This, in my view, is a totally pointless friendly that is only being played because UEFA insist we play three matches during this international window - and we only had two qualifiers to play during this period.

But I've made this topic anyway, if anyone wants to discuss this match.

Our next qualifier is against Czech Republic at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday.

Following our defeat against Belgium in our opening World Cup Qualifying match, Wales host Mexico on Saturday night.

The match at Cardiff City Stadium kicks off at 8pm. It is live on Sky Sports Premier League and S4C.

There has been one change to the squad, with James Lawrence unable to travel to Cardiff. This is because he plays for St Pauli and there are restrictions on travel enforced by Germany. Brandon Cooper has been called up in replacement.

Joe Allen picked up an injury in Belgium and is a doubt to play in the next two matches.

The full squad is below.

Wales squad

Goalkeepers

Wayne Hennessey - Crystal Palace

Danny Ward - Leicester City

Adam Davies - Stoke City

Tom King - Newport County

Defenders

Chris Gunter - Charlton Athletic

Connor Roberts - Swansea City

Ethan Ampadu - Sheffield United

Chris Mepham - AFC Bournemouth

Joe Rodon - Tottenham Hotspur

Brandon Cooper - Swansea City

Neco Williams - Liverpool

Rhys Norrington-Davies - Stoke City

Ben Cabango - Swansea City

Midfielders

Joe Allen - Stoke City

Jonny Williams - Cardiff City

Dan James - Manchester United

Harry Wilson - Cardiff City

Matt Smith - Doncaster Rovers

Joe Morrell - Luton Town

Dylan Levitt - Istra 1961

Brennan Johnson - Lincoln City

Josh Sheehan - Newport County

Forwards

Rabbi Matondo - Stoke City

Hal Robson-Kanu - West Bromwich Albion

Tom Lawrence - Derby County

Tyler Roberts - Leeds United

Gareth Bale - Tottenham Hotspur

Kieffer Moore - Cardiff City

A pointless friendly and I hope Kiefer, Johnny or Harry don’t have any part of this match purely because of a risk of injury as we need them at Cardiff City for our final 8 game run in. Kiefer and Harry especially need a rest anyway.
I’m also a bit annoyed that Brandon Cooper has been called up in place of James Lawrence, I think we are ok on the defender side, we should’ve called up Will Vaulks, (imho he should be in the squad anyway), as Joe Allen is injured and probably won’t be available for the Czech qualifying game. I really don’t know what more Vaulks can do to prove he is worthy of a squad place at least. Oh well

I agree with all of you above.

Are we actually bring forced to play the game by? If so that needs to be looked at surely, what would the consequences be if the FAW said they were only going to play the two qualifiers during the window and not the friendly? Does anyone know?

I'm pretty sure the UEFA line is that nation with only two games in an international window are "actively encouraged" to play a friendly in the same period.

Which is their way of telling us to play a friendly.

Friendlies are a chance to give fringe players a game to see if they are capable of stepping up ? Giggs one of our few World class players however was always criticised for Ferguson not allowing him to play in many friendlies! Ramsey and Bale however seem to get away with it?

I'm confused with that team. Seems to be a completely different set up.

Dan James and Harry Wilson not in the squad, but no reports of either of them being injured.

It was also said that James Lawrence wouldn't be with the squad for the next two games because of travel restrictions in Germany.

easy one to make as there are not too many players youd think of as defenders named

Wow, stunning again from Wales as the Cardiff City lads combine. Jonny Williams skips brilliantly past his defender and fires in a tremendous cross before Kieffer Moore takes a sublime touch and buries it in the bottom corner. So good to watch - again :bluebird:

It is a fifa stipulation that a friendly must be played in international window if team doesnt have qualifying game.... you'll note some teams have 3 qualifying games while wales got 2... no idea why but thats football for you.. no rationale
for having to play bit countries have no choice...:o

5 team group. Each window one of the teams won't have a game.

In any other season I'd say it's a good thing. Generate funds, test yourself, give the fans a 'big' game, etc. But this season is already so congested.

Currently 1-1 between Czech Republic and Belgium in the other match today in our group.

It is congested ........ but I think its s good thing because Wales can put our a reserve did give players chance to try out system 1st 11 use? Most of players have not had many league games either so far working well against team thats not lost in 18mnths.
Chechs 1-1 with Belgium good score for us so far

Yeah, saw the name Lawrence and made an assumption it was James for some reason.

Even though it had a "T" before the name Lawrence
