McCARTHY MIGHT HAVE TO SELL PLAYERS BEFORE HE CAN BRING IN

Mick McCarthy has just dropped the biggest hint yet over Cardiff City's summer transfer strategy

The Bluebirds manager has just lifted the lid on how he thinks business will be conducted when the window opens this summer

By Glen Williams

Saturday 1st May 2021

Cardiff City manager Mick McCarthy has admitted he might have to sell some of his assets in order to bolster his squad for next season, with holding on to Kieffer Moore going to be tough.

With clubs having been hit by the coronavirus pandemic, the thought of Cardiff City having expendable funds at their disposal is perhaps a little fanciful.

The team McCarthy inherited is still largely Neil Harris', save the addition of Jonny Williams and the departure of Robert Glatzel, and he will no doubt want to put his own stamp on it this summer.

There will no doubt be loans and free transfers, as the manager has alluded to previously, but he will certainly not limit himself only to those means of recruitment.

It is likely some players McCarthy wants will cost a transfer fee and the Bluebirds boss admitted he might have to sell before he buys this summer.

MICK MCARTHY:

"I think people will have to generate money through sales and then you might have money to spend," he said in his pre-Birmingham City press conference.

"But there are going to be a lot of players that are going to be available, there are lots of players coming out of contract and we're on top of that for players that are.

"There are good players coming out of contract and you've just got to get in the market and see what you can afford and who can afford them.

"But in terms of spending most clubs are going to have to generate some money and it'll be an interesting window."

McCarthy envisages that clubs will wait until later on in the window to do their businesses, because they will likely not want to pay wages during June and July when teams aren't playing.

Harry Wilson and Sheyi Ojo are expected to return to Liverpool, while Jordi Osei-Tutu will also go back to Arsenal following the end of their loan stints.

But there could well be other departures.

The manager, and Jonny Williams, has also recently admitted it will be a tough ask to keep hold of 20-goal talisman Kieffer Moore this summer, with Premier League clubs bound to come sniffing.

Will Vaulks has recently been linked with big-money moves to Norwich City and Sheffield United, with the Bluebirds said to be valuing the player at around £7m, and the likely sale of Glatzel will also drum up some funds.

It also throws into the mix that fringe players such as Lee Tomlin might potentially leave this summer.

But while McCarthy played a straight bat, there is a sense it could be a summer of sizeable change for the Welsh capital city club, with the manager admitting he is looking forward to the window opening and getting to work.

"We've got loan players that we can't do anything about, they'll all be going back to their parent clubs," McCarthy added.

"And then we'll make an announcement when it's appropriate to do it on the players who will be here and the players who won't be here.

"But certainly you can rest assured they'll all go back to their parent clubs, whether we can do anything with them again, who knows.

"I think [transfer windows] are always challenging. Whether it's clubs that have got money or haven't got money. Clubs that have got players coming out of contract, do they want to keep them, do they want to change their contracts?

"It's challenging every year. I don't see it being more difficult this year.

"It's always interesting, it's always quite exciting. It's great when you get the players you want, so I am looking forward to doing my work in it."

Mick McCarthy: Cardiff City might have to sell before buying this summer

By Mark Poyser

BBC Wales Sport

Saturday 1st May 2021

Manager Mick McCarthy says Cardiff City will have to sell players before they pay for any new signings this summer.

With finances hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, Cardiff could be restricted in what they are able to do when it comes to bringing in new recruits.

McCarthy said it will be a situation most clubs in the English Football League will be facing.

"I think people will have to generate money through sales and then you might have money to spend," he said.

McCarthy says he has already made his mind up which members of his current squad he wants to keep for next season.

But the former Republic of Ireland boss would not be drawn on whether there could be a large turnover of players.

"Last two games, everybody can do themselves some good, whoever it might be.

"Whether it's going to be here or at another club, you want to finish the season on a high and we certainly do, so I'd expect everybody to be at full pelt on Saturday."

The Bluebirds travel to Birmingham for their penultimate game of the season with injury doubts over captain Sean Morrison, striker Max Watters and defender Jordi Osei-Tutu.

