Defending with your hands behind your back

Sun May 16, 2021 1:40 pm

The game has lost the plot. How can you defend with your hands behind you back? You need your arms for balance. Yesterday great Leicester goal should have been blocked by the defender but because he had his hands behind his back he couldn't react properly. I understand the fear of giving away a penalty because it seems the legislators and referee have no understanding of playing the game as to what should constitute handball. Be he wasn't even in the area. Madness

Don’t even think the player trying to block the shot was even in the box.

What do you constitute as being 'handball' and should it be applied across the park or separately inside and outside the area?

Should be a good debate...

Chris you very rarely if ever get handball outside box that is debatable in same way as it is in box! Only issue could be like the Leicester goal ball hit hand after his leg? In box that would surely have been chalked off under present laws but wasnt yesterday can only think it was because it was in midfield.

We seem to have lost sight of why the handball exists. It's to stop players deliberately affecting the flight of the ball by using the hand or arm.

There is a simple common sense rule to apply.

Did the hand/arm hit the ball? Handball.
Did the ball hit the arm/hand. Not handball. ( Unless the player deliberately makes himself bigger by putting out his arms )

If the ball hits the hand/arm rather than the other way around it should be treated just like any other part of the body. This how it used to be until the game lost all semblance of common sense.

All defenders defend like that now, even in games without VAR.

Plenty of defenders in the Championship defend like that.

I have no idea why anyway, because the handball rule changed early in this season after it seemed a penalty was being given whenever it hit the hand.

It's changed now so players shouldn't be defending like that, as long as their hands aren't in an unnatural position.
