Cardiff City set to battle Derby County, Preston and Huddersfield Town to sign Hull City star

Cardiff City are reportedly one of a number of Championship sides interested in signing Hull City defender Callum Elder.

The Bluebirds have already dipped their toe in the transfer market this summer, with striker James Collins having already agreed to sign, while left wing and attacking midfield are two other positions in which they are looking to strengthen.

However, Football Insider claim Cardiff are looking to bolster their options at the back, too, with Australian left back Elder said to have emerged as a player on Cardiff's radar.

WalesOnline understands that Cardiff will indeed look to bolster their left-back options if they fail to strike a deal with Joe Bennett, who is out of contract this summer.

The Bluebirds have only 19-year-old rookie Joel Bagan as the recognised left back within their ranks and it is an important position, given the importance Mick McCarthy places on the role of wing backs within his Cardiff team.

It is understood that Cardiff had made overtures to Adam Reach of Sheffield Wednesday, however a move did not progress beyond initial talks and the player is now destined for a move elsewhere in the upcoming window.

But it now appears the Bluebirds' eyes are veering elsewhere, with the 26-year-old Tigers defender, who is a former Australia under-20s international, now thought to be on their radar.

Elder was named in the EFL League One Team of the Year for his stellar displays while helping Hull to promotion this term and it is thought a number of second-tier clubs are interested in landing his signature.

The Leicester City academy product has one year left to run on his deal at the KCOM Stadium, so his departure would command a transfer fee.

Unlike many of the players linked with Cardiff during this window, Elder has not played for McCarthy, however he did enjoy a loan spell at Ipswich Town in 2019, after the Bluebirds boss had departed Portman Road.

Elder joined Hull in 2019 and has scored one goal and provided 14 assists in 78 appearances.
