Kieffer Moore shines, Liverpool stars impress but Arsenal loanee frustrates - Cardiff City season player ratings so far

SATURDAY 27 MAR 2021

By Glen Williams

It is fair to say it has been a season of two halves and while some have enjoyed a resurgence, others have seen their game-time greatly reduced.

Here, we take a look at how each player has performed to date this term.

Goalkeepers

Alex Smithies 6

Started the season as solid as ever, barring one blip which handed Millwall a soft goal at The Den. Lost his place to Dillon Phillips after a mystery illness.

Dillon Phillips 7

Has done tremendously stepping into the No.1 spot and has been a cornerstone of Cardiff's terrific defensive record of late. Had one error when he let in Watford star Adam Masina's late free-kick, but was a hero with a double penalty save against Preston.

Defenders

Jordi Osei-Tutu 6

What a frustrating loan spell this has been for the Arsenal youngster. Started so brightly, but that hamstring injury has kept him out for six months. He might be back for the last eight games, but he has dropped down the pecking order.

Perry Ng 8

Since signing in January he has become an instant hit with the fans. Has been tremendous on that right-hand side, calm and composed in defence and marauding and threatening in attack. What a signing.

Tom Sang 7

A relatively small sample size, having played only four games, but has looked a real find. Put in a stellar display in the win over Swansea City and now has fans very excited.

Sean Morrison 8

As solid as you like from the skipper, who has gone from strength to strength of late. Has looked a real threat in the opposition box and has slotted into the back-three system superbly. A top season so far.

Aden Flint 8

Few would have thought it, even as recently as January, but Aden Flint has grown to become one of City's most important players. Has become a rock in the middle of that back three and looks a better player with each passing game. Good on him.

Curtis Nelson 7

Started the season a little shakily, it must be said, and had a couple of little blunders which led to goals, but has thrown his body on the line under Mick McCarthy. He has become a blocking machine and adds pace to the centre-backs. Will likely feature after the break.

Ciaron Brown 6

Has been thrown in at the deep end and, credit to him, has adapted well. Has come back from Scotland and played at wing back and centre-back, whichever the situation needs. Has proven himself a decent defender, but needs work with the ball at his feet.

Joe Bennett 7

Another who grew as the season went on, Bennett looked to be back to his attacking best in that wing-back role under McCarthy. Gutting for him that he sustained that ACL injury.

Joel Bagan 6

It should have been a sliding-doors moment for Bagan when Bennett was injured, but he dislocated his shoulder the very next match. But he has acquitted himself well in the eight matches he has played. Exciting things to come from him next season.

Sol Bamba NA

Was Neil Harris' back-up centre back on the bench for the first half of the season and was preferred to Filip Benkovic for the most part. Currently undergoing treatment for cancer and he has the footballing community squarely behind him in his fight.

Midfielders

Marlon Pack 7

Has found his groove in this Cardiff City side now, largely because he is being deployed in a deeper, quarter-back style role. Is now the preferred option alongside the man below.

Will Vaulks 8

Has been the best of the central midfielders this season. Not blessed with the touch or technique of others, but more than makes up for it. Has scored screamers, covered miles and miles and has been at his combative best.

Leandro Bacuna 6

Through no fault of his own, he found himself out of position for most of the season at right-back. He did OK, but didn't cover himself in glory either. Has had fleetingly impressive performances in that No.10 role, including a double against Derby. Solid, nothing more.

Joe Ralls 6

Probably one of the better players in that first half of the season, when City were not doing too well, but after a couple of injuries has been ousted by Pack and Vaulks. Filled in excellently at left-back against Swansea.

Sheyi Ojo 7

Another who was arguably one of the standouts under Neil Harris at the beginning of the campaign but has maybe tailed off a little of late. Has still produced a couple of very good performances of late though. Overall, an impressive loan spell so far.

Junior Hoilett 5

Really struggled to get any sort of form or rhythm at the start of the season, although Harris persisted with him. Has gone completely off the radar since McCarthy took over, having featured only once - the first game in charge up at Barnsley.

Josh Murphy 6

Another who really struggled during the first half of the season, cast aside by Harris. Had a purple patch when McCarthy came, scoring two and assisting three in the manager's first seven games. Has faded slightly since then, though. Still has a big part to play.

Harry Wilson 8

You will have some say they are underwhelmed or disappointed, but Wilson has been largely excellent this season. Has 10 assists, his most ever in a single season, and four goals to his name. Has had to adjust to a system which is not conducive to his style of play, too.

Lee Tomlin 2

Has had five appearances, scored one goal and got a red card. Never really looked anywhere near his best. Underwent groin surgery back in October and is yet to feature since. McCarthy has said he is not fit enough yet, but he could still have some involvement.

Jonny Williams NA

The playmaker signed on deadline day in January but has not been able to force his way into the reckoning. Has had just two cameo appearances off the bench. Needs to have more involvement in the final few games to justify triggering a contract extension.

Rubin Colwill NA

What a season for him, a breakthrough campaign in which he has impressed McCarthy and worked his way into the first-team fold. Has just 14 minutes of action to his name, but he will want more next season, that's for sure.

Forwards

Kieffer Moore 9 (star man)

There is only one player who could be the star man of the season so far and that is Kieffer Moore. What a campaign he is having. Sixteen goals after joining from Wigan last season and is central to how Cardiff play. What a tremendous signing he has proved to be.

Mark Harris 6

Another who is enjoying a breakthrough season. He had a great spell playing alongside Moore during that winning streak before Christmas, but appears to have dropped down the pecking order recently.

Max Watters NA

Just two appearances totalling 71 minutes since his signing from Crawley Town back in January. Has had precious little time to make any impression whatsoever. But has done brilliantly for the under-23s, pressing his case with five goals in three games for them.

The January exits

Robert Glatzel 5

Had an anonymous first half of the season, really, but scored three times in a period of three games in December, having been ousted by Moore. McCarthy made his mind up on him and shipped him on loan to Mainz, where he has two goals in seven games.

Gavin Whyte 5

Did OK when afforded the odd, fleeting appearance under Harris, but he needed to get out for some more game-time. Has done well by all accounts since leaving for Hull City on loan in January.

Greg Cunningham 5

Was blighted by injury in the first half of the season, but did alright when given his chance. Was firmly behind Bennett in the pecking order, though, and with Bagan coming through it was the right decision to let him leave for Preston.

Filip Benkovic NA

What a nightmare of a loan spell. One error-strewn appearance in that horror show at Wycombe and he was sent back to his parent club before heading off once again to OH Leuven in Belgium, where he is yet to make an appearance still.

I think 7 for Dillon is harsh. He has made one mistake since replacing Smities and has been outstanding keeping us in game after game. Should be an 8.

This is exactly what I thought and just to add, I’d change Smithies to a 7 as well.
