Cardiff City’s Max Watters has been tipped to kick on after securing a move to the Championship, according to Sky Sports commentator David Stowell.

The Bluebirds completed a deal to bring to 21-year-old to South Wales over the weekend after a spectacular run of form for Crawley Town.

Watters only moved to the League Two side last year but scored 16 goals in 18 appearances for the Reds – a goalscoring run that alerted a number of clubs to his services.

After being released by Doncaster Rovers it seemed that a career at the highest level was unlikely, but according to Stowell, Watters has benefitted from finding his ‘spark’ further down the football pyramid like another popular EFL figure.

Speaking on the Sky Sports EFL Podcast, Stowell said: “Maidstone had offered a contract to him but Crawley liked what they saw and came in and did the deal.

“Sometimes you just need a spark to get a career going.

“I remember Jamie Mackie was in the youth set-up with Wimbledon, got caught up in the whole name change to MK Dons and went to Exeter in the conference.

“His career was drifting but then scored nine goals in 10 games and got a move to Plymouth in the Championship and never looked back.

“Of course he ended up in the Premier League and had a terrific career.

“Sometimes that run of form just allows you to step up a level or even skip a few levels and jump even higher.”

The Verdict

It’ll be very interesting to see how Max Watters gets on with Cardiff City.

His goalscoring exploits this term have been nothing short of sensational and supporters will surely be hoping that he can continue that form for the Bluebirds.

Given that results have been mixed for Neil Harris’s side, the hope will be that he can hit the ground running and help the club to some crucial victories in the Championship.

Cardiff City Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of forward Max Watters.

£200,000 with add ons of up to £500,000.

The 21-year-old joins from Crawley Town and has signed a contract with the Bluebirds until the summer of 2024.
