How the national media reacted to Cardiff City toppling Leeds United

The Bluebirds resumed their Championship campaign with a tremendous win over Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds United

Monday 21st June 2020

The Championship is back and Cardiff City are back to winning ways.

The Bluebirds secured a mightily impressive 2-0 win over Leeds United on Sunday afternoon courtesy of two stunning strikes from Junior Hoilett and Robert Glatzel.

It puts the Bluebirds level on points with Preston, who they play next weekend, and just one goal behind them on goal difference.

But the result at Cardiff City Stadium will have sent shockwaves to those who currently occupy the play-off spots, while the Elland Road club missed an opportunity to leapfrog West Brom back into first place in the table.

'Ruthless and dogged' - The Guardian

"Just like that, Fulham’s trip to Elland Road next Saturday has quadrupled in significance. Marcelo Bielsa frenetically rubbed his hands together in the dugout but he could not conjure a comeback as Leeds United returned from the enforced break with a bump.

"In the end Bielsa, for so long head bowed, arms folded, was roaring his players on with great urgency but ultimately left to bemoan errors by two of his most consistent performers and the ruthlessness of a dogged Cardiff side, who prospered from their only shots on target courtesy of brilliant strikes by Junior Hoilett and Robert Glatzel.

"Cardiff proved fiendishly difficult to break down and, when Leeds did carve an opening, Patrick Bamford inadvertently blocked Jack Harrison’s goal-bound shot in front of Alex Smithies, who later saved superbly to prevent Tyler Roberts prodding in from close range.

"As Bielsa acknowledged, this was a golden opportunity missed but results 24 hours earlier provided scant consolation, with Fulham’s defeat to Brentford and West Bromwich Albion’s draw ensuring an implosion is required if Leeds are to relinquish their grip. As for Cardiff, they are quietly going about their business under Neil Harris and victory hoists them to seventh, firmly in the play-off conversation."

'Leeds were devoid of any luck' - The Athletic

"Leeds were pressing the home side back, camping them in their box, when Junior Hoilett smashed and grabbed by picking up a pass which slipped off Kalvin Phillips’ boot. A stand-offish defence allowed Hoilett to run at them and drive the ball inside Illan Meslier’s right-hand post. It was harsh given the balance of play but these are the stakes in a nine-game rampage. Leeds would have replied just before half-time had Jack Harrison’s shot not struck team-mate Patrick Bamford’s heel on the Cardiff goalline.

"The pattern was similar with 19 minutes to go: Liam Cooper selling a pass short of Gjanni Alioski and Cardiff teeing up substitute Robert Glatzel for a blistering volley off the inside of a post.

"If three months in a holding pattern left any rust or sloppiness in Leeds’ blood, it was there to see in both goals. It needed a sharper edge to pull the game around from 2-0 down and Bielsa, despite the way he cracked the whip behind his players during lockdown, could not find it. “We should have created more chances,” he said. “In quantity and quality.”

"Leeds were devoid of any luck too, not least when Alex Smithies pulled off a point-blank save as Tyler Roberts tried to rifle in Bamford’s downward header.

"After all the quiet confidence about a fast start post-lockdown and the internal belief that Leeds’ fitness would be superior when it mattered… none of it shone through in Cardiff. None of it told."

'Daft in the extreme' - Daily Mail

"Cardiff barely saw any possession and created just a handful of chances but, unlike Leeds, they seized them and are now just one goal behind Preston North End in the final play-off spot.

"A Leeds goal looked inevitable when they gifted Cardiff their opener late in the first half.

"(Kalvin) Phillips may be known as the 'Yorkshire Pirlo' and be on the radar of England manager Gareth Southgate, but his blind pass straight to Junior Hoilett just inside his own half was daft in the extreme.

"Hoilett had an awful lot of work still to do but advanced to the edge of the Leeds box, ignoring options on both sides. His shot was perfect, always rising and beating keeper Ilian Meslier at his near post.

"(Liam) Cooper's error wasn't as bad but received the same punishment. Leeds were trying to play out of defence as they searched for a second-half leveller and Cooper's pass went directly to Nathaniel Mendez-Laing.

"He picked out Robert Glatzel with a square pass and the German, just on as a substitute, took a controlling touch before hammering volley in off the post.

"Cardiff were home and dry, Leeds culpable for what had happened and out of ideas."

'They looked sharp' - Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Sky Sports

"To be fair, they deserved to win. They looked further in their fitness, way further, and they looked sharp.

"Leeds looked a little bit slow at times, even though they had more of the ball.

"Cardiff looked comfortable and it’s a big, big three points for Cardiff. It will give them massive belief going into their next game - the Preston game.

"They looked good. They looked in control.

"At the start of the second half, before that break at 20 minutes, they were struggling a bit but after that, they looked in control and it was very impressive."

Just proves that stats mean F-All.

The only stat that matters is the score at the end of the game!

Wouldn't be surprised if they were Yorkshire based journalists working for national papers?

Exactly. Not all teams play the same, and nor can they. If Leeds think passing the ball around and crossing it to the useless Bamford, then great, no wonder they miss so many chances.

Atletico Madrid nor Leicester have the same sort of stats as some of the bigger teams in the league, but it doesn't mean they don't play effective football. They have to adapt to their opposition. We have quite a flexible team tactically, whereas certain teams such as Leeds can only play in one way or the whole thing falls apart. Fair cop to them for being able to play the way they have with the players they have and be where they are, but I have seen far better teams than LUFC this season, yet Bielsa gets a documentary done on him :sleepy2:
