3 Cardiff City players we can see leaving the Cardiff City Stadium by Friday October 16th

18/09/2020

It’s been a shaky first few weeks of the season for Cardiff City, who have tasted defeat in both of their opening fixtures.

They were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by League One side Northampton Town before Sheffield Wednesday beat them 2-0 last weekend.

With just under a month left of the transfer window, Neil Harris may feel that this early wobble justifies some more movement in the market – both in and out.

With that in mind, we’ve outlined three players we can see leaving the Cardiff City Stadium by Friday October 16th…

Greg Cunningham

The left-back spent last season away on loan with Blackburn Rovers, though that was cut short due to injury.

Cunningham has been linked with an exit already this summer, with former club Bristol City touted with an interest.

With Joe Bennett ahead of him in the pecking order and young Joel Bagan included in some matchday squads already this term, the 29-year-old’s days in the Welsh capital could be numbered.

Aden Flint

The towering central defender seemed to fall out of favour under Neil Harris last season and is yet to make an appearance in the current campaign.

The problem with Flint is, is high wages.

At 31, you feel he will want to be somewhere that he can be playing regular first-team football and you’d question whether that will happen at Cardiff this term.

Given his experience and the threat he poses in both boxes, if Flint does push to leave there should be interested parties.

The centre-back could certainly be on his way out of the Welsh capital before October 16th, particularly if he remains out of the team.

Tom Sang

The 21-year-old is one of a number of young players that have been moved up to the first-team squad this season, which shows how highly rated he is at Cardiff.

A product of the Manchester United academy, Sang is a defensive midfielder and that’s where his problems may come in terms of opportunities.

Harris is spoilt for choice in the centre of the park and it wouldn’t be a surprise if we see the Bluebirds look to loan the midfielder out to get him some regular first-team football.

Cardiff City: Neil Harris aims to strengthen attacking options

BBC

18 September 2020

Manager Neil Harris believes Cardiff City must strengthen their attacking options before the transfer window closes on 16 October.

Cardiff added Wales striker Kieffer Moore and Liverpool winger Sheyi Ojo ahead of the new Championship season.

But as attacking midfielder Lee Tomlin continues to battle for full fitness, Harris feels there is work to do.

"For me creativity, goals, end product, is a must for us within the squad," he said.

"Let's be respectful to the rest of the squad. We have got some good players who can be creative in the final third.

"Would I like a bit more strength in depth in the forward area? I think it's safe to say we are looking at that top end of the pitch, for a little bit more end product.

"But we know that's the business end of the pitch and it's difficult to find (players) at the right value. I would like to add to the squad but have to do it within my financial constraints."

"Regarding money transfers its a no, we will be looking for a loan player."

Cardiff lost winger Albert Adomah when his loan from Nottingham Forest ended in June, while Danny Ward has left for Huddersfield and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing's contract was terminated earlier this month.

Beaten in the play-off semi-finals last season, the Bluebirds began the new league campaign with a home defeat to Sheffield Wednesday having lost 3-0 at Northampton in the Carabao Cup.

Harris says mindset is key ahead of Saturday's trip to Nottingham Forest.

"It's been a little bit of sloppy mentality in the first week, a little bit in training as well," he said.

"That's not having a pop at my players, not at all. I think we quickly have to move past a brilliant last season to this year making sure our mentality is 100% spot on individually and collectively.

"The clean sheet mentality, the mindset to go that extra yard, to outrun your opponent, to outfight your opponent. That's been a big talking point this week."

Harris says the influential Tomlin, who came off the bench in the Sheffield Wednesday defeat, will not be fit enough to start at Forest.

Give Sang a chance here

We are not looking for a left back! So Cunningham will stay and he can also cover centre back.

Flint will stay, Bamba will be the one to go.

Sang may go out on loan?

The most likely to leave will be Bamba, Hoilett and one of the four midfield players!
