Cardiff City hero Sol Bamba announces incredible news he is cancer free as he issues statement

The Bluebirds fan favourite was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma on Christmas Eve but has just been given the all clear

Thursday 20th May 2021

Cardiff City hero Sol Bamba has announced the news all fans have been waiting for – he is cancer free.

The Bluebirds fan favourite was given the devastating diagnosis of non-Hodgkin lymphoma on Christmas Eve before the club made the news public back in January.

Bamba underwent six rounds of chemotherapy and admitted to WalesOnline that, while he largely coped well, there were some real low points during the course of his treatment.

He underwent the last of his chemotherapy sessions in April and has now been given the all clear.

"Hey everyone, just a quick message to inform you that I'm now cancer free!" he said in a statement on Twitter.

"It is of course an incredibly heartwarming news for my family and I, we are over the moon right now.

"I really want to thank each and everyone that has been supporting me, whether it's been with a comment, a message, a like or whatever, that definitely gave me extra strength to go through this.

"Above all, I want to thank the family at the NHS who took such good care of me, I will always be grateful for your job.

"Thank you to all my family, my friends and of course the club and everyone one in the football industry that has helped me facing this challenge. I wish you all a blessed day and hopefully will see you soon again on the pitch. Sol."

It will, of course, come as wonderful news not only to Cardiff City fans, but there full spectrum of the footballing fraternity who threw their support behind him following his diagnosis.

The 36-year-old said that having that end goal of returning to the pitch helped him focus and steered his mind away from negative thoughts.

Indeed, having felt fit enough to ramp up his workload back in April, he returned to Cardiff City training with a view to playing in the final game of the season.

Mick McCarthy brought him on in the final few seconds in that 1-1 draw with Rotherham and, it is fair to say, it was the most joyous 10 seconds of the entire season.

The end of Bamba's statement is also telling. It is clear he wants a return to the pitch, something he has spoken about before, meaning there are no plans for him to hang up his boots just yet.

He is out of contract at Cardiff this summer and it is understood negotiations are still ongoing.
