Cardiff City join Swansea City and Sheffield Wednesday in race to sign Man Utd starlet James Garner - report

Daily Mail

Wednesday 20th May 2020

Manchester United are keen on letting the 19-year-old out on loan next season and WalesOnline understands a number of Championship clubs are interested in taking him

Cardiff City are reportedly the latest club to register an interest in taking Manchester United youngster James Garner on loan next season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is said to be keen on loaning the player out next term, with Garner having impressed for the club's under 23s and in their Europa League campaign.

And, according to the Daily Mail, Neil Harris' side is among the clubs ready to pounce when the summer market opens.

It is likely the Bluebirds will face stiff opposition, of course, South Wales rivals Swansea chief among them, with it having been suggested that Garner could become the latest former member of Steve Cooper's England under-17s set-up to be lined up for a move to SA1.

A move for Garner, though, would appear to make little sense for Cardiff. The club, like most others in the second tier, are facing financial difficulty and chairman Mehmet Dalman tempered fans' expectations when it comes to spending big this summer.

Which means Harris will have to be extremely selective when it comes to where he strengthens his squad. And, it must be said, in the middle of the park is where City are well stocked, with Will Vaulks, Joe Ralls, Leandro Bacuna and Marlon Pack all vying for two spots.

Should Cardiff keep hold of that quartet, it would make little sense to add another player, whose club will be desperate for him to have ample game time, to that mix.

The Welsh capital city club are likely to be restricted in the number of signings they make and with a lack of depth in certain positions, such as right-back and up top, they would be better served targeting those areas.

The one aspect giving this story credence, however, is that Harris is keen to use the loan system in order to keep transfer costs down.

The Mail report that many of the clubs credited with an interest enquired about the player back in January, which would also be in-keeping with Harris' loan policy.

For Swansea, given he has already worked under Cooper, it's easy to see why he's been mentioned with a move a little further down the M4.

There has been some suggestion that Swansea's decision to enforce wage deferrals on the current squad could potentially be an obstacle to any incomings, but Fairwood insiders are confident that the decision will not have a negative impact on their transfer business.

Garner, who has been with the United academy since the age of eight, has been a regular at under-23 level and is highly rated by those in the know at Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer handed the youngster his debut back in February 2019 for the trip to Crystal Palace, along with several appearances in this season's Europa League campaign.

Cardiff City plotting swoop for Manchester United midfielder

By Harry Mail

Wednesday 20th May 2020

Cardiff city have joined the race for Manchester united midfielder james garner, according to a report by the daily mail.

Championship duo Swansea City and Sheffield Wednesday have been linked with the youngster over the past few days and the Bluebirds are also interested in his services.

Manchester United are likely to loan out the midfielder this summer for more first-team experience next season.

Cardiff are eager to bolster their squad for next season as Neil Harris gears up for his first full campaign at the helm. The former Millwall boss wants to put his own stamp on the Welsh side with some signings.

Garner, who is 19 years old, was born in Birkenhead but has risen up through the youth ranks with the Red Devils. He has been a key player for United at youth levels so far in his career and is being tipped for a big future in the game.

He was handed his senior debut in a Premier League fixture against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in February 2019 before he was handed a new deal at Old Trafford until 2022, with the option for a further year.

Garner made his European debut for Manchester United against Partizan in October 2019 and has since played five more times in all competitions for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

He now faces a big decision on his first loan move away from Old Trafford with Cardiff, Swansea and Sheffield Wednesday set to battle it out for him over the coming months.

The promising 19-year-old, who has figured in several first-team squads under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, is likely to be allowed out on loan next season and once the transfer window opens.

I agree fully with utilising the loan market to keep costs down, but use it on areas of the team which needs strengthening.

It would seem pretty pointless signing another central midfielder when we already have 4 players completing for 2 starting berths.

I would be looking at the full back positions and a back up to Tomlin as top priorities.
