Wales youth international and Robbie Savage's son Charlie has signed his first professional contract with Manchester United.

Robbie began his career at Old Trafford 30 years ago as part of the fabled Class of 92, however he failed to make a first-team appearance under Sir Alex Ferguson before going on to enjoy success at Leicester, Birmingham, Blackburn and Derby .

Savage Jnr, though, will hope to go one better than his old man at the Theatre of Dreams.

Charlie, 17, revealed the news on Twitter, going on to thank his family before insisting that the hard work is only just beginning.

"Delighted to have signed my first professional contract Man Utd," he wrote.

Charlie, who joined the United academy in July 2019, has represented Wales at under-17 level.

The central midfielder has been a key figure in United's under-18s side this season, having scored two goals and provided a further five assists in his 17 outings.

And, speaking this week, he revealed he aspires to break into United's first team in the years to come and hopes to emulate the route Scott McTominay has taken.

"The main inspiration for me is Scott — he's the best with us. He comes over to talk to us. He had it difficult in the youth team," he told the Sun.

"He didn't play many matches but he just kept going and he proved it's not always the standout players who make the first team.

"Sometimes it's the players who might have had a back seat but they keep pushing and pushing. Scott, Marcus Rashford and also Brandon Williams all inspire us to improve and move forward."

Savage Snr earned 39 caps for Wales and enjoyed a 17-year professional career.

"My dad doesn't really say too much to me," said Charlie. "He leaves that to the coaches who know better!

"He's there if I need him but he always stresses to me how big a thing it is to play for your country — and that I should be proud of what I've achieved so far.

"We are different. He was tenacious, whereas I'm more of a ball player.

"I think I'm a better finisher than him too! He won't like me saying that — but if I can have half the career he had, then I will be very happy."

Let’s hope he chooses Wales as he was born in England!

Good luck to him, must have some quality about him if he's seen as good enough to sign for a club of that size.

Hopefully he'll end up being another Marcus Rashford instead of another Ravel Morrison.

If he has the work rate and passion of his Dad, then he'll go far.
