Cardiff City striker Isaac Vassell's absence explained as Mick McCarthy gives update on injured stars

The Cardiff striker sat out Saturday's draw with Exeter City

Vassell injured himself in training.

Cardiff City player Isaac Vassell has seemingly suffered another injury setback.

Cardiff City boss Mick McCarthy has confirmed that Isaac Vassell missed Saturday's clash with Exeter City due to a knock in training - but says he hopes the striker will be fighting fit again soon.

Vassell, who netted in the 5-0 win over Bath City earlier in the month, has been working his way back towards a first team return this summer after previously spending the best part of two years on the treatment table.

McCarthy has already warned that Vassell is some way off being able to handle 90 minutes of Championship action, but there was nevertheless growing optimism around his progress this summer.

But the striker wasn't included in the matchday squad for Saturday's 2-2 draw with Exeter City, and McCarthy has confirmed that he has suffered a setback on his road to a full recovery.

MICK McCARTHY:

"Isaac Vassell was training yesterday, and he was going to play today but unfortunately he pulled up," McCarthy said.

"He's okay. He's a bit fatigued and hasn't been playing for a while, but he's come back and trained really hard.

"They'll all be okay. They're little knocks."

“Vassell and Tomlin are still far off from being fully fit for 90 minutes, they still need to work on their fitness levels.

It remains to be seen whether Vassell will be fit for Tuesday's clash with Southampton at the Cardiff City Stadium, a game that will see the Bluebirds play in front of their own fans for the first time in more than a year.

But one man that could well be make an appearance is captain Sean Morrison, who seems to be closing in on return to full fitness.

"Sean, I think will be coming back either Tuesday or Saturday and it'll be good to have him back," McCarthy added.

Perry Ng and Curtis Nelson are also likely to be in the fold after getting minutes under the belts during Saturday's clash with the Grecians.

"They've been missing for quite a bit and you could tell that when they were on", McCarthy said when asked about the pair.

Was always going to happen after so long out, hopefully not serious.

If it is another big injury we really are short up front.

Mccarthy said it's just his fitness. He's played and trained really hard recently, which understandably means he just needs a little longer to recover to get back used to playing after so long out. He's fine.. Not injured.

Where did Malky end up?

Get rid ASAP how?
Sell him? To who and for how much?
Pay up his contract? Saves no money and gives us one less player to use when he’s back fit.

That’s the problem with allowing everybody a voice on the internet. You get stupid comments.

I know a lady who was in school with him down in Cornwall, she was saying he’s a really good bloke. I think he’s a genuine bloke, who’s worked hard to get where he is. I don’t think he’s lazy, just suffered a bit of bad luck.

I remember coming away from the Luton game buzzing about him. That little cameo showed a fair bit about him, good finish and he looked bang up for it too. Him fully fit up front with Moore and a fit Tomlin behind would be so good but I’m not hopeful about it

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, We will see who is stupid when Vassell brakes down again until the end of his contract in June.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion you are right. But get rid how? We can’t.

And if you write we will see who is stupid and then spell breaks wrong…. spellcheck is your friend.

And how many contracts does he have?

well if he does break down injured again it will almost certainly end his pro career... doubt that then qualifies him as a lazy money grabber... and we still wont be able to ...get rid until June unless we pay up his contract
