Middlesbrough are hoping to sign Wales international Kieffer Moore from Wigan Athletic - but face competition from Cardiff

MIDDLESBROUGH will make a final push for Kieffer Moore in the next 24 hours, and remain hopeful of persuading the Wigan Athletic striker to turn down the offer of a move to Cardiff City in order to sign on at the Riverside.

Both Boro and Cardiff are understood to have had bids of around £2m accepted by the administrators currently running Wigan, and Moore has spent the weekend assessing his options after speaking to the managers of both clubs.

QPR also had a bid accepted for the 28-year-old, but Moore is believed to have informed officials at the London club that he will not be moving to Loftus Road.

That leaves the path open for Boro and Cardiff, with Wigan’s administrators keen to resolve the situation this week as they look to raise funds to pay off their football creditors. Joe Gelhardt is set to complete a £900,000 move to Leeds United tomorrow, but Wigan’s administration team see Moore’s sale as their best opportunity of beginning to restore the club to a sounder financial footing.

Cardiff have long been regarded as the favourites to land the forward, with Moore’s status as a Wales international likely to influence his thoughts when it comes to choosing his next employers.

Moore’s status within Welsh football would increase if he was to impress with the Bluebirds, and having only missed out in the play-offs this season, Neil Harris will be stressing that Cardiff remain well placed to mount another promotion push next term. Robert Glatzel endured something of a mixed campaign after joining Cardiff in a £5.5m move last summer, and Harris will be telling Moore he wants him to lead the line.

Warnock will be making the same assurances regarding Boro, with Moore seen as an upgrade on Britt Assombalonga, who will leave Teesside this summer if an acceptable bid is received. Having broken their transfer record to sign Assombalonga for £15m in the wake of relegation from the Premier League, the Boro hierarchy accept they will have to incur a significant loss in order to move the striker on.

Moore is Warnock’s preferred replacement, and the 71-year-old has held lengthy talks with the forward and his representatives. Whether his powers of persuasion have worked remains to be seen, but sources claim the Boro boss remains hopeful despite being aware of Cardiff’s competing interest.

Warnock’s Cardiff links mean he is fully abreast of everything that is happening in South Wales, and the former Bluebirds boss has sounded out the possibility of signing Junior Hoilett from his old club.

Hoilett played under Warnock at QPR and Cardiff, and the Boro boss is interested in working with the 30-year-old winger for a third time.

Hoilett has entered the final year of his contract with Cardiff, and Warnock no doubt senses the opportunity to pull of a deal despite the Canada international being an integral part of Harris’ first-team squad last season.

Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock in 11th hour bid to gazump Cardiff City swoop for Kieffer Moore

Wales striker Moore is wanted by a glut of clubs, including the Bluebirds, Middlesbrough, Derby County and Stoke City

By Paul Abbandonato

Sunday 9th August 2020

Cardiff City's hopes of landing Wales striker Kieffer Moore have been hit by a fresh blow - from their former manager Neil Warnock.

The Middlesbrough boss is said to have slapped in an 11th hour bid to try to tempt Moore to the north-east.

Moore, who is also Neil Harris' number one transfer target, is said to be mulling over his options this weekend to decide which of his many suitors to join.

Stoke, Derby, Preston, QPR and Millwall have also been chasing Moore, who appeared to be veering towards a move to Cardiff.

However, we are told the Bluebirds and Moore still have ground to make up on personal terms. Bluebirds owner Vincent Tan is weighing up his own plans for Cardiff as he considers whether to continue shelling out money, having estimated to have already used £165million of his own money on the Bluebirds.

Harris still hopes to land Moore, but reports Warnock has also joined the hunt will come as an unwelcome distraction to the man who replaced him in the Cardiff hot-seat.

Moore, who stands at 6ft 5in, knows he would be perfectly suited to the direct style of play Warnock adopts.

Harris also feels Moore's stature, and ability on the ball that he has shown with Wales, means he can make the front-man the focal point of his own team.

According to the Northern Echo it has come down to a straight choice of Middlesbrough or Cardiff for Moore, after the two clubs had £2m-plus bids accepted by Wigan.

