Travel industry hopes air bridges are a ticket to survival

From the beaches of Malaga to faraway Greek islands and retreats in the South of France, hopes are rising that holidays and business trips to Europe could be back this summer and revive the travel industry in the process.

The anticipated introduction of "air bridges" - or "travel corridors" as the Government prefers to call them - will enable trips to destinations including France, Italy, Spain, Greece and Germany without the need to quarantine for 14 days on their return.

Details of the plans, seen as a vital move for airlines, airports and holiday operators, are set to be unveiled at the weekend. They will take into account virus infection rates in other countries, the availability of test and trace systems and social distancing rules.

“We have been calling for travel corridors to be in place instead of the quarantine measures for a while,” says Paul Charles, spokesperson for Quash Quarantine, a lobby group of more than 500 travel, hospitality and hotel businesses including tour operator Abercrombie and Kent, restaurant and bar chain TGI Fridays and luxury resort Club Med.

Air bridges backlash: Pressure on Boris Johnson to extend plan to all EU countries

Boris Johnson was under pressure tonight to open air bridges to the whole of Europe at once, as he prepared to announce that “dozens” of countries will be exempted from the 14-day quarantine.

He is expected to signal the change in policy on Friday when he announces the go ahead for air bridges led by some of the most popular Mediterranean holiday destinations including Italy, France, Spain and Greece.

The list of up to 50 nations and the full coronavirus criteria used by Public Health England (PHE) to determine those for the first wave of air bridges opening from July 4 is due to be published on Monday.

It is expected to include most Western European nations like Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Norway and Finland and “low risk” island nations.

However, drafts of the list this week excluded Portugal, one of the top holiday destinations for Britons, because of an outbreak of Coronavirus in and around Lisbon, Sweden because of its higher rate, and many other nations.

But companies out there are setting out there own policy if you go abroad you will have to quarantine for two weeks. And you have to use holiday or unpaid leave. Happened to me. Only work 8 hrs a week so I just told them I will take in unpaid.
Comes to something that companies now try to rule your life on your days off or when you take holiday leave. Pathetic especially for those that can’t afford to take time off no pay.
