Another player on the radar - Ryan Giles

Postby Scoularite » Thu Jun 10, 2021 6:20 pm

Cardiff are lining up a move to sign Wolves midfielder Ryan Giles, Football Insider understands.

There is interest from multiple Championship clubs in the English 21-year-old this summer.

A recruitment source told Football Insider that Cardiff are leading the chase because of Mick McCarthy and his assistant Terry Connor’s Molineux links as well as their proven track record of developing players.

McCarthy is said to be a huge admirer of the young left-sided midfielder and regards him as a rising star.

The Welsh club are keen on taking Giles on a season-long loan deal.

Giles signed a new contract with Wolves in December last year committing him to the club until 2025.

Giles – who won the Wolves Academy Player of the Year award in 2018 – spent the second half of the 2020-21 campaign on loan with Rotherham in the Championship.

His short career has taken in five loan spells in total.

He made his senior debut during a six-month stretch with AFC Telford in March 2018.

The midfielder later spent time with Shrewsbury Town in League One and Coventry City in the Championship.

For Rotherham, Giles was an ever-present and missed just one match in his time with the South Yorkshire outfit.

He has one senior appearance for his parent club to his name and that came in a 2-2 FA Cup draw against Shrewsbury in 2019.

Giles was in the youth system at Wolves during McCarthy’s six-year spell with the club between 2006 and 2012.

Looks like a prospect, but not sure if he is a midfielder or fullback with reports of his time on loan at Coventry.

Found this in the Yorkshire post: comment by Rotherham manager Paul Warne:

"He's a left wing-back. He can play left-back or left wing but I think left wing-back is his best position. He's played 40-odd games. He is quick and direct and puts crosses into the box. He is got a good footballing brain and has a bit of experience in this league having played 19 times in it this season for Coventry.

Got me, at "puts crosses in the box," as long as moore stays, he will love it!

We need a replacement for Joe Bennett so if this lad is a left back/wing back then he would seem to be a good fit.
