Thursday 17th February 2021

MICK McCARTHY:

TAN any conversations with him?

I ring him up and have a chat with him!

I’ve had two or three positive chats after games to say ‘well done’ and I say ‘thank you’ and have a chat.

Vincent owns the club and if he wants to call me up, so be it. So far it’s just ‘good luck, all the best!’

Mick McCarthy

Have there been any chat with staying on to you?

MICK McCARTHY:

No, I’ve not looked for any chat.

We are going well. With that, if I’m going well, if they want to keep me, great. If not, I’m sure something else will come up.

All I’m bothered about is beating Preston. Then we move on to Bournemouth. If you win games your just rewards come.

Mick McCarthy

Jonny Williams has been training all week :thumbright: :bluebird:

Joe Ralls?

His ankle is still not right. He’s not fit for tomorrow, I doubt Wednesday. Might be Middlesbrough, might be Derby.

Mick McCarthy

MICK McCARTHY:

Team news ahead of Preston

None of the lads who played have trained. They are playing and recovering because of the games.

Josh had a knock, Kieffer a bit of a knock, that’s it. They were the two.

They are all getting rubs, massages, stretching and recovering. I’ll see better tomorrow.

Jonny Williams trained, Sheyi Ojo trained, so we’ve got those guys out again. :bluebird:

Mick McCarthy

They available?

Yes, they trained fully today, they’ll be OK.

Mick McCarthy

Joe Ralls will miss out once again with his ankle problem, with Middlesbrough or even potentially Derby County the return date for him.

Junior Hoilett is still unavailable due to his calf issue, too.

Meanwhile, talismanic striker Kieffer Moore and in-form winger Josh Murphy are also doubtful for the weekend after suffering knocks in the midweek win over Luton Town.

Surprised by the start?

Yeah, all of me!

I know what I do, TC, what we do together, what we are capable of.

We have a good record in this league.

There is no magic wand you wave, just this is how we are with people, we’ve got the best out of people.

We have got a shift out of everyone. It’s up to them to do it.

James Collins missed a header after 15 minutes, we were 2-0 down against Barnsley, but it shows together and resilience.

MICK McCARTHY:

Packed schedule?

Yep, that’s just the way it is.

The beauty of winning games is we don’t have to go on the training ground and try a different shape, different variations.

Some of the big lads are taking a real pounding, it’s Saturday-Tuesday, we travel up to Middlesbrough then, that’ll be a big week for us.

No player prefers training to playing…

No! I’ve come across loads of players better in training than playing! I’m not too enamoured by them.

You just want to play games.

It’s a results game. If game after game you are not winning games, believe me, that is bloody tough.

Thankfully, we are winning at the moment.

MICK McCARTHY:

Preston have a really good away record - a threat?

That’s every week!

I don’t think it matters if you’re home or away if I’m honest.

When you’re away from home, you travel the day before and you’re in game mode from Friday, in the hotel, you’re wired for that game.

Travelling might even have a bit of an advantage. You’re on the bus and you’re ready for the game, already thinking about it.

It’s up to us to make sure we get another home result.

Six points behind Bournemouth, looking up?

I’d sooner be pecking at their backsides than having mine pecked at!

Those four wins on a bounce, you’ve got to keep going.

If you lower your guard and you’re thinking you’re looking like play-offs, I just say ‘hold on, let’s just keep picking up points’.

Is that the message to your players?

Sometimes, you guys will ask us and we probably haven’t looked at the table.

Where we are is where we are.

If we lost at Bristol, we were fourth-bottom that day, so I prefer looking at it now.

MICK McCARTHY:

Contract talks, involved in any of that? Bennett, Hoilett, Harris?

It’s a pertinent question, a good question.

I’m fully aware of what’s going on. I would be saying to Ken and Mehmet and Vincent who I think, in my opinion should stay.

If I’m not staying it makes no difference!

I’ve already looked at the kids and will continue doing so.

But at the minute, everyone seems to be happy enough.

I may be able to affect it later on, I might not.

