Cardiff City dealt another Lee Tomlin injury setback as Neil Harris admits they need to sign back-up

The Bluebirds talisman will be unfit to start this weekend's clash against Nottingham Forest after a 'frustrating week'

Tomlin could still make the bench.

Cardiff City have been dealt another Lee Tomlin injury setback ahead of this weekend's Championship fixture with Nottingham Forest, with Neil Harris admitting they need to sign back-up in that area of the pitch as a matter of priority, but there will be no money signings. We will have to sign another loan player.

It was thought that, after struggling to regain his fitness throughout pre-season, he was working his way back to full health nicely, coming off the bench for a cameo appearance in the 2-0 defeat by Sheffield Wednesday last weekend.

However, Neil Harris has confirmed the attacker will not be considered to start this weekend's fixture, which appears to have further informed the manager's transfer priorities moving forward.

NEIL HARRIS:

"He’s not much further down the line, fitness-wise," Harris said of Tomlin's recovery.

"He is going to be on the training pitch [on Friday], but he has had a frustrating week, fitness-wise.

"He is not going to be fit enough to start the game on Saturday, without giving too much away, team-selection wise.

"We have just got to be patient and get him up to speed as quickly as we can but in a safe environment where we don’t rule him out for a long period.

"We just have to be respectful to Tommo and appreciate he has been out for a long period and let him heal in his own time and look forward to having him for the rest of the season, hopefully."

When pressed on what moves we can expect from Cardiff in the transfer window, Harris said: "Am I looking for a little more creativity in the final third? Yeah I think so.

"Firstly, let’s be respectful to the rest of the squad, we have got some good players who can be creative in the final third.

"Would I like some more strength in depth in creativity or a forward area? Yeah, I think it’s safe to say we are looking at the top end of the pitch, that end product, the business-end of the pitch.

"It’s difficult to find someone at the right value, so we will be looking to loan a player.”

"Would I like to add to the squad? Yes I would like to add to the squad, but we also have to make sure we work within my financial constraints."

Wales flyer Gareth Bale appears to be inching closer to a return to Tottenham Hotspur on a season-long loan deal. As far as adding an attacker to the ranks goes, they don't come much better than that.

But he would have fit the bill perfectly for what Harris is looking for. Were there any joking conversations about bringing the Whitchurch boy home?

"It did cross my mind!," Harris said, tongue firmly placed in his cheek.

"If he needs a loan where Real Madrid don’t need any money then we would be a great option for him, near his home.

"But looks like Tottenham have just nicked him in front of us, with £300,000 more to contribute than we have… a week!"

The Bluebirds have signed Kieffer Moore on a permanent deal as well as Liverpool loanee Sheyi Ojo to bolster their attacking line.

In defence, they have added only Jordi Osei-Tutu on loan from Arsenal at right back, but there is still a dearth of options available should the youngster become unavailable.

And while Harris admitted right back is an area in which he could further add to in this window, it is the attacking third where he wants to strengthen most urgently.

"Jordi needs to settle, find his feet, but we have seen glimpses already of what a player he is going to be. The same with Dion [Sanderson] last year.

"Leandro Bacuna has played there, he is not an out-and-out right back but showed he is capable, so if need be, Greg Cunningham and Joe Bennett can fill in.

"But strength in depth-wise, it might be an area which we consider, but creativity at the moment is certainly where we are focusing."

I believe it's the same injury he had at the end of the season, but was played where he could,in order to make the play offs, and he hadn't fully recovered back then, and has probably aggravated it if anything,Harris did say back then,he had to be carefully managed,as his injury was complicated or complex? We definitely need a guy of similar ilk imho,as he could be touch and go for a while. :old: :bluebird:

I don’t think Tomlin has ever been fit otherwise he would have been a Premier League Player, however he can change a game when he comes on in the last 30 minutes!

If all of our parachute payments are going on keeping the club going surely we could scout a playmaker on loan from somewhere in the world just one player.

BLUESINCE 62

Have a word our scouts or scout seem to be missing a trick we need a camarassa type attacking mid fielder.

Ben Watson is available as he’s without a club since leaving Forest, ideal cover, plenty of experience too
