“ Harry Wilson / Lee Tomlin ? ‘

Losing Harry Wilson and not replacing him clearly dramatically weakens this City squad. Jonny Williams' surprise exit has also lessened the options in there.

However, having Lee Tomlin back and fully fit will feel like a new signing. If Cardiff can get him anywhere near to his 2019/20 fitness and performance levels, it is hoped he can still have a big impact this season.

Rubin Colwill remains an unknown quantity, really. He showed signs of true promise last term, but as expected with any kid stepping up to the Championship, he was raw and needed to smooth out the rough edges.

Both Colwill and Tomlin are good options at this level - and let's hope the Leandro Bacuna experiment in that position is cast aside - but City need another creative spark in there somewhere.

It is understood Cardiff are looking at options in that No.10 role, with Wilson even thought to be on the radar again. A move for the Welshman always appears unlikely, though, with a number of clubs both at Championship and Premier League level expected to be keen on .

In terms of outgoings, well Cardiff let Sol Bamba, Junior Hoilett and Bennett leave this summer. All of them were on sizeable wages and it has freed up some space within the squad, which has been quickly filled by the three new arrivals.

Williams and goalkeeper Joe Day also departed, too, so there is some wiggle room within the squad.

There are two areas of the squad which could perhaps do with some streamlining, though. The striker stable, for example, is heavily stocked and needs some serious slimming down.

Max Watters seemed to be out of favour under McCarthy and it would be no surprise if he left on loan this summer.

Reports in Peterborough, however, claim Cardiff are ready to cut their losses with the striker, who joined only in January, and newly-promoted Posh are ready to table a bid.

Similarly, too, there seems to be scope for Mark Harris to go out on loan, with Crewe having been linked with a move for him. Given Collins has come in as a more senior striker, opportunities for both Harris and Watters will seemingly be reduced.

Isaac Vassell and youngster Isaak Davies are considered first-team options in pre-season, too, so it will be interesting to monitor their involvement in the games over the coming weeks.
