Cardiff City are in advanced talks to sign Crewe Alexandra midfielder Ryan Wintle, Football Insider understands.

Mick McCarthy’s side have made a breakthrough in negotiations as they work to lure the in-demand 24-year-old.

A recruitment source told Football Insider that Cardiff are close to reaching an agreement with Wintle and winning the EFL-wide race for his signature.

He is one of the most coveted players in League One after rejecting a new Crewe deal and becoming available on a free transfer.

This site first revealed on 26th May that the Welsh side were lining up a move for Wintle.

He could follow in the footsteps of former Crewe teammate Perry Ng who, as reported by Football Insider in January, signed for Cardiff after they met his £250,000 release clause.

The multi-talented Wintle is accomplished as both a defensive midfielder and centre-back and featured 48 times for Crewe in 2020-21.

He performed both roles for David Artell’s side last term as they finished 12th in League One.

Wintle has experienced one relegation and two promotions with Crewe after joining from non-league side Alsager Town in 2015.

The Railwaymen revealed when they posted their retained list on 13th May that Wintle had been offered a new deal.

However, quoted by Cheshire Live the same day, manager David Artell admitted “the door has been firmly shut” regarding the midfielder’s future at the club.

His Welsh suitors are a side resurgent under the management of Mick McCarthy.

The Bluebirds enjoyed an impressive second half of the campaign after the 62-year-old took over in January.

They ultimately finished nine points off the play-off spots in 8th place in the Championship.