Here's what Preston manager Alex Neil has had to say about Cardiff City this morning...

"They have gone back to a method of playing that they were used to before, Mick has gone in and simplified it and they’ve got guys who got them in to the Play-Offs last year, they’ve certainly got the players to be at that top end of the table

“We will focus on ourselves and how we can approach the game with what we’ve got available to give us the best chance of winning the game.”

Lee Tomlin had a runout with 23s, how’s he looking?

He did fine. I spoke to him this morning, he feels good.

His programme was to be in the gym today and training Saturday and Sunday with a view to playing the under-23s.

Yes (he’s on course).

No fans, what’s it like not having fans shouting your name?

Is this in either section? There are two ways of looking at it!

How quick is it to get from dog to god! Not long!

I love the fans being in for the noise and the encouragement the players get. The atmosphere.

I’ve had my name shouted in all different variations.

But I want them back in because it’s their game, it’s their club.

Some spectacular goals this week…

Yes, Harry, the game opened up a bit. It was a fabulous diagonal ball from Perry to Aden Flint, who nodded it down to Harry.

It was a fabulous goal.
We were joking with Vaulksy. Someone said it was a bit of quality, I said what ‘the somersault?!’ I almost fined him for that!

I was ribbing him a bit.

He’s been brilliant, Vaulksy. Real leadership, getting the ball, disturbing them. He’s been fabulous. I’m really pleased with him.

Re: MICK McCARTHY:

Just 10 days ago, the Bluebirds' chances of promotion were placed at 40/1. Now, though, after wins over Rotherham, Coventry City and Luton Town, their odds have slashed by more than half to 18/1.

Cardiff currently have the shortest odds of any team currently not in the top six, alongside Barnsley, who have a game in hand on those above them, and Neil Warnock's Middlesbrough, both of whom are also priced at 18/1.

MICK McCARTHY:

A little more out of Harry WIlson?

That’s unfair on Harry.

I was asked if he had earned my trust. I’d only just met him.

He earned my trust by training and he’s been different class.

If you’ve lost seven games on the bounce, I think it’s highly unlikely Harry WIlson will lift the squad, he might have a moment of brilliance, but it requires everyone.

The team isn’t playing as well and it affects different players.

He’s a brilliant loan player. Wherever he’s been he has had an effect on every team.

There is real quality from him and a good personality.

But when it’s going wrong, maybe it’s the Sean Morrison’s, Aden Flint’s, the lads here who are signed. Maybe at one time they would have gone out for a meal or a beer.

Are Kieffer and Murphy doubts for the weekend?

I'll know tomorrow. I'll know better [then] and will see how they all feel. I'm not concerned because I don't worry about things I can't do anything about. I'll find out tomorrow.

Harry Wilson produced the piece of magic to get City on their way, but while McCarthy acknowledged the Liverpool loanee's sprinkle of magic stardust, he thought the midfield duo were top class against Luton.

MICK McCARTHY:

"Of course, that's why you have him in the team," McCarthy said of Wilson.

"We have got the other guys. The three big centre backs who were battling away against their two strikers.

"I thought Vaulksy and Marlon Pack were excellent in there.

"Then you've got the exciting ones who put the bells and whistles on all that hard work and that's what he did

It won’t be easy to force his way in?

MICK McCarthy:

It won’t. There is no special pass for anyone.

The way Harry Wilson is playing now. He is creating goals too, with his shot that went for a corner kick.

He’ll be hard to shift, he’s been great.

It’s good, someone like Harry in your team and someone like Jonny wanting to get in the team.

This is what I like about Mick mcCarthy, he just says it as he sees it....

Quote: "All I’m bothered about is beating Preston. Then we move on to Bournemouth. If you win games your just rewards come"

No stress to worries right now and it helps keep things on a level

Neil Harris should have learned that trait but it seems (Lord forbid) we go into a 'dip of form', Mick McCarthy knows all too well that many will turn faster than Saturday's milk left on the doorstep until Monday (for those who remember such events) ;)

Take it game by game and focus minds on that first and foremost :ayatollah:
