I have a 4 bedroom villa with my own pool cost me 95 grand ( down the South of Cyprus it would cost approx 300 grand).

There are approx 30 thousand ex pats who live in North Cyprus. I get 17% interest on my savings in the bank ( who have the same guarantee as UK banks)
A pint of local beer EFES is 8 or 9 Turkish Lira and I’m currently getting about 8 lira to the pound.

Me and Mrs actually go out most nights cos it’s so cheap. 3 course meal approx £8.

We tend to fly from Bristol with EasyJet to Larnaca and then get a North taxi to pick us up for £25 ( hours drive).

North Cyprus isn’t recognised by any Country apart from Turkey so if we fly into the North we have to travel via Istanbul.

This is definitely the cheapest place to the UK

Hadn’t thought about this, despite living in the south for 4 years, as my knowledge of the north isn’t the best. I do remember needing an additional car insurance that was much cheaper in the local village as opposed to buying it on the border.

We did have two separate incidents over the north where guys tried to over charge us, but you get good and bad everywhere. The way of life was very laid back and it also provides the option of easily visiting the south. Something to look into. Thanks!

Is a UK bank account an option?

Also, what’s the food costs over there?

Food in the south that was really expensive, as well as the electricity (which I’m led to believe is the most expensive in Europe by my friends in the south), so good to see the cheap north price for electricity.

Food costs are dirt cheap compared to rest of Europe. That includes supermarkets and restaurants.
The North has its own ( old) power station but Turkey have recently run a cable under the sea to provide even cheaper electricity and a giant water pipe to provide more water.
They drive on the left and all street signs are in English.

We love the laid back nature of the Turkish Cypriots. The North isn’t that well known but still has 30 thousand ex pats who live there.
The main seaside/tourist resort is Kyrenia which is gorgeous. We live in a village called Catalkoy which is ten mins from Kyrenia but the whole main road between the two is full with bars/shops/restaurants etc.
There are many 5 star hotels and even some 6 star ones who all do cracking daily deals....for example all you can eat and drink from 7-10pm for £15 including local alcohol. Not sure where else you can get these type of deals in such high class hotels.

A lot of the big hotels are very much like Las Vegas hotels with huge water parks and casinos. A lot of Turks fly over to visit the casinos at weekends.

Currently you can pick up some apartments in places like Esentepe ( a further 20 mins drive from Kyrenia) for around £30 grand.

We only ever went on holiday over the north once and that was to Kyrenia. We normally went to Paphos or Limassol for holiday as we lived in the east near Prot. Seems like a distant memory now though as we returned in 2014. Still miss the meze’s.

Sounds like you’re making the most of the time there.

The cost of living depends on the country you choose and the area within those countries You can live reasonable comfortable in Spain on £500 a week for two without any mortgage in most parts Similar in Portugal , Malta ,Greece

I didn’t realise that I’d still be entitled to NHS as a UK passport holder if I don’t live in the UK. My wife is an American citizen, with an indefinite right to remain in the UK visa, so I’d have to look into that. There’s always medical insurance I suppose.

Country-wise, Cyprus would be the dream move having spent 4 great years there. However, I’m hoping to move and live off my work pension which I get aged 43. I’d have to live off that - with employment being a bonus as never guaranteed - until state pension kicks in later on in life. Cost of living would rule out Cyprus.

I’ve always loved Spain, so that is probably the favoured one at the moment for cost, weather and geographical reasons. I’ve read that Thailand is quite cheap, but was putting it out there to see if any other options are viable from people’s own experiences.

Thank you for the information.

Good luck, what works pension pays out at 43?

Thank you.

Military. I should have had an immediate pension aged 42 upon completion of a 22-year career, but I’ve extended a year which I’m really grateful about given the current climate.

You've gone for an EDP have you? How does that work for you? I'm under AFP75 myself so it's 60 for me. A pal of mine retired two years ago as a Colonel and is pulling in around 40k a year.

If I’m being honest, I’m no expert on pensions. I did recently write to Glasgow who provided a better breakdown than the usual annual print off we now get.

I joined in Jan 99, so the majority of my pension is on the 75 scheme. I turned down the 05 offer (as most did) and now have an element in the 15 pension, but they will honour my service on the 75 scheme. I’m still hopeful the original pension will be honoured in its entirety as it’s going through the courts now.

I get a lump sum pay off on exit and then a monthly amount (taxed) for the rest of my life. This monthly amount is not index linked, so theoretically I get poorer every year until aged 55 when it jumps up to the level it would have been. The bigger the lump sum, the less per month. This is part of my immediate (not full) pension. I was under the impression that everyone who served on the 75 pension had an immediate pension upon 22 years service, but I’m only a Cpl so it will be nowhere near your mates figures.

I’d be looking to sell my house and use some of that money to bolster my income, but I’m not looking to move in the near future. More just doing research for holidays to recce the areas do potentially retire to.

When did you get out?

You’re not allowed to buy a house in Thailand mate. I’ve been many times.

Unless of course you ditch the Mrs and remarry a 21yr old Thai bird.

I’ve also been to Portugal about 40 times. Love it it there, fantastic country but the winters can be cold at times with a fair bit of rain.

  I’ll propose it to my missus in the morning.

That makes it a bit clearer. My pal started off as a Pte and was a bit of a flyer. Met him first when he was my Plt Sgt. Mind you he was in uniform when I was in liquid form the old fooker. Good luck with retirement mate.

This is true, as my late wife's uncle found to his detriment...

Moved to Phuket, met and married a local girl, built a house in her name, as is Thai Law, and dead 6 months later (run over by a speed boat with no charges ever brought) with no recourse whatsoever for his family back home

Beautiful place though and great for tourists :ayatollah:

I haven't looked into it, but to give 17% something dodgy is going on, high inflation or something, or they can't borrow from any banks or institutions?

The banks are owned by big Turkish banks ( some are part owned by the giant Spanish banks) they are as solid as the UK banks.
Like I say I was previously getting 28.5% when I first went out there. The latest rates offered to me have been between 12 and 15% once my current deal runs out.
My mate from Porthcawl rents a 3 bed villa with own pool for £250 a month he’s been living there for 15 years.

Yes it’s a bloody great deal. He sold up in Wales and the interest he has earnt over the 15 years has paid his rent.

Christmas Day we all went to The Lords Palace ( a 6 star hotel in Kyrenia) we had a stunning 7 course lunch with all you can drink local alcohol and two live bands for £25. Last year we paid £65 each for a shit meal at Lewis Arms in Tongwynlais.

Boxing day we went to The Malpas ( 5 star hotel) same kinda thing 5 course meal with all you can drink and live band for £20.

It’s such good value for money.

Don’t forget it’s NOT in the EU so you can’t work legit ( plenty of ex pats want jobs doing though) :D :D

You now have to tax the car yourself (and technically should've done before you picked it up) you tax will run from 1st March so yes the Govt effectively charged the VED twice on that particular vehicle.

Anywhere in EU now will cost you unless you lived here prior to Jan 01st 2021 and was registered as living here. You cannot spend more than 3 months in every 6 months in the Schengen zone. Driving license has to be changed to Spanish and any other country if you live here as a resident. Lots more reasons not to also financially wise. :bluebird:

I’ve lived in England and Scotland, but fancied something different. I’d rather stay in Wales if in UK as better family network, job opportunities through contacts and children have friends here having followed me around the world for many years. I would only move abroad and not considering it for many years.
