" Wales begin World Cup qualifying with a defeat "

Wed Mar 24, 2021 9:43 pm

We have begun our World Cup 2022 Qualifying Campaign with a 3-1 defeat in Belgium.

The better team won in the end and there can be no real complaints.

We made a good start when Harry Wilson finished off a brilliant team move.

Kevin De Bruyne equalised with a good finish from the edge of the box.

Thorgan Hazard headed in from close range to give Belgium the lead before half time.

As we tried to get back into the game, Belgium got their third goal. Chris Mepham brought down Dries Mertens in the box and Romelu Lukaku made no mistake from 12 yards.

Ignoring the pointless friendly against Mexico, we have another qualifier against Czech Republic on Tuesday at CCS - that is a much bigger game for us.

Czech Republic won 6-2 in Estonia tonight.

After our goal, Belgium were all over us first half and although their second was a tad lucky with the slip, they probably deserved to be ahead. Second half until there pen I thought we were the better side tbh and were hunting down an equaliser (although we didn't really trouble their keeper mid you) but after the pen it was all over.

Ah well onwards and upwards and at least Harry and Kiefer came through unscathed.

I thought overall it was more than a decent performance by us. Before the game I knew Belgium were up there somewhere but didn't realise they were the world Number 1's. Watching them in the 1st half, after we scored a fantastic goal, you can see why.

Whatever Page said at half time, it did the trick, as we came right out of the blocks and put them under serious pressing pressure and looked the better side for the first 15-20 minutes.

Their 3rd was a game killer but no complaints, they deserved the win but if we play like that in every game we will be fine.

Can't wait to hear all the media hype today for the biggest game of the week......England v the Mighty San Marino!

Belgium lay recent Wales bogey with a win sealed by Romelu Lukaku’s 2nd half penalty. Defeat but signs of promise, notably a colossal display from Joe Rodon, a super goal & more adventure after break. Loss won’t define this World Cup campaign. FT3-1

A chance tonight to have a look at the Swiss away to Bulgaria and Italy home to NI. Both should win comfortably but we should gat an idea of the relative strengths ahead of June. Turkey were very effective last night and even though we were pretty reasonable in defeat to Belgium, its going to be a massive achievement to get out of the group this summer.

No Ramsey, Brookes,Davies, Hennersey or Allen and we put up a reasonable performance against the no 1 ranked team in the world and scored a goal that was world class.