They say Boro will "make a final push in the next 24 hours and remain hopeful of persuading the Wigan striker to turn down Cardiff City in order to sign on at the Riverside."

Moore has spoken to Harris and Warnock as the tug-of-war breaks out over his future. He is aware the Cardiff or Middlesbrough sides would be built around him.

The Bluebirds remain hopeful that Moore's involvement with Wales, and his love of Cardiff City Stadium, can help sway the day.

He wants to play a big part with Wales at next summer's Euros and shining with Cardiff will put him firmly in the spotlight for Ryan Giggs.

Warnock accepts Cardiff are still favourites to land Moore, but remains hopeful some last minute persuasion can do the trick for Boro.

Warnock is also keen to sign his former Bluebirds ace Junior Hoilett, who has entered the final year of his contract with Cardiff.

Harris has made Hoilett a key figure during his time in charge of the Bluebirds, but could opt to cash in and utilise Josh Murphy and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing as his first-choice wingers next season.

If so, he would also be in the market for another wide man this summer.

Wigan striker 'making straight choice' between Boro and Cardiff

Other bids have been knocked back leaving the towering targetman with a decision to make

By Anthony Vickers

Wigan striker Kieffer Moore is deciding between Middlesbrough and Cardiff City, according to reports.

The towering targetman is mulling over his future but with Wigan administrators up against the clock will under pressure to make his choice quickly.

Bids from both Neil Warnock at Boro and his former club Cardiff have been accepted, report the Daily Mail.

They say that the Wales international has already knocked back offers from both QPR and Millwall.

Millwall opening the auction with a £1.8m move and QPR upped the ante with a bid reported as being £2m down and with a possible value close to £2.5m. That was accepted.

But the player is reported to have turned down the prospect of Rangers and other suitors including Stoke,Derby and Preston have yet to follow up their interest.

That could leave the bustling 6ft 5in frontman, who turned 28 yesterday, with a straight choice between Boro and South Wales.

And, say the Mail, he is taking his time to make his decision.

However, Wigan administrators are under pressure to raise cash quickly to pay creditors and wage bills to head off a possible second penalty.

The club were relegated after being whacked with a 12 point penalty for going into administration.

And they face a possible 15 point deduction if they default on wages and paying their bills.

Moore's Wigan teammate Joe Gelhardt is expected to finalise his £900,000 move to Leeds on Monday.

Cardiff were last week reported to be in poll position for the 10 goal striker with Wales Online suggesting it would be beef up his international hopes.

"It seems Moore has set his sights on moving to Cardiff City Stadium, which has become like a second home to him after some excellent displays at international level," they said.

“Moore knows a move to Cardiff, where he will be under the spotlight of Welsh fans and the Welsh media, will enhance his prospects of continuing to play for Wales."

Elsewhere Boro look set to lose out on another two way transfer tussle.

Warnock is said to be keen on Spurs midfielder Luke Amas who impressed on loan at QPR last term.

But according to Talksport the busy box-to-boxer is set to sign for a second season at Loftus Road.

Seems strange as Middlesbrough already have two top strikers! Also a bit of a worry if Warnock fancies Moore after the ones he signed for us, Madine,Bogle,Sala,Ward,Vasell and Glatzel, well over 30m wasted!

Boro boss Neil Warnock is aiming to land a double transfer blow on his former club Cardiff City.

The Middlesbrough manager hopes to beat City to the signing of Wigan striker Kieffer Moore and is pushing for a swift resolution to that tug-of-war.

And Warnock is also understood to be trying to prise away Bluebirds flanker fixture Junior Hoilett.

Towering targetman Moore, 28 on Saturday, was reported to be making his mind up over which club to join after Wigan's administrators accepted bids from both clubs of around the £2m mark.

Other Championship outfits including Derby, Stoke and Preston are said to be watching developments while a bid from QPR was accepted but the player knocked back that option.

The 6ft 5in frontman is understood to have talked to both bosses in recent days about their plans for him as he weighs up his future.

Not sure it's fair that Salah is on that list, we'll never know how good he could have been for us and I think Glatzel gets alot of unnecessary stick. Definitely deserves another season but the rest, yes can't really argue
