What's the team news :bluebird: :bluebird: :bluebird:

Cardiff City will be boosted by the possible return of Lee Tomlin for tonight's clash with Derby County.

The playmaker missed the clash with Bournemouth owing to suspension before struggling with a groin issue for the weekend draw with Middlesbrough.

However, manager Neil Harris said he has been extremely pleased with Tomlin's progress over the last week and the 31-year-old could feature tonight. He might even play alongside Harry Wilson for the first time, an exciting prospect indeed.

Elsewhere, Filip Benkovic is set to miss this one, having played in the Bluebirds' under-23s match against Hull City yesterday as he tries to work his way up to match sharpness. He could come into the fray for QPR this weekend.

The Bluebirds are still sweating on the fitness of Jordi Osei-Tutu, who limped off again with a hamstring injury on the weekend, and Joe Bennett, who is also struggling with a hamstring problem.

Both were due to be assessed yesterday ahead of tonight's clash.

Isaac Vassell is still the long-term absentee for City, while Greg Cunningham is also out of contention for a few more weeks with his own hamstring issue..

Derby will be without Wayne Rooney for the clash, with the former Manchester United and England star in quarantine until Friday.

About Derby County

Derby County Football Club is a professional association football club based in Derby, Derbyshire, England. The club competes in the EFL Championship, the second tier of English football, and has played its home matches at Pride Park Stadium since 1997.

Notable for being one of the 12 founder members of the Football League in 1888, Derby County is one of only 10 clubs to have competed in every season of the English football league system, with all but four of those being in the top two divisions. In 2009, the club was ranked 137th in the top 200 European football teams of the 20th century by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics.

The club was founded in 1884 by William Morley, as an offshoot of Derbyshire County Cricket Club. Its competitive peak came in the 1970s when it twice won the First Division and competed in major European competitions on four occasions, reaching the European Cup semi-finals as well as winning several minor trophies. Additionally, the club was a strong force in the interwar years, winning the 1945–46 FA Cup.

The club's home colours have been black and white since the 1890s. The team gets its nickname, The Rams, to show tribute to its links with the First Regiment of Derby Militia, which took a ram as its mascot. Additionally, the club also adopted the song "The Derby Ram" as its regimental song. They have a long-standing rivalry with nearby club Nottingham Forest, with whom they contest the East Midlands derby.

Derby County have the worst home record in the Championship so far this season.

Three games and three defeats with a minus-seven goal difference is worse than that of Wycombe Wanderers and Preston North End, who are also pointless after three matches.

The Rams have lost to Reading (2-0), Blackburn Rovers (4-0) and Watford (1-0), and striker Martyn Waghorn says the players are fired up to start putting things right when Cardiff City visit Pride Park Stadium on Wednesday.

"You pride yourself on your home form and home wins are crucial throughout the course of the season," Waghorn said.

"We know it is different without the fans at the minute. The way we played at Forest, with the energy and the enthusiasm, we have got to take that into the next game.

"We have got great quality players going forward and a solid base at the back now, so it gives us as forward players a bit more license to go and do what we can do best with a bit of freedom."

Looking forward to this game (subject to weather conditions, of course) and feel it is one City can win...

Derby appear to be in a bit of trouble so far this season and we need to press them from the start

Sems reports that they would struggle without promotion last season may have some mileage...? :ayatollah:

Arsenal loanee hobbles off for the 2nd game in a row

Oct 27, 2020

Jordi Osei-Tutu picked up an injury against Preston North End. It was particularly disappointing given how well he was playing at the time, earning rave reviews from the fans.

As a result, the Arsenal loanee missed the game against Bournemouth in midweek. However, it initially looked like good news for his recovery on Saturday against Boro, as he returned to the squad and the starting lineup.

Unfortunately, Osei-Tutu’s appearance went almost exactly the same way as the last one.

“had boundless energy on the flank and looked cool and calm in possession, rarely [putting] a foot out of place”. But all the same, he hobbled off after 67 minutes, with the club Twitter account confirming he couldn’t continue.

Both the club and City boss Neil Harris stayed quiet on the injury after the game, making no mention of the problem.

Harris and his medical staff obviously need some time to assess it, but you’d imagine they also want to avoid questions about why they brought him back so quickly if he wasn’t ready.

We’ll just have to hope they haven’t caused any more serious damage by playing him again so quickly. Cardiff City face Derby County away on Wednesday, followed by QPR away on Saturday.

Harris today said: "We have given Jordi Osei-Tutu a couple of days rest and will asses Jordi tomorrow."

Derby County assistant Liam Rosenior: "[On the poor home record lost every home game this season] You can't look in the past, you have to look in the future. It's a really difficult time for everyone.

"Our home record last season was outstanding and we had 28,000 fans in. It goes to show how important the supporters are.

"It doesn't hurt anyone as much as me that fans can't be allowed in. But we need to focus on what we now do at home.

"I know Cardiff are a very, very good team at this level but if we perform at our levels we can win the game.

