Something does not seem right with these figures with two welsh areas in top ten and only one area in London which has a population over 3 x Wales

Brent, Croydon and Barnet are London mate, so 3 of the top 10 in London Borough not 1.

Is Croydon not in Greater London area and not London Bit like Bolton and Wigan being in Greater Manchester but you would never say they are in Manchester

R value hovering around one in much of the UK

The reproductive rate is at or above one in two English regions, according to new figures published by Public Health England and Cambridge University.

The R rate, or R-0, is used to estimate how many people an infected individual will pass an illness onto, on average. Any number above one means that an outbreak will grow.

According to the latest batch of data, the R rate is at one in the North-East and the South-West.

But in other regions the figure is declining, indicating that rates of infection are falling. The median rate in London is at 0.95, while it is at 0.97 in the South East.

It is lower in the Midlands (0.9) and the North-East and Yorkshire, although both of these regions have reported relatively high death tolls this week, demonstrating the time lag of the R rate.

Deaths surpass 40,000 in the UK after 357 additional fatalities

The Department for Health and Social Care has released today's coronavirus figures - the UK's death toll has now surpassed the grim total of 40,000.

Yes it is but you are the one who by default included it with your claim that London has 3 x the population of Wales.

This is only true if your basing it on the population of 'Greater London' of which Croydon, Brent and Barnet are all equally a part of.

Yes the figure quoted above is way off, been around 250 for weeks now. Almost half of which are from care homes.

Regional lockdowns may be necessary

Regional lockdowns could be imminent, the Health Secretary has said after modelling suggested that the rate of coronavirus infection is increasing in some parts of the country.

A report by Public Health England and Cambridge University estimated that the 'R' rate appeared to have risen in all regions and was close to or above one in the north-west and south-west. If the rate rises above one, it means the infection is spreading exponentially.

Asked whether there was a case for more regional restrictions, Matt Hancock said: "We want to increasingly have an approach of tackling local lockdowns where we spot a flare-up."
