Premier League clubs are willing to offer a “significant” financial package to ease the financial crisis in the EFL.

Mirror Football revealed the Premier League is now talking about a multi-million pound bail out for troubled clubs, particularly those struggling in League One and Two.

The Premier League has already advanced £125million to the EFL and National League during the coronavirus pandemic to ease the financial nightmare facing clubs.

This new cash boost will be in addition to the £125m and, even though it is not known how much or in what form it will take, there is a general resolve to try and help.

Premier League bosses declined to comment but Mirror Football understands the 20 top flight clubs agreed at their meeting on Thursday to look into how they can offer financial support to the EFL.

Newly-promoted Fulham, West Brom and Leeds all know the difficulties facing the EFL and the general mood was understood to be supportive.

It is a major departure from the original stance from the Premier League who are facing their own problems because of lost gate receipts, drop in TV revenue and sponsorship deals.

The EFL is also facing major worries over the Carabao Cup but dates and fixtures are likely to be confirmed shortly with the first round set for September 5.

However, some Premier League big guns involved in European competition may field under-23s teams as the top flight clubs were told the fixtures could clash with Europa and Champions League games in the early weeks of the season.

It could impact upon the Carabao Cup deal and sponsorship if Premier League teams are putting the kids out and that could be another reason why the top flight is looking to offer some much-needed support.
