:bluebird: :bluebird: " MICK McCARTHY WILL UPDATE CARDIFF CITY FANS " :bluebird: :bluebird:

Thursday 15th April 2021

Sean Morrison is still out injured

Lee Tomlin still not fit.

Ciaron Brown back fully fit :thumbright:

MICK McCARTHY:

Reflections from last weekend, a tough result to take?

Absolutely, disappointed. I said we played well in the first half and the manner in which we gave the goals away on 45 and 90 minutes, that’s really cutting.

That irks against anything else.

I can’t deny Blackburn played well, they hit the post three times, they deserved a point from the way they played. They still shouldn’t have got it.

It’s something we have to look at.

McCarthy

:bluescarf: :bluescarf: " READ ALL MICK McCARTHY'S UPDATES BELOW " :bluescarf: :bluescarf:

Does it leave you with a ‘what might have been’?

MICK McCARTHY:

No. We have tried our best. I’d only regret it if we haven’t done anything possible. Maybe the international break came at the wrong time in terms of our intensity.

Having players going away and others taking a breather, maybe we didn’t get back up to the same levels.

Whether it was the international break, whether it curbed what we were doing, I don’t know.

Regrets? No. I only have regrets if we haven’t done everything we possibly can.

MICK McCARTHY:

Five games to go to shape your thoughts for next season?

Of course. Some of the younger players might have an opportunity.

We have a responsibility to try and win the games and play well, but there may well be…

The play-offs are not happening. Even if we win all our games the other teams have enough about them to get something.

We have just got to win them all. If you are preparing for next season, you want to win on a high.

MICK McCARTHY:

Are there some players trying to remain part of your plans?

That’s every day and every game for me. If they aren’t doing that now then they won’t be in my plans at all.

Positive talks?

We are having conversations, that’s all. With the recruitment team and coaching staff. I’ve not gone to anyone yet asking if we can do it. That’s another discussion.

MICK McCARTHY:

Players you’ve got with you, Sean Morrison, he back?

No. Sean is injured. He is still out. The lads who have come in have done very well. But you want to look back at games like Swansea, he was outstanding.

He is a great leader of the team and we welcome him back. If and when he is fit to play.

I’ve just seen him on the treatment table, we do expect to see him again this season. He might be a doubt about Brentford.

MICK McCARTHY:

Reading still have top-six aspirations…

Yeah, they are a great side. They should be really fired up to beat us and get back in the top six.

Bournemouth, Barnsley, the ones around them have picked up points.

It’s a huge game for them to get back in that top six.

MICK McCARTHY:

How do you motivate a team now?

Season is never over! If that was the case then players wouldn’t compete in training, but that is not the case.

You are playing for pride, the jersey, the fans, the livelihoods. If that ain’t enough to motivate you there’s something wrong.

I wouldn’t be suffering too many of them gladly that’s for sure.

MICK McCARTHY:

The season has not been a failure from when you took over, agree?

On the back of one point from nine, it doesn’t feel as good.

We have 1.8 points per game, if you have 2 throughout the season you’ll get promoted. Some of it has been good.

MICK McCARTHY:

More on the season

Was it a new-manager bounce? It was a big bounce for 13 games. These last three we have just dropped off a little.

The Sheffield Wednesday game was a perfect storm for them. Blackburn, we shouldn’t be giving that away in the 90th minute.

It’s been educational, that’s for sure, in terms of the league again and the players we’ve got.

You can always take something from it. But I’m not going to say it’s been a success.

MICK McCARTHY:

Rekindled your love for Championship?

I hadn’t lost it! I hadn’t lost the desire or passion for being here.

So yes it has brought it all back, rekindled might be the word. It’s reminded me of how good a league it is. It is a fabulous league.

It’ll be even better when we get the fans back that’s for sure.

MICK McCARTHY:

Reading surprised you this season?

I’ve got their squad in front of me, no it doesn’t surprise me. They have got good players.

When the league started I moved to Cyprus, I didn’t take much notice of what they were doing.

I thought they were going to do better at one point. They’ll be hurting.

We’ll have to be fully at it, that’s for sure, to go there and get a win.

MICK McCARTHY:

Next two games, a barometer for next season for you?

Well yeah. Brentford have been great for the last few years. Their recruitment has been great.

If we could emulate that on a yearly basis, that would be fabulous.

I highlight them more than anyone else, they’ve been the most consistent team. Even when I was at Ipswich, they were buying and selling well.

If we could do that, it would be fabulous.

One of the positives, the emergence of younger players?

The training sessions, one of my first, Rubin Colwill and Isaak Davies caught my eye. Rubin’s been on the pitch.

Tom has just signed a new contract, Browny has come back in the team.

It’s a positive, certainly, we’d like to get some more through.

Cardiff have two former Reading players, Leandro Bacuna and Sean Morrison

Sean Morrison has been tremendous this term. It's been telling just how much they have missed him the last three matches, in which they have gained just one point, as he sat out with a calf strain. There is hope he can return for Friday's fixture, though, which will represent a huge boost if that is the case.

Lee Tomlin, how have conversations gone with you two?

MICK McCARTHY:

"He’s not involved in the squad tomorrow, for the game.

So, on that matter, I’m not going to discuss it. I’m going to discuss the game, not individual players."

I’ve had that discussion. When I came here he was injured, so unless it’s about the game tomorrow… I’ll do all that at another press conference.

