Breaking News " Prince Philip dies "

Postby worcester_ccfc » Fri Apr 09, 2021 11:46 am

The Duke of Edinburgh - Prince Philip - has died, Buckingham Palace has said.

A statement from Buckingham Palace said: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle."

The Duke was married to Queen Elizabeth II for more than 70 years and became the longest-serving consort in British history.

Into his 90s he carried out a busy programme of public engagements, reflecting his own charitable interests.

He also travelled around the country supporting the Queen, both on state occasions and royal visits.

For a man of his age he enjoyed relatively good health.

He was taken to hospital over Christmas in 2011 for treatment for a blocked artery.

In 2012 he was admitted to hospital during the Queen's Diamond Jubilee with a bladder infection, and in 2013 had an exploratory operation on his abdomen.

But it was not until May 2017, after carrying out more than 20,000 solo public engagements, that the 96-year-old retired from his own programme of royal duties, occasionally stepping out to support the Queen for big events.

No official details have been released yet about the Duke's funeral, but it is understood he will be given a royal ceremonial funeral rather than a state funeral, in line with his wishes.

The Queen will sign off the final plans in the coming days.

Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark was born on the island of Corfu in 1921.

At the age of 18, the prince joined the Royal Navy as a cadet.

He saw active service during the Second World War, serving in the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean, and was mentioned in despatches for his bravery.

In 1947 he renounced his Greek and Danish royal titles, took on the surname of Mountbatten and became a naturalised British subject ahead of his marriage to Princess Elizabeth.

Their wedding was the first great state occasion after the end of the Second World War.

His commitment to the Queen was unfaltering. He gave up his career in the Navy in order to support her in her role as monarch.

The Queen has described Prince Philip as her "constant strength and stay".

They had four children - Charles, Anne, Andrew and Edward - and he was a much loved grandfather and great-grandfather.

He saw himself as a moderniser within the British monarchy, orchestrating the first royal walkabout - but he was also known for his forthright views and off-the-cuff remarks.

Prince Philip's concern for young people inspired him to create the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme, and he supported more than 800 charities and good causes - focusing on his interests in wildlife conservation, technology and sport.

Since the 1940s Prince Philip was an ever present figure in the life of the UK and leaves behind his own considerable legacy.

I am sorry everyone and feel bad for his family. But I don’t care that he has died, which every living being ever born has done, does now and will do for ever.

Some of the anti-royalist comments on the other board are in disgustingly bad taste. I'm not an avid royalist but the Duke has done more in his lifetime to help other people than those lowlifes would do if they lived a hundred lives.

I am an unashamed Royalist and my heart goes out to our fabulous Queen for the loss of her rock and that is exactly what he was a rock. In my opinion on his worst day he achieved more for the UK than any UK Prime Minister in my lifetime achieved on their best day.

I loved him for his direct nature and of course for many of his brilliant one liners like the quote he gave about his daughter Princess Anne " If it doesn't fart or eat hay she isn't interested"

R.I.P Phillip.

I am 100% a Republican and I don't mourn the loss a member of the Royal Family because frankly they have nothing in common with me and in IMO belong in a bygone time.

However, I do salute a member of the greatest generation who fought for our freedoms during WW2. So on that basis RIP Phillip and thanks for your war efforts.

You should be ashamed of this post.

Not caring that he has passed is your right and you won't be alone but at least do it in a respectful way and just give the thread a wide berth as most others who share your sentiments have.

I have always had total respect for our Queen, if not for some other members of the Royal Family.
Prince Philip proved to be a wonderful husband to her and gave her 100% support.
My condolences to our Queen and RIP Prince Philip.

Succinctly put, Stephen...

Like others above, I am a 'Royalist' and strongly believe they have a massive part to play in an increasingly changing society

Most of us will never have known a time without Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip and it is truly a sad day; particularly as he was so close to his centenary

All I hope is that Prince Harry and Meghan 'Wallace Simpson' Markel lie low for a while and not make their own situation any worse than they have

RIP Philip. You'll be a hard act to follow

People have died and thought for Queen and country with that flag. Respect to all that have served their country !!

We will all die that is is life, as has been said he served his new found country good stuff. What I cannot fathom is the orgy of grief/grief junckies tying their anchor to a flawed individual. Within an hour of his passing people tripping over themselves to state he would have been an admiral, he would have played 1st class cricket, he was a precursor of Attenborough blah blah blah. What is wrong with us ? He was an old man who was of his time, his cock ups were funny so good on him but please release us from this 24 hour relentless bollocks which saturates the media.

Predictably Celtic fans desecrated the silence at the Stade Nonce by letting off fireworks, Scotland’s shame.

What is wrong with you more like. If that's how you feel fine, but let everybody else pay their respects in whatever way they see fit and leave others to see Prince Philips passing in whatever way they see fit. Who made you judge and jury on how someone else should behave or feel?

Nobody is forcing anything on you, I haven't seen a single thing all day, I went for a walk this morning, watched the Football and Grand National this afternoon and having a few beers with a film this evening.

I guess some people like you just love something to moan about congratulation's on your 5 lines of utter drivel.

i assume when you die someone somewhere will grieve... not being well known the media are unlikely to be there but should they turn up no doubt anyone grieving would say nice things about you and recollect certain parts of your life in a good light .. even if your an old man..

It's no secret to some on here that I am no big fan of the Royal Family.

However it disappoints me when I see some making jokes or even celebrating his death. There is absolutely no need for that.

It should be remembered that he fought for this country and, despite my won thoughts on the Royal Family, has continued to serve this country and the head of state for many, many years.

As far as the 24 hour news coverage on Friday goes, the fact that people are complaining about it shows how little they know about the procedure of the country.

When there is a death of a senior royal, it is automatic for all main BBC channels and ITV's main channel to cancel their schedule on that day. Exactly the same will happen when the Queen, Prince Charles, Prince William etc die. I don't know why some people were making a big deal of it - especially in an age when people can watch what they want on Netflix, Amazon, Disney, Apple, Britbox, BBCiPlayer, ITV Hub etc.

Personally I didn't have an issue with it. Whatever my thoughts on them, the Royal Family are the heads of state in the UK and almost certainly always will be. They are also an important historic part of the UK. I am sure there were millions of people around the world who felt a great deal of sadness and were grieving when the Duke's death was announced on Friday.

So, although I can't share that degree of sadness over his death, I respect those who do.

It should also be remembered that he is someone's husband, people's father, people's grandfather and people's great grandfather. No matter how rich or powerful, that should always be respected.

Sincere condolences from me for his death. RIP.
