Sean Morrison posts grim picture which explains exactly why he needed to 'pop a few painkillers' against Swansea City

The Bluebirds captain put in a herculean effort in Cardiff City's South Wales derby win and has the battle wounds to show for it

Cardiff City captain Sean Morrison has posted a photo of his battle scars from the South Wales derby - and it may go some way to explaining why he needed those painkillers to carry on during the victory over Swansea City.

The Bluebirds skipper went down on more than one occasion during the clash and needed treatment from City's medical staff.

He said after the match that he felt as though he pulled his calf throughout the course of the match, but a fresh photo has emerged which has shed light on another agonising injury.

Morrison's fiancée, Stacey Ward, uploaded a picture of his Achilles, with a toe-curlingly painful-looking blister on his heel.

The photo was accompanied with the caption: "And to think you've just played 90 minutes with that on your ankle. How you do it I'll never know."

Morrison gave his all for the cause and was faultless throughout. It was a true captain's performance and playing through that pain had no bearing on the centre half's stellar display.

And it was plain to see just how much it meant to Morrison, who let out an almighty roar towards the press box when he walked off the pitch, during his passionate post-match interview.

SEAN MORRISON:

"I think I pulled my calf after about 50 minutes," he said to Sky Sports after the game. "So I popped a few painkillers and got on with it.

"But look the young lad who came in at right-back Tom Sang, Browny (Ciaron Brown) next to Flinty (Aden Flint). Joe Ralls out of position in left wing-back. We dug in today. This is what Cardiff City is all about."

He added: "We owe the fans this one. The last three derbies, we've been way off it. Way, way off it. Lost two, drew one.

"We know how much this means to the fans. So that was for all the fans that couldn't be here today. All of them at home watching on tele. That was for them."

The result puts Cardiff firmly in the frame for the play-offs this season, and continues an incredible turnaround under Mick McCarthy.

Cardiff are now four points adrift of sixth heading into the international break, and Morrison says the side will be fully focused on a big run of games over the coming weeks, adding that 75 points is now the target for this team.

"From where we were when he [McCarthy] first came in, if you'd said that we had a chance of the play-offs, people would've laughed. We've given ourselves an opportunity. That's what we've done," he said.

"Three points today is massive on that journey. I think we've got eight games after the international break. Some big games in there. Teams above us, teams around us.

"We just need to pick up as many points as possible and get to that 75-point mark. Don't worry about anyone else. We worry about ourselves and see where it takes us."

Took him a few years to settle here but he's a worthy captain, one of the best center backs in the league and I think he will go on and get even better in the coming years.