"We've got a big game against a good side on Wednesday. Neil Harris has done a fantastic job there, it's going to be a real physical challenge.

"I saw them play in the play-off semi-final at Fulham and they were really unfortunate not to go through to the final. They have got a physical element, long throws and set plays, but they've got Harry Wilson, they've got [Sheyi] Ojo, they've got really good wide players with quality.

Match facts

Derby have lost one of their last six home league meetings with Cardiff (D2 L3), losing 4-3 at Pride Park in February 2017.

Cardiff City are looking to win consecutive Championship matches against Derby for the first time since April 2012 (a run of four).

Derby County have lost each of their last five home games in the Championship, failing to score in the last three. The Rams last suffered six straight defeats on home soil between October 2007 and January 2008 when in the Premier League (7).

Since Neil Harris took charge of Cardiff City in November last year, the Bluebirds have won more away games than any other Championship side (11 including play-offs).

Cardiff boss Neil Harris has won each of his last three Championship meetings with Derby, having won none of his first three against the Rams before this (D2 L1).

The key Cardiff City player who could return from injury against Derby County

The Bluebirds travel to Pride Park for the Championship clash on Wednesday evening as both teams look to climb up the table

DERBY LIVE

Wednesday 28th October 2020

Cardiff City manager Neil Harris has confirmed that forward Lee Tomlin could play a part in the Championship game against Derby tonight (Wednesday).

The Rams host the Bluebirds at Pride Park, as they look to build on Friday night’s 1-1 draw with East Midland rivals Nottingham Forest.

That result means that Phillip Cocu’s team are searching for just their second win of the season as they look to climb out of the bottom three places in the Championship table.

Striker Martyn Waghorn made a goalscoring return in his first start of the season against Forest, and provides more options up front for Cocu, especially with Wayne Rooney still self-isolating.

But Derby aren’t the only ones to be given an injury boost ahead of the game against Cardiff, with Harris confirming that Tomlin could make his return.

"Tommo has been on the training pitch, that’s a real positive for us," he said in his pre-match press conference (via WalesOnline ).

"We certainly hope for some game involvement this week."

And he confirmed that Tomlin could make the bench against Derby.

“Possibly. What we can’t do is push Tommo too soon and he falls off the edge of a cliff,” he added.

"We have to make sure we are sensible with him, but we are really pleased with how he’s gone the last seven days really.

"Having him back on the training pitch and pain free is the main thing."

Tomlin has missed the last three league games through suspension and injury.

Left-back Joe Bennet has also missed the same number of games, and Harris has also said that a return vs Derby could also be a possibility for the full-back.

“Yeah, there’s a chance. Again, another one who needs to be on the training pitch today,” he said.

"But in his absence, I thought Joel was excellent and will go strength to strength.

"I’m hopeful of having Joe back in the group. You want your important players as well."

One player who is not likely to play is defender Filip Benkovic, who is on loan from Leicester City, with the centre-back building up his match fitness with Cardiff’s U23 side after missing most of pre-season with the Foxes.

Now speaking ahead of Cardiff’s clash at Derby, Neil Harris labels Harry Wilson a maverick.

Harry creates chances, has great free-kick deliveries, great corners and he gets lots of shots off. He is a handful to play against. I enjoy seeing him every day in training, he has been a breath of fresh air within the group personality wise and he will just go from strength to strength. It’s great to have two maverick players – Lee Tomlin and Harry Wilson – players who play with a real air of freedom on the training pitch every day and do things with the football I could not do as a player.

Have to disagree with Harris regarding Rooney. He is slow and overweight now, I would prefer him playing than not.

Hes not the player he used to be and it would suit our midfield playing against him

Rams hoping for first win

They're not so different these two, at least when it comes to home form anyway.

Cardiff might be flying on the road, but things haven't quite clicked at the Cardiff City Stadium.

At the same time, Derby have struggled to really make an impact anywhere so far this term, with no wins or draws at home this season.

Quizzed on his side's home form, Rams assistant Liam Rosenior admitted: "[On the poor home record] You can't look in the past, you have to look in the future. It's a really difficult time for everyone.

"Our home record last season was outstanding and we had 28,000 fans in. It goes to show how important the supporters are.

I’d love to be proven wrong but I don’t see any creativity in the starting line up unfortunately. I assume Tommo and Wilson are unavailable due to knocks. Need a big game from Moore today as he’s not been up to much recently.

Early long throw for Will Vaulks, but it's cleared. Leandro Bacuna's ball back in is too close to Roos and the keeper collects under no pressure.

Nice little period of possession for City down the right, but it comes to nothing. Morrison tries to switch it left with a diagonal ball to Bennett, but it's wayward and a throw-in to the hosts.

City fashion a break on the left-hand side and it's quick. Bennett is released and he tries to stand a ball up into the box. But again it's too close to the keeper and is collected.

Derby are patient in the build up and Lawrence finds the ball on the corner of the box. The Wales international flashes his chance across the face of goal, though. Goal kick.
