Huddersfield Town are hoping to fend off competition from Cardiff City in the race to land the signature of striker Jordan Rhodes, according to reports.
The Scottish international spent three years with the Terriers before departing for Blackburn Rovers in 2012, and The Sun claims the Terriers are ready to move for his signature in a bid to bring him back to the John Smith's Stadium this summer.
The 31-year old is a free agent at the end of the season, and looks all but certain to leave current club Sheffield Wednesday, who look in real danger of relegation to League One.
Cardiff, who are believed to be on the lookout for attacking reinforcements in the upcoming transfer window, tried to sign Rhodes back in the January window but were unable to agree on a deal to prise him away from south Yorkshire.
It seems he is still on the Bluebirds' radar, but given the player's record in the second tier they may face some stiff competition.
The Terriers are hoping that the player's ties to the local area will swing in their favour this summer, with the same report stating that the Championship strugglers will look to make a move for Rhodes when their survival is assured.
That time could well be approaching, with Huddersfield's win over Nottingham Forest on Saturday opening up an eight-point gap between them and the drop zone with four games remaining.
Nevertheless, Cardiff may well feel in a good position themselves, with boss Mick McCarthy hoping to assemble a squad ready to make a more convincing push for the league's top six next season.
City have already been linked with several other names, including Accrington's Dion Charles and Peterbrough forward Jonson Clarke-Harris.
There was also reported interest in Rotherham United forward Joshua Kayode, who has been on loan at Carlisle United this term, but a move for the 20-year-old now seems highly unlikely given the fact he signed a new long-term deal with the Millers this week.
The search for a new striker will likely go up a notch should City decide that Robert Glatzel no longer has a future at the club, with young duo Max Watters and Mark Harris unable to yet make their mark at first-team level.
Easing the burden of responsibility on star man Kieffer Moore will likely be a top priority for McCarthy this summer, and he has already admitted that initial discussions over recruitment have taken place.
