midfield and upfront cover for Jay were essential and are an upgrade on what we had. A new centre half was not a priority, but would be an added bonus if we could find one.
We have [i]good [i]centre halves IMHO, but not outstanding - we have been spoiled a bit in recent years with Gabbs, Ginge, Loovens and RJ. The ones we have are adequate, but not outstanding - there aren't many in the Championship who are obviously better.
Why has Gerrard gone out of favour so much? For most of last season the first choice pairing was Hudson and Gerrard, with Gypes as the backup. Also, him and Blake kept us in the playoff race at the end of the season when Hudson and Gypes were unavailable. Although not perfect, I felt he was the best one we had last year, so why talk about shipping him out.
To sum up, Carl, I would like just to keep the players we have got for now, and look to change things in January if necessary.

I would leave the squad alone now but look to utilize what I have a bit more. Blake was excellent at Centre-Back last season and I also think Quinn could do a decent job there, so IMO decent cover does exist.

I would rather keep the defence we have as opposed to selling Whitts, Burke, Jay or Chora to sign a defender.
We have the same defence as last year and we finished 4th. At present we have a better attack and a much better midfield. Add it all up, we should finish above 4th with the current squad.
