Now, attention will turn to his club future, with speculation rife amid fresh reports that Liverpool are "hesitant" to sell Wilson now and want to move the winger out on loan once again next season.

So what's the score, what are his options and who are his admirers?

Cardiff City

Cardiff City Chairman had said he wants Wilson back and with City only paying a third of Wilson’s wages last season , this now could happen.

Reports that Liverpool are unsure whether they want to cut ties with Wilson for good will come as music to Cardiff City’s ears.

One look at the Bluebirds squad and anyone can see there is a real dearth of creativity.

Mick McCarthy desperately needs to add ingenuity to this group if he is to challenge at the top end of the table and news that Wilson might be available for a loan should have the City recruitment department on red alert.

The question is, how does Wilson feel about a return to the Welsh capital?

Let's face it, Cardiff do not play the sort of football that lends itself to Wilson’s ability or style of play and he had to scrap tooth and nail for all of his seven goals and 12 assists last term.

This will be a huge loan for him, if indeed that is what transpires, because he will have one last chance to prove he has what it takes to cut it at Liverpool. Another Derby-like season next term and his stock will skyrocket.

At Cardiff, given the lack of options there currently, he will be afforded opportunities to shine. He will be the creative kingpin and McCarthy will hand him the keys to unlock defences. Game-time will be no problem, Cardiff need him more than he needs Cardiff in that sense.

But is he going to post the sort of numbers that are going to make Liverpool sit up and take notice, when Cardiff’s game plan relies so heavily on wing backs’ crosses and target-men strikers?

The reliance on set-pieces will play into Wilson’s hands, although truth be told his free-kicks were poor last season. He did reap the rewards, assists-wise, with his corner-taking, though.

Importantly, a move to Cardiff will represent familiarity for the Wales international. He has never spent more than one season at a club and it can be destabilising to hop from team to team, year after year.

Maybe some stability will do him good. He knows the squad, the coaching staff, the city, all things which shouldn’t be underestimated. He also grew as the season went on last year, which will only help him hit the ground running should he return this summer.

Wilson has stated: “I want to play in every game, I just don’t want to make up the numbers, I want to prove myself.”

In footballing terms, yes, of course there are places better suited for him, but there are a myriad factors which help a move to Cardiff make sense, too.

Wilson had two years left on his contract at Anfiield.

Didnt think we would have signed him last season so we can live in hope! Still don't think he'll be back though

Excluding Tomlin, there is zero creativity in this squad so getting wilson back would be a massive boost!