This is about the game against Reading, not Lee Tomlin."

Jordi, is he back with the first team full time?

Jordi & Tomlin trained with us instead of playing with the under-23s because it was more beneficial to them.

We had a really good session when we trained. The two of them trained very well and it was more beneficial for them in terms of the work they would have got through.

The two Cardiff City young guns who immediately caught Mick McCarthy's eye as he hints at blooding youth

With little to play for in the final five games, the Bluebirds manager has hinted there could be a few changes to the side in the coming weeks

Cardiff City manager Mick McCarthy has hinted that some Bluebirds youngsters could get their chance to impress in the coming weeks.

With nothing left to play for, given the play-off dream is now practically, if not mathematically, over, there are some who believe now is the time for the up-and-coming kids in the academy to get their shot.

City have five games left to play this term, which represents a potentially meaningful sample size for McCarthy ahead of next season.

And, while still keeping his cards close to his chest, he offered a hint that some of City's young guns could come into the fold and get some first-team minutes under their belts before the season's end.

MICK MCCarthy:

"Some of the younger players might get an opportunity," McCarthy said.

"We have a responsibility to try and win the games and play well, but there may well be (scope to blood youngsters), because you talk about the play-offs, the play-offs are not happening, we are 12 points adrift with five games to go. That's just not happening.

"Whatever we did, if we win all the games, the other teams have enough about them to win enough points to stop that.

"We have just got to try and win them all. If you are preparing for next season, you want to finish on a high."

We have seen a number of young players come into the fold throughout the campaign, indeed our fan columnist Scott Johnson believes it is the most pleasing aspect of the season, but game-time has been few and far between for them with so much on the line.

Now, though, we could see a change of tack.

There are a clutch of youngsters who are pushing their case for more involvement, Rubin Colwill, Kieron Evans, Keenan Patten and Isaak Davies among them.

And from the very start, two of the above caught the manager's eye.

"The training sessions, one of my first training sessions, it was Rubin Colwill and Isaak Davies who caught my eye," McCarthy said. "They have both been in the squads, Rubin’s been on the pitch.

"But the other lads, Tom Sang has just signed a new contract, Browny, Ciaron Brown, who was up in Scotland, has come back and played in the team and done very well.

"I'm pleased with some of the youngsters. It’s a positive, certainly, we’d like to get some more through."

Mick on Tom Sang:

‘I know he’s a midfielder and that’s where he was training, but we were short of a replacement for Perry. I thought Tom was the ideal replacement because he’s good with the ball, has two good feet and can get up and down. It’s suited him and I see him there.’

Cardiff City: Time in charge of Bluebirds 'not a success' says Mick McCarthy

BBC

Thursday 15th April 2021

Cardiff City's only win since 2 March came against Swansea City in the South Wales derby

Cardiff City manager Mick McCarthy says his time at the club has been "educational", but not a success.

The Bluebirds were 15th in the Championship and closer to the relegation zone than the play-offs when McCarthy took charge on 22 January.

Cardiff were unbeaten in McCarthy's first 11 games in charge, but one win in six games has now seen their chances of a top-six finish all-but disappear.

MICK McCARTHY:

"Is it a success? No, but it's been educational," said McCarthy.

"You can always take something from it, we've tried our best and I'd only have regrets if we hadn't done everything possible.

"Some of the younger players may get an opportunity now, but we've got a responsibility to win the games and play well.

"The play-offs aren't happening, even if we won all the games the other teams have enough about them to stop us, but when you're preparing for next season you want to finish on a high."

Although a play-off finish is still mathematically possible, the Bluebirds are 12 points adrift of the top six with just five matches remaining.

Instead, McCarthy says his focus is now on completing the campaign in a manner which gives his side the best chance next season.

'I just wanted to do my bit'

"We can't just let the season finish, planning goes on all the time looking at players," said McCarthy.

"The season is never over, if it only mattered when you played for points the players wouldn't compete in training.

"You're always playing for something, your pride, the club, your jersey, the fans, yourself and your livelihood, if that isn't enough to motivate you then there's something wrong."

One of the notable positives under McCarthy has been the emergence of some of the club's younger talent.

Tom Sang and Ciaron Brown have been regular starters in defence in recent weeks while Rubin Colwill made his first-team debut under McCarthy.

Sang, 21, has been deputising at right wing-back instead of his more familiar midfield role with a number of defensive injuries at the club, and has signed a new contract at the club.

"It's great to have more than one string to your bow as a player," said McCarthy.

"I know he was a midfielder but we were always short of cover for Perry Ng and I looked at Tom and thought he was the ideal replacement.

"In one of my first training sessions it was Rubin Colwill and Issak Davies who caught my eye.

"And the likes of Tom and Ciaron Brown have done very very well, I'm very pleased with the youngsters and we'd like to get a few more through."

Sean Morrison injured his calf during the South Wales derby but stayed on the pitch for the full game

The Bluebirds will look to get back to winning ways on Friday evening against play-off chasing Reading.

However captain Sean Morrison remains unavailable through injury, with McCarthy confirming the defender will miss Friday's trip to the Madejski Stadium.

"Sean is still out, the lads who have come in have done very well but when I look back at his performances he's a great leader and we'd welcome him back," said McCarthy.

"He's not for Friday [vs Reading], and then we will have to look at Brentford, he could be a doubt for that as well.

"We hope to see him before the end of the season but we'll see."
