It wasn't how Peter Jackson envisaged his time at Huddersfield Town coming to an end.

A club captain at Town, over 150 Football League appearances and a firm affinity with the Terriers faithful, 'Jacko' thought he was to get his crowning glory in blue and white stripes - a Wembley final appearance.

In the lead up to the 1994 Autoglass Trophy Final, Jackson had played every game in the competition and even netted twice in the earlier rounds before the showdown in the capital with Swansea City.

But Jackson, despite being given the honour of leading the team out underneath the twin towers, had to be a frustrated spectator, an unused substitute as Neil Warnock's Town lost 3-1 on penalties to the Swans.

Speaking to the 'And He Takes That Chance' podcast, Town legend Jackson, 59, said: "The turning point was when we got to Wembley. I'd played in every single round and I think I scored in two of the rounds as well.

Peter Jackson:

“We get to the final and he pulls me, and this was the breaking point in our relationship.

“I still had two years left on my contract and he says 'I'm leaving you out at Wembley, I'm going to play Pat Scully'.

“Pat Scully? Now Pat Scully wasn't as a good a player as me, I know that. But he said I can lead the side out at Wembley and I thought, this is odd, this.

“That was the downturn, when he left me out that day at Wembley I knew it was time for me leave Huddersfield.”

The relationship between Jackson and Warnock, two strong characters, was a fractious one.

Warnock, a Division Two play-off winning manager with Town in 1995, had arrived at the club in 1993, replacing Ian Ross at the helm.

Jackson was swiftly installed as a reserve team coach alongside Kevin Blackwell and all seemed well, although Jackson suggests an ulterior motive.

Recalled Jackson: "He didn't get off to the best of starts. He was coming under a little bit of stick and I was still this cult figure at the club.

“He was quite clever with what he did, he made me reserve team coach with Kevin Blackwell. I respected him for that as he made me part of the staff.

“I was playing ok and playing fine but then we started winning games and went on this run to Wembley. But the further we went our relationship (deteriorated). He mentioned in his book that Huddersfield wasn't big enough for Peter Jackson and Neil Warnock so one of us had to go, and I was the one who had to go.

“What he did, Neil, he got me on board and the fans were thinking 'if Jacko is on board with Neil then we're behind him'.

“We went on that run and I was surplus. I'd been used, and I do think I was used, to build him up and get him going. I was so popular at the time he needed rid of me, he needed me out of the club."

Jackson left Town in 1994, moving to Chester City on loan under the the management of Everton legend Kevin Ratcliffe and going on to make 99 Football League appearances for the Blues, reaching his 600th career game milestone at the club at the same time as teammate, England and Coventry City legend Cyrille Regis.

Jackson would, of course, return to Town as boss in two separate stints between 1997 and helped the club avoid relegation in his first spell at the helm before a masterminding a return to Division Two via the play-offs in 2004 and helping the club reach the League One play-offs in 2006.
