About Brentford

Brentford Football Club are a professional football club based in Brentford, Greater London, England. The team compete in the EFL Championship, the second tier of the English football league system. Nicknamed "the Bees", the club was founded in 1889 and played home matches at Griffin Park from 1904 before moving to Brentford Community Stadium in 2020. Their main rivals are fellow West London clubs Chelsea, Fulham, and Queens Park Rangers.

Brentford initially played amateur football before they entered the London League in 1896 and finished as runners-up of the Second Division and then the First Division to win election into the Southern League in 1898. They won the Southern League Second Division in 1900–01 and were elected into the Football League in 1920. Brentford won the Third Division South title in 1932–33 and the Second Division title in 1934–35. They spent five seasons in the First Division, reaching a peak of fifth in 1935–36, before three relegations left the club in the Fourth Division by 1962. Crowned Fourth Division champions in 1962–63, Brentford were relegated in 1966 and again in 1973 after gaining promotion in 1971–72. They spent 14 seasons in the Third Division after gaining promotion in 1977–78 and went on to win the Third Division title in 1991–92, though were relegated again in 1993.

Brentford were relegated into the fourth tier in 1998 and won promotion as champions in the 1998–99 campaign. They were relegated in 2007 and won promotion as champions of League Two in 2008–09 and then were promoted out of League One in 2013–14. They had unsuccessful Championship play-off campaigns in 2015 and 2020. Brentford have a poor record in finals, finishing as runners-up in three Associate Members' Cup / Football League Trophy finals (1985, 2001 and 2011) and losing four play-off finals (the 1997 Second Division final, 2002 Second Division final, 2013 League One final and 2020 Championship final).

Preview: Brentford vs. Cardiff City - prediction, team news

By Darren Plant

Brentford play host to Cardiff City on Tuesday evening knowing that only victory will do if they want to remain in the automatic promotion race.

While the Bees sit eight points adrift of second-placed Watford with a game in hand, opponents Cardiff are realistically out of contention for the Championship playoffs after four games without a win.

Match preview

With Watford losing at Luton Town and Swansea City being held by Wycombe Wanderers, Brentford had the opportunity to take full advantage when facing Millwall at the weekend.

However, Thomas Frank's side were unable to find a way through a well-organised Lions backline, restricting them to their fifth draw in six matches.

While the Bees have only lost once since February 24, claiming just four wins during that period has left the London outfit in line to feature in the playoffs.

Even though they still require Watford to lose at least two of their remaining four games, Frank will point to their meeting with the Hornets on May 1 as reason why his side will remain motivated in their search for the top two.

Nevertheless, Brentford are not yet in a position where they can ignore seventh-placed Reading, the only team capable of denying Brentford and their nearest rivals a playoff place.

Cardiff had hoped to still be in the conversation for promotion to the Premier League after initially impressing under the guidance of Mick McCarthy.

However, the Bluebirds have conceded last-minute equalisers in their last two matches, goals which have effectively eliminated the Welsh outfit from the race for the playoffs.

There are reasons for McCarthy to be optimistic about next season, but supporters have been left frustrated after their unforeseen drop off in form after a six-match winning streak.

Top goalscorer Kieffer Moore netted his first goal in eight appearances against Reading on Friday, albeit from the penalty spot.

Team News

Having an extra day of recovery may encourage McCarthy to stick with the majority of the Cardiff side which started at the Madejski Stadium.

Josh Murphy and Sheyi Ojo are both options for the visitors if McCarthy opts to introduce fresh legs in midfield and attack.

Providing that he sticks with a three-man backline, Brentford boss Frank is likely to keep changes to a minimum for this contest.

Saman Ghoddos or Emiliano Marcondes could be handed a recall in place of Tariqe Fosu-Henry, but the likes of Rico Henry and Josh Dasilva remain on the sidelines.

Sergi Canos netted a hat-trick during the reverse fixture on Boxing Day, something which may be taken into consideration by his head coach.

Brentford possible starting lineup:

Raya; Pinnock, Norgaard, Jansson; Rasmussen, Jensen, Janelt, Ghoddos, Mbeumo; Toney, Forss

Cardiff City possible starting lineup:
Smithies; Nelson, Flint, Brown; Sang, Pack, Vaulks, Ng; Murphy, Wilson; Moore

Brentford are looking to complete their first league double over Cardiff since the 1994-95 season.

Cardiff have scored in their last 18 league games against Brentford since losing 1-0 back in December 1998.

Both of Brentford’s last two home league matches have finished 0-0; the Bees last played out three straight home league goalless draws in January 1997.

Having won eight of Mick McCarthy’s first 14 league games in charge (D5 L1), Cardiff have since failed to win each of their last four (D2 L2).

Brentford’s Sergi Canós has been directly involved in five goals in three Championship starts against Cardiff City (4 goals, 1 assist).

It is a little worrying when you consider we have nothing to lose anymore this season...

Brentford not on a great run, so I wouldn't anticipate a hammering whatever team we put out...

Pack is fould near the half-way line and the big centre-halves trot up.

Moore wins the header and knocks it into Wilson's path, but he fluffs his lines with the shot.

Cardiff doing a decent job nullifying the early Brentford threats. Ciaron Brown does well with a sliding tackle to stop a ball in behind the defence.
