“ CCFC / How mad was this “

Thu Mar 25, 2021 6:01 pm

ST: Robin Friday (C). He was arrested on arrival in Cardiff for skipping the train fare and stayed up until 5am drinking before his debut, yet still scored 2 despite being up against Bobby Moore.

Robin Friday: Sex, drink and drugs - 'the greatest footballer you never saw' who died of a heroin overdose aged 38

Friday's professional football career lasted just four years. But boy, did he make an impression.

Robin Friday's last significant act on a football pitch was to kick Mark Lawrenson square in the face.

Legend has it, after being sent off, the then- Cardiff forward then broke into Brighton's changing room and defecated in the centre-back's kit bag before leaving the stadium with the game still going on.

Within two months, he'd retired from the game, aged 25. A little over a decade later, he was found dead in his flat, having suffered a heart attack following a suspected heroin overdose. He was 38.

Once described as "the complete centre forward", Friday combined the sublime with the ridiculous, scoring wonder goals, while grabbing his markers' testicles or kissing them on the lips.

Was he that talented though. I saw him play of couple of times in fairly meaningless matches and he did bugger all. Sure he was great for Reading in division four and good for them in the third division. Apart from a couple of iconic games for us he basically did bugger all. Read a book about him recently think it was called Something like Friday the second half and the author reckoned he was well on his way to becoming a fully fledged heroin addict by the end of his spell with us so it's not surprising the performances were well below par.

He might have been talented enough to play at the top level but he was never dedicated enough to put in the effort so no one really knows how good he was.Has to be a suspicion he would have been found out at any level higher then the second tier. The book about him is a good read though because he was a nutter. Rather think this best player you never saw stuff is over sentimental nonsense though.

mostly i agree... apart from the games being meaningless , bar the respite season of our promotion immediately after relegation it was a difficult time supporting the City , a six year relegation battle with it normally going to the wire.. RF was jumped on to be our hero...but truth be told take all the antics out of it and he was about as useful as Ricky Lambert.. he scored 6 in only 21 games for us and as you say bar a game or 2 was poor...

I always remember The Echo headline. Friday signs Thursday to play Saturday.