It's a given we are going to sell our assets. It's the current boards operational policy.

The almost comical comment is that we will sell before we BUY. We will sell and to a large extent NOT replace, simply relying on kids who, with respect have had a tortuous season (apart from Feb) in their respective age leagues.

NH, and MM were given no tools to work with or help from the board despite hefty parachute payments. Next season will be more of the same and worse.

I've been saying this for the last few seasons and I have been called negative over it. Now we are where we are all those that called me out have gone quite.

We are now going through what I call a Reset. We don't have the parachute payments anymore so now we are being forced into looking at the academy guys. Next season will be a great test to see how good the academy is. I think we will be comfortable in the Championship but promotion atm will be a bridge too far.

If the club sell Moore I will be fuming as they should build the team around him. It will show Tan is bored of is hobbie and has no ambition to get to the Prem to establish ourselves. New owner the sooner the better IMO. :bluescarf:

I know that after this pandemic finances are tight for all clubs in the Championship
but just before pandemic i thought we where nearly "debt free" and in a better position than most in the Championship due to vincent tan paying off debt year by year and we have just had our last parachute payments
But the way fans are talking we are in a worse position than wycome wanderers surely we have' nt dropped so far in this division financially more than all the other teams
Hopefully we fans will all be able to return next season but it sounds like we will be watching a cardiff B team.

What have you been saying Ian?

About selling players? We haven’t sold anyone we didn’t want to keep. Prove me wrong.

About a reset. You say it every year. Every year it’s wrong and people say we need to reset and develop a new style of football.

Every year you say we are gonna settle for mid table etc. Then we end up competing at the top end.

Every year you say we won’t sign anyone. We ended up being one of the highest spenders in the division last season.

You haven’t been proven right at all, ever.

If Will Vaulks is worth £7 million, we could be looking at 10 times that amount for a player of Marlon Pack’s elk.

None of those sales under Tan’s stewardship.

You agreed with Barclay and thats what he said.

Not reset as such but you have said we have to start again and accept mid table and then we have made a play off run.

Wanted to sell him. Like Etheridge and soon Glatzel they felt he wasn’t needed.

Chopra, Ledley, Kav, Loovens etc etc etc.

When did I say we won't sign anyone and this is the first time I've mentioned a reset.

None of those sales under Tan’s stewardship.

You agreed with Barclay and thats what he said.

Not reset as such but you have said we have to start again and accept mid table and then we have made a play off run.

Callum Patterson.

Wanted to sell him. Like Etheridge and soon Glatzel they felt he wasn’t needed.

No we did not. I don't know anyone who wanted Patterson to go.

We had replacements for Etheridge and Glatzel but not for Patterson who could have fitted in anywhere.

When?

When have we ever sold a player we didn’t want to sell?

I keep saying it but you can’t just write shite and it becomes true.

Your right, we have never sold a player we didn't want to sell. Tan wanted to sell them all, and he would have got rid of more no doubt and filled the squad with U17s.

I say HE would have filled the squad, because it is my opinion that it is he who scouts players, signs players, picks the side etc.

And yes, it is a 'B' side full of B side quality. Tan is not interested, bored, and has no football knowledge.

But different to the examples given of Chopra/Earnie etc. We sell players now as it suits us to,

I wish Patterson hadn’t been sold.

I would change might to will. That seems about right.
If we were to sell Moore I would go for Clark Harris at Peterborough.

Clark Harris probably worth as much if not more due age.

No idea. Free up wages maybe? Reduce outgoings on those not in MM's plans.

Let's try and push for a season of hope.

i think we are thin on the ground as it is..

the only fit players un used today were Smithies and Ojo the rest of the bench was made up of under 23s...

This is a big worry of mine,,, expecting too many under 23s, under 18s, and any other so called youngsters to make up the numbers. All very well if they are good enough for the first team, but most of them have been playing from one footballing hiding to another. If a players good enough, he’s old enough, what ever their age,,,, the problem is how many youngsters on the books are currently “good enough”?
