The revealing pictures that show Cardiff City stars breaking themselves to get fit for Championship restart

The Bluebirds have had a long lay-off from group training owing to the outbreak of coronavirus, but they have been doing their utmost to keep in shape during lockdown

Football in this country may well have been put on hold, but, for the players, the work never stops.

The gravity of the situation called for group gatherings, including football training sessions, to cease, meaning Bluebirds stars were sent home to maintain their fitness levels.

The club provided them with enough equipment and tailored training programmes to ensure their conditioning did not diminish too drastically while the season was put on ice and, from the evidence we have seen, they appear to have stuck to their regimes religiously.

The players have largely documented their progress on social media and it seems what is required of them is pretty demanding.

For the stars who were injured before the break, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, Lee Tomlin and Greg Cunningham, it has been a time for rehabilitation. Mendez-Laing has shown the incredible work he has been putting in over the last few months, with a series of photos documenting his strength work as well as HIIT sessions on the bike.

Cunningham, meanwhile, who initially looked as though he would be out for the season with the ACL tear he sustained while on loan at Blackburn Rovers, has been hitting the weights, too, to build back his strength.

Tomlin has also chronicled the work he has been doing on the treadmill of late in his Instagram stories, while Sol Bamba, who is desperate to get back to his peak condition following his injury travails over the last 12 months or so, posted a magnificent photo to show how exhausted he was after one running session.

Of the three injured stars, Neil Harris recently said : "If there is anything to gain from this period of uncertainty, it's that these players are getting fitter, Lee and Nathaniel in particular.

"If the season recommences in the middle of June, whether they are ready for the first game back or to take part in that first game or even be part of the first-team squad. these are players we are able to rely on now for the remainder of the season.

"Greg Cunningham; the plan for him was to get him back in for pre-season in July, to return for the following season, but he is in really good shape as well.

"Will we see him before the end of July in competitive action? That's a long way off for Greg at the moment, but he is really, really doing well.

"It would be good to have an almost fully fit squad if we are back playing again in June or July."

You can see how all the Cardiff City players are getting on with their fitness regimes in the picture below.

Cardiff City stars' training regimes during lockdown

For Callum Paterson, a spot of fishing in the garden has helped him relax during his downtime, while close mates Marlon Pack and Aden Flint have enjoyed lengthy bike rides together around Bristol in recent weeks.

Leandro Bacuna, meanwhile, has taken up boxing to stay sharp and has also designed a small pitch in his back garden, where he can play with his Huddersfield Town-player brother, with whom he is isolating, to keep his footballing skills up to scratch.

For City goalkeeper Neil Etheridge, he has taken up yoga in order to ensure he is at his most flexible as he tries to force his way past Alex Smithies between the sticks when football is back up and running.

A lot of conditioning work has gone into keeping the players in shape, however the real work is set to begin next week with the resumption of the Championship campaign seemingly on the horizon.

The Welsh Government have given Cardiff City the green light to return to squad training next week, although a lengthy list of guidelines must be adhered to, including players returning negative coronavirus tests.

Players conducted the first round of coronavirus testing on Thursday and will continue to do so on Friday, with club doctors to receive the results within 24 hours ahead of a scheduled return to training next week.

Strict measures have been implemented for the players' return, as has been evident at Premier League training grounds this week, which will largely consist of socially-distanced drills and exercises.

There will be no contact, sessions are permitted to last for a maximum of only 75 minutes and players must actively "opt-in", per government guidelines.

NML looks a beast. Almost like he's put too much muscle on... But then he's been out cycling and running too. Guy looks ready to go!

And flint, surprised how quick the guy is. Shares his Strava running stats. Been smashing the 5kms!
