About Reading

Reading Football Club is a football club based in Reading, Berkshire, England. The team play in the Championship, the second tier of English football. The current manager is Veljko Paunović.

Reading are nicknamed The Royals, due to Reading's location in the Royal County of Berkshire, though they were previously known as The Biscuitmen, due to the town's association with Huntley and Palmers. Established in 1871, the club is one of the oldest teams in England, but did not join The Football League until 1920, and first played in the top tier of English football league system in the 2006–07 season. The club competed in the 2012–13 Premier League season, having gained promotion at the end of the 2011–12 season after winning the Championship, but were relegated after just one season back in the top flight.

The club played at Elm Park for 102 years, from 1896 to 1998. In 1998, the club moved to the new Madejski Stadium, which is named after the club's former chairman Sir John Madejski.

The club holds the record for the number of successive league wins at the start of a season, with a total of 13 wins at the start of the 1985–86 Third Division campaign and also the record for the number of points gained in the professional league season with 106 points in the 2005–06 Football League Championship campaign. Reading then finished eighth in the 2006–07 Premier League, their first-ever season as a top-flight club.

During the 2014–15 FA Cup, the club reached the semi-finals, and reached the quarter finals the season after. They also reached the championship playoff final in the 2016–17 EFL Championship season.

Cardiff have two former Reading players, Leandro Bacuna and Sean Morrison

Sean Morrison has been tremendous this term. It's been telling just how much they have missed him the last three matches, in which they have gained just one point, as he sat out with a calf strain. There is hope he can return for Friday's fixture, though, which will represent a huge boost if that is the case.

Reading are unbeaten in 10 matches against Cardiff in all competitions (W4 D6) since losing 2-0 in the league in November 2015.

That is some stat. Can't be many Championship clubs Cardiff have gone so long without beating

Players you’ve got with you, Sean Morrison, he back?

Mick McCarthy:

No. Sean is injured. He is still out. The lads who have come in have done very well. But you want to look back at games like Swansea, he was outstanding.

He is a great leader of the team and we welcome him back. If and when he is fit to play.

I’ve just seen him on the treatment table, we do expect to see him again this season. He might be a doubt about Brentford.

Gotta go for it. The chance of play offs is practically zero but as long as there is a chance throw the kitchen sink at it

4-2-1-3

Phillips

NG - Nelson - Flint - Sang

Vaulks - Pack

Wilson

Ojo - Moore - Murphy

Bench:
Smithies
Brown
Bacuna
Colwill
Harris
Ralls
Watters
Hoilett
Tomlin

Alternatively could go 3 4 2 1

Phillips

Brown - Flint - Nelson

Hoilett - Pack - Vaulks - Sang

Wilson - Ojo

Moore

just get as many attack-minded players on the pitch and have a crack at it.

We lose or draw or results go against us fine play the kids for the rest of the season but while there is still half a glimmer of the tiniest chance... let's go down fighting - I mean just look at the Jacks getting in last season - miracles can happen.

Mick McCarthy’s side has taken just six points from a possible 21 since the gaffer signed a new deal.

Before this torrid run, the Bluebirds had gone ten games unbeaten. This was a run that put the side in touching distance of the top six after spending much of the season in midtable.

Reading have taken just six points from a possible 18 in their last six league matches. So frustrating.

The Royals have not lost to Cardiff City at the Madejski Stadium since November 2011.

Reading they are set to welcome back John Swift for Friday night's game. He has missed the previous 14 games owing to a hamstring injury and is an important player for the Royals.

Meanwhile, Tom McIntyre is set to miss the remainder of the season with a quad injury, while defender Michael Morrison will also miss the clash.

Felipe Araruna has not played since the reverse fixture in the Welsh capital back in September and is still some way from returning following the knee injury he sustained there.

But Omar Richards is likely to feature after recovering from a foot injury.

Reading are unbeaten in 10 matches against Cardiff in all competitions (W4 D6) since losing 2-0 in the league in November 2015.

Cardiff are looking for their first away league win over Reading since November 2011, winning 2-1 under Malky Mackay.

Reading have won three of their last four at home in the league (D1), scoring eight and conceding just twice in this spell.

The last time the Royals went five league games unbeaten at the Madejski Stadium was between January and March 2019 (W3 D2).

After going unbeaten for their first 11 league games under Mick McCarthy (W7 D4), Cardiff have now only won one of their last six in the Championship (D2 L3).

Mick McCarthy has lost his last six away league matches against Reading, since leading Sunderland to a 2-0 win in March 2004.

As kick off looms, it looks like a Bluebird team that could cause Reading a few problems tonight...

In the absence of captain Sean Morrison, other players will need to step up to the plate and take some responsibility

As this deason has shown way too much, an early goal either way will set the tone...

And so it begins with a very lively start from the Bluebirds. Joe Ralls lokks to put the ball across and Harry Wilson gets a free kick that comes to nothing...
